Vinnie is a very special 2.5- to 3-year-old purebred male Golden Retriever. Why is Vinnie so special, you might ask? Well, Vinnie (I've not looked up the meaning of Vinnie's name, but I have to believe it has something to do with angels) is special because he has many guardian angels looking out for him. Here is Vinnie's story so far. . . .

Tuesday, November 25th: Vinnie, who likes to chase cars, goes missing from his home in rural southern MN.

Wednesday, November 26th: Carla, a sheriff in southern MN, making her rounds on the back roads of southern MN, sees something in the ditch, probably another deer. She stops and finds a Golden Retriever with obvious rear leg/hip injuries. Carla carefully loads the unknown, injured Golden into her squad car and drives him to the nearest vet. Dr Diane confirms that this beautiful Golden has a broken leg and possibly other injuries. She does not have X-ray equipment or the resources to provide the extensive care this guy needs, so a call to our RAGOM hotline is placed. At the same time, social media is being used to locate the owner.

Vinnie when found

Within hours, we spoke to the owner of Vinnie who was not able to afford thousands in medical care and sadly surrendered him to RAGOM so we could provide necessary emergency care. An urgent transport request was sent out to our volunteers for someone to pick up Vinnie so he could move to an emergency vet in the Twin Cities metro area. Even though it was Thanksgiving eve, Jackie and Dick R quickly offered to pick up Vinnie and meet another transporter so he could move as soon as possible. Driving conditions were not the best, but that did not stop our volunteers from making sure Vinnie received the care he required. Again, within hours, Vinnie was safely transported to an emergency vet and X-rays confirmed our fears. His right rear femur was broken in several places and he would need an orthopedic surgeon to repair the leg....if the leg could be saved. Vinnie was hospitalized so he could receive IV pain meds and stabilization.

Thursday, November 27th (Thanksgiving Day): Vinnie has much to be thankful for. His team of angels has gone from Carla, Diane, Dick, Jackie, Denise, and the techs and vets at the emergency clinic to an entire village of RAGOM folks who are praying for Vinnie to recover. As his temporary foster, I visit him at the emergency vet. They reported he was doing OK, but would not eat and did not want to move. So, I brought him a plate of Thanksgiving leftovers. Vinnie is a meat-and-potatoes guy. Mashed potatoes and turkey were his favorites, and by the time I left, he had gotten up to go outside and ate a second dinner provided by the staff of the emergency vet....yes, another turkey dinner!!

Merry Christmas to Vinnie

Friday, November 28th: Vinnie is moved to the orthopedic surgeon so he can be evaluated for surgery. The surgeon feels there is a good chance his leg can be saved, but will not know until she does the actual surgery. Vinnie is stable on oral pain meds and antibiotics. Surgery is scheduled for Monday morning and Vinnie is able to come home with me for the weekend.

Saturday, November 29th: Vinnie is doing very well. He is eating boiled turkey and rice with a mix of cottage cheese or mashed potatoes. He does not want to eat kibble. Could be that I already spoiled him or that his mouth hurts from being hit by a vehicle. Vinnie is able to get himself up on his own, but I keep him confined to an x-pen for 90% of his day. He is great about taking his meds, seems fine with my dogs, and is housebroken!!! Vinnie wanted to walk a bit when outside, he did not want to pee until we walked to a tree and he tried to lift his broken leg, so he could pee!!!

Sunday, November 30th: Vinnie continues to do very well. He is stronger today, walking well with the use of a sling and is able to get on and off the love seat....by himself. He really does not want help getting up and down, so now I just stand by until he is on his feet and then put his sling on him so we can walk. He met my resident dogs without issue. I still keep them separate as I do not want my dogs to bump into him or injure him. He is eating great, giving tons of kisses, and is so happy and grateful. You can just see it in his eyes. Please continue to send positive thoughts and prayers for Vinnie. His surgery is scheduled for 12/01/2014. We will update you after that. Vinnie will also move to a permanent foster in Iowa for his recovery and rehab.

Updates

Thursday, April 2, 2015

The name Vinnie means "conqueror." For anyone who has followed his story, it is obvious how well this name fits this incredibly strong and resilient boy. We have helped him from the sick and injured dog that came to our home in early December to become a healthy and beautiful and loved dog. We endured surgery, treatments, physical therapies, medications and setbacks with him, but he always had a good attitude about it and his spirit never wavered.

Vinnie traveled to MN to again meet with the surgeon and his temp foster family fell in love with him and decided to adopt him. He will be spoiled and loved for the rest of his life by his amazing forever family.

Thank you to every single person who helped with Vinnie. He is so lucky to have so many people to love him and that wanted the best for him.

Every once in awhile I'll have a foster that has such a hold on our hearts that it makes saying goodbye, even in a good way when they get adopted, extremely difficult. Our sweet Vinnie has taken a piece of our hearts and we will always remember the months we were blessed to have him in our home and in our care. We love you, Vinnie, and will never forget you. We look forward to hearing about all of your adventures with your new family.

Great progress Vinnie - keep going!! Love, RAGOM boys Teddy and Riley and in memory of RAGOM boy Cody Great progress Vinnie - keep going!! Love, RAGOM boys Teddy and Riley and in memory of RAGOM boy Cody

Vinnie has been continuing with his physical therapies over the past month, including water and laser therapies. Once again, we want to thank the wonderful RAGOM volunteers who donated so Vinnie could get these therapies to help him heal and build up muscle.

A few weeks ago, I came home from work and Vinnie was not putting any weight on his bad leg and my vet felt some looseness in his knee. He is currently in MN being seen by the orthopedic surgeon to see if he possibly has a bone infection, a knee injury, or if it was a soft tissue injury. We will know more after his vet appointment on Friday and will report back as soon as we have some answers.

We are hoping to attend the meet-and-greet in Coon Rapids on Saturday on the way back home in IA, as long as Vinnie is cleared to come back to his foster home after the surgeon sees him on Friday.

We also want to thank Vinnie's fans for the special holiday icon!

Tuesday, February 17, 2015

Vinnie has started his water therapy and he loves it! He continues to improve every week and we are hopeful that when he gets his 12 week post-op Xr-ays on 2/24 that his leg is healed and he can meet the family that is interested in adopting him! Vinnie went to another volunteer's house last weekend while his foster family traveled to SD and he did great! He had no problem using the stairs at her house and also did fine being let out on a leash since they don't have a fenced-in yard. He proved that he has no problem being an only dog, too.

Monday, February 2, 2015

Vinnie is doing great! He is SLOWLY starting to use his leg more, especially at a very slow walk. We have continued his laser therapy and had a consult this week about water therapy. He will start that next week and then will go twice per week. We are continuing to do massages, stretching, and range of motion exercises with him too. We have also started short, slow daily walks. He loves it! He pulls on a leash, so we are using a Gentle Leader and teaching him to walk nicely. Right now we are going about 6-8 blocks total, depending on how he's doing that day.

Vinnie also has graduated from being crated during the day (on days I don't take him to work) to being baby-gated in my bedroom with Finn. He can go a full work day without any problems. He's usually pretty happy to curl up on his favorite bed in my room! He has started to show more interest in toys and would love to play fetch if I would let him! Instead, he settles for me rolling tennis balls at him while he's laying down and he grabs them as they roll up to him.

Vinnie has completed all of his vaccinations and has had a negative heartworm test and fecal. He was neutered prior to coming into RAGOM, so we don't have to worry about having that procedure done! He is currently at 73 pounds, which is a pretty good weight for him. As he gets more active, he'll lose a bit of fat and build more muscle, so it's likely he'll stay in this weight range. Otherwise, we are just working on healing his leg and getting him to build up some more muscle. We will recheck his X-rays at 12 weeks postsurgery (around 2/23) to see what the ortho surgeon thinks, and then hopefully he will be ready for adoption!

As always, we would like to thank everyone who has been so supportive of Vinnie!

Monday, January 26, 2015

With our vet's permission, we have started to venture out of our backyard so Vinnie can get a little more fresh air and change of scenery. We went to my parents' acreage and slowly walked around for a short time. Vinnie's favorite part was tasting the snow and watching the birds in the trees. Over the next few weeks, we will start to take slow, steady walks around the block to get him out and moving around a little more. He does pull a bit with a regular leash, so we will introduce the Gentle Leader.

Vinnie has started to show an interest in toys! I make fleece toys (Finntastic Fleece Toys) and Vinnie loves them! He chews them, lays in his bed and flips them back, rolls over on his back and uses his front legs to paw at it when it's in his mouth, etc! It is great to see him acting more like a 3-year-old dog! Vinnie is gated in my bedroom at night and sleeps on an orthopedic bed next to my bed. He does snore and grunt a bit during the night, but he enjoys being so close to me and usually doesn't move from his bed all night. One quirky thing about Vinnie - he likes to "smile" by showing his teeth and chomp his teeth together when he's really excited! We jokingly call him "Chomper." If you didn't know better, it would possibly seem like he was being aggressive, but he's a big softy and just gets so excited, and that's how he greets people! I've known several dogs that do this, so he's not the only one!

Vinnie has continued to get his laser therapy and will be starting his underwater treadmill therapy on Thursday, 1/29. He is using his leg a bit more now, and the scar tissue has broken down so his incisions don't stick out as much. He has a few scars that likely won't ever grow hair back, but by the time his coat grows back, they will be hidden from view. We are so excited for him to start the underwater therapy and start to use his leg more.

Vinnie's special visitors decided to postpone their visit this weekend until we know more about his prognosis with his leg. They have 2 kids and didn't want them to get too attached just yet, in case it is determined that Vinnie needs something that they couldn't provide (like a home without stairs, etc). Having a 10-year-old daughter myself, I totally understand! We hope he continues to improve so they can come meet him soon!

Monday, January 19, 2015

As you can see, Vinnie loves his therapy laser treatments! He gets to go to work with me every day (I work at a vet clinic) and gets his laser therapy while we are there. He loves the car ride and getting to see all of my coworkers! He has never met anyone that he hasn't loved at first sight. Vinnie wants to send a huge thank you to the amazing RAGOM volunteer that paid for his laser therapy! We are so thankful for your generosity! As soon as his incision is healed, we will be starting underwater treadmill therapy to help him to gain muscle mass in his broken leg. This therapy was also paid for by several RAGOM volunteers. We cannot express how much it means to us (and Vinnie!) that money was able to be raised for him to get these extra therapies to help him use his leg more!

Vinnie has made himself at home here with our family! He loves our kitties and curling up with his foster brother, Finn. As much as we love him, we know he will settle in quickly with his forever family, too! Vinnie has a family coming to meet him this next weekend! We have been talking with them and sending pictures, and I know that they are very excited to meet him! He will not be able to be adopted until he's medically cleared, but keep your fingers crossed that it is a good match for our wonderful boy!

Vinnie had recheck X-rays taken on 1/16 and they have been sent to his surgeon to see what her thoughts are on the amount of healing in his leg. He is starting to use his leg a little more, but not as much as we would want to see, considering he's 7 weeks out from the initial repair surgery. We will report back once we hear back from the surgeon. It is likely that we will want to give him more time before we decide where to go from here, as it was a pretty severe fracture.

Please continue to keep Vinnie in your thoughts! He has been through a lot and is still such a happy, loving boy!

Wednesday, January 7, 2015

Vinnie has tolerated wearing a coat, which helps to keep his shaved areas warm! He is still on strict exercise restriction, so we aren't outside for very long now that it has gotten colder! He is all smiles and loves attention. He has started to have a little more energy and spunk, and can get mouthy at times, but he is just playing and is not mean or aggressive at all. He loves to give kisses and can be vocal (a cute little whine) to get what he wants, which is usually more attention! With a great boy like Vinnie, we don't mind giving in and loving him up as much as he wants! At the vet today, Vinnie weighed in at 74 pounds. The weight loss is likely due to the amount of muscle that he has lost.

Please continue to keep Vinnie in your thoughts! He's been through a lot and still has a long way to go, but we are dedicated to making sure he has the best possible recovery.

Thursday, January 1, 2015

Mr. Vinnie has some great news to share! The wonderful Dr. R performed surgery on him last Friday, and was able to save his leg! As initially expected, his sciatic nerve was embedded in scar tissue and had become caught up on one of the pins that was put in to stabilize his broken leg. Dr. R removed the pin and freed up the nerve from the scar tissue. The good news is that the nerve was intact and only had minor discoloration, so we are very hopeful that he will not have further complications with nerve damage down the road.

A wonderful volunteer, Nikki, offered to help bring Vinnie part of the way home so FM (foster mom) didn't have to drive so far in the snow to get him. Thanks, Nikki! Vinnie rewarded her with lots of kisses during the drive. Immediately when FM saw Vinnie, she saw how much the surgery had helped! He was wanting to put weight on his leg and he even lifted it a bit to pee. It was obvious that he was feeling much more comfortable! Vinnie was excited to see that foster brother, Finn, came along and they snuggled up in the car for the whole ride home to IA.

Vinnie is feeling much better and we are having to restrict his activity for 5 more weeks. Most of the time, he is happy to hang out in the puppy pen, though he does give us those sad puppy dog eyes a lot! The repair is a bit weaker now that one of the pins was removed, but Dr. R is confident that there is enough healing and stability from the plate and screws that his bone will heal just fine. We will recheck his X-rays at the end of January to make sure that everything is healed properly, and then he will hopefully be able to run and play after that!

Once again we would like to thank everyone who has been involved in helping Vinnie to get the care that he needs! We also want to thank those who have donated towards his medical care! Vinnie is lucky to have so many people who love him!

Friday, December 26, 2014

Vinnie had a wonderful Christmas with his foster family! Santa even brought him an elk antler, which he loved! He spent some time chewing on it, and then he curled up on a blanket with foster sister, Cadence, and watched a movie and napped. He certainly loved being spoiled!

We received news back from Vinnie's orthopedic surgeon and it's not the news we wanted to hear. She is worried about nerve damage and his lack of improvement/lack of use of his leg and she wanted to have Vinnie come back for surgery asap to remove one of the pins in his leg and see if that was pinching his sciatic nerve. Vinnie made his way to Minnesota on Christmas day (THANKS, MELISSA!) and will stayed overnight at another volunteer's house (THANKS, JEAN!) before going in for surgery on Friday. We won't know until surgery is over if the vet will be able to save his leg or not. Please keep this sweet boy in your thoughts!! We will update as soon as we know more!

Wednesday, December 24, 2014

As you can see, Vinnie is enjoying life as a spoiled guest in our home! He gets along fabulously with Finn and our two cats. Even my female cat that rarely tolerates the dogs has come up to him and rubbed up against him! Vinnie has quickly learned about the finer things in life, like comfy dog beds, yummy dog treats, curling up in front of the space heater, and begging me to give him a boost up on the couch so he can snuggle with me. He loves attention and he is just the sweetest boy! Now that he's feeling better, he's been very easy to take care of and doesn't give us too much trouble with his physical therapy. He is a little over 3 weeks out from surgery and his incision is healed nicely. He still isn't using his leg very much, so we will be discussing that further with the vet who did his surgery to see what her thoughts are. We would expect him to be trying to put some weight on it within 14 days of surgery, and he is not attempting to do that yet. The good news is that we have his pain managed now. His personality is really starting to shine now that he's feeling better! He is quick to give kisses and ask for attention by flashing those big puppy dog eyes of his! I can say that they absolutely work on me every time!

We would like to wish all of our friends and RAGOM family a Happy Holiday season! We are honored to have helped so many deserving dogs this year. Vinnie has some presents under the tree that I know he will be excited to open on Christmas morning!

Friday, December 19, 2014

Vinnie has had a much better week! We have his pain managed very well and he's starting to be more alert and comfortable. He has settled into a routine and does great! He is just the sweetest boy! He still has a long road to recovery, but things are looking up for him. His wound near his eye has healed and even has hair growing back on it. His hair on his leg is also starting to grow in. You may notice that his tail is now shaved. His tail was matted pretty badly and then he had diarrhea for a few days, and it was getting too difficult to keep him clean. I definitely didn't want to do it, but it has made everything a lot easier for both Vinnie and myself. It will grow back and he will once again have a full, beautiful tail!

This week we also said goodbye to our other foster, Carver 14-400. I had to get a picture of all three boys before he left! Vinnie is the cute boy on the right in the picture!

Vinnie is completely housebroken and has not been destructive to blankets or toys. He has also proven that he can live with cats, and even lets one of my cats groom him! He also does great with kids and other dogs. We were also surprised to learn this week that Vinnie knows several commands! He knows sit, down, shake, and even speak! He is one smart dog! We have been working on sit to stand and repeat, exercises/physical therapy that will help to strengthen his muscles. Although he does it willingly for a treat, he does like to give me some back talk during our sessions! Luckily, he is very food motivated, so he will do almost anything for a treat. Vinnie is doing very well with his exercise restrictions and doesn't mind resting in a crate. We spend a lot of time just hanging out on the floor with him so he can have a little freedom and he loves the attention.

We want to send out a THANK YOU to Jake and Bailey for the hoilday icon! Vinnie is so lucky to have so many friends!

Have you fallen in love with this sweet boy as much as we have? Contact your placement advisor today to learn more about him and we can further discuss if your family would be a good match for Vinnie.

Saturday, December 13, 2014

Hello, Vinnie fans! Vinnie has been settling in to his new foster home in Iowa. Unfortunately, he's had a tough week, but we have been doing whatever we can to make him more comfortable. I think we finally have his pain managed, as long as he gets his pain meds every 6-7 hours. This will get better as his leg heals and other bruises/bumps/swelling go away from being hit. The bruising is still pretty severe around his hock area and on his abdomen, but it seems to get better every day. Vinnie allows me to put an ice pack on his leg twice daily and enjoys some extra attention from me while we do his PT. We are starting to see more tail wags and he is always willing to give kisses! Vinnie will continue to improve every week and we are committed to doing whatever it takes to get him healed and ready for his forever family!

You may notice that Vinnie now has a box at the top of his page with some things that he would need in his forever home. At this point, due to his history of running off and chasing cars, we are looking for a forever home with a physical fence. Vinnie has gotten along great with my resident dog, Finn, and tolerates our very playful foster, Carver 14-400. He has warned Carver to back up a few times, but that is likely due to the fact that his body is bruised and painful. Carver reads his signals very well and they have remained good buddies! Vinnie has not shown any interest in our two cats, even when they come up to sniff him. These things may change as he gets more comfortable and further in his recovery, but we will update them as needed!

Vinnie and his foster family want to send out a THANK YOU to Katherine Davis, his new sponsor! Words cannot express how incredibly grateful we are! Vinnie is such a special boy, and we are glad that you see that, too!

We also want to say THANK YOU to Andy 07-496, Tegan 08-060, and Brooklyn 13-214 for the holiday icons!

Vinnie's legion of guardian angels continues to grow. Thanks to the fantastic Dr R. and the staff at Inver Grove Heights Animal Hospital, Vinnie was able to keep his leg!!! He is recovering from his surgery at my house and is as comfortable as can be expected given all he has been thorough. In addition to the broken bones, Vinnie had a lot of bruising and soft tissue injury, which will take time to heal. Tomorrow, Vinne will move to his permanent foster home for at least 8 weeks of recovery and rehab. Thank you all for following Vinnie's journey and for your continued support so we can help deserving dogs like Vinnie.
