9/17/11 - I picked up Ziggy a week ago now from FM Bobbi Jo and FD [sorry, I don't remember names real well] in far northern MN...She seemed nice but not very energetic or affectionate. The previous owners didn't want her or love her. She was on a steroid and benadryl for a supposed allergy. She had very sad droopy eyes. I had been in contact with FM for the previous week so I was aware of all things known about this very sweet good dog.
I had a previous Golden for 11 years until the very sad day last October when tumors got the best of her. I immediately fell in love with Ziggy at first sight. I had a very nice long visit with FM & FD. Ziggy was very lucky to get to spend time with these loving caring people.
The long [3 1/2 hr] drive home went great. Ziggy loves to ride in cars or trucks. She would wake up and look around when we would go through towns. She slept the rest of the time.
When we got home Ziggy and resident house cat had a confrontation. No one was hurt. House kitty had been Queen of the castle for almost a year and is less than a year and a half old. I also have outside cats. They were cautious about Ziggy but not real scared.
Ziggy checked out every square inch of the house. I really do believe she knew this was going to be her new home for life. That night we went for a 1 mile walk. Ziggy tugs the lead some, but really did very well. The first night Ziggy was very uneasy. She moved around a lot.
9/18/11 - Ziggy drinks tons of water, so very first thing is to go outside. Back in to have some breakfast and a banana with pills [Yes, Ziggy loves bananas, carrots and apples]. Later, Ziggy and house kitty had another spat. Again, no one was hurt. Ziggy did get scolded this time. She hasn't shown any aggression to the queen of the castle since. The outside cats are getting more used to Ziggy. No big tails or arched backs. Ziggy took me for a mile and a half walk that evening.
Ziggy slept much better the second night. Only moved a couple times.
9/19/11 - Monday morning. I'm met when the alarm goes off by a snout on the bed next to me. Ziggy came to say "Good Morning". I rubbed her snout and chin for her. She really likes that...
Outside for business and back in for breakfast then off to work. House kitty goes outside while I'm gone. Not really sure they are OK with each other at this point.
When I got home from work Ziggy was happy to see me. She is starting to warm up to me. I let house kitty in and she looks for Ziggy to see what's up!!! House kitty keeps her distance {a foot] but really does want to be friends. Later that evening Ziggy takes me for another mile and a half walk. These walks are really good for both of us. We both could stand to lose 20 or more lbs.
In the next few days Ziggy really starts to settle in. She and house kitty can be left alone in the house together. Ziggy starts upping the distance of the walks. Ziggy goes outside without the leash now. She is quickly becoming friends with all the outside kittys and absolutely loves the 2 baby kittens. Ziggy is extra careful around the babies to not hurt them.
Now in a weeks time she has become the absolutely perfect dog for me. It's like she has been here for years. The walks are up to 3 miles now!!!! LOL I think she is trying to kill me. We should both be getting rid of the extra pounds soon at this rate.
I have to give a HUGE Thank You to all the great people involved with RAGOM. These people work their butts off to help these unfortunate dogs have a much better life. I hope to join with them in the near future.
Thank you all again including all the sponsors, supporters, and vets involved.
More updates to come and here's a few pics of Ziggy in her new home.
