Bobby Bones has found his furever home! This happy hound is glad RAGOM helped him find this Golden Life.

Bobby would like to extend a huge thank-you to the many, many people who have been there to help him find his way. There has been so much support for him within RAGOM which truly made a huge difference to him and all the people who love him.

Recently, we were walking at Long Lake Park. We were paying more attention to an approaching person with a dog and devising our walking plan and not really looking Bobby.

Suddenly, we heard this strange noise, and this thing was falling from the sky. Bobby had apparently found and caught a gopher, which he flung into the air when he was either scratched or bitten by it.

The gopher landed at his feet, a bit startled and confused himself, but still alive. Bobby wanted to know why he couldn’t keep playing chase, but we thought it best to quickly leave the scene!

Prey drive in action... Sometimes a hound just has to be a hound. After all, there are critters to get!

This spring, we have taken Bobby on several road trips. He is learning to travel well in the car. He lets us know, in his loud hound dog way, when it is time to stop for a potty break.

He has stayed in different lodging with us and settles nicely. As you can see, he seems to enjoy having a few of his favorites with him.

Bobby has been making the best of the April snow. Here is a short video of him doing zoomies through the fresh snow. He also is very good at finding where critters hunker down.

I stopped and stared at this basket the other day. It caught me off guard with how full of toys it was. When we first started fostering for Bobby, he didn’t know what toys were for. Now, any time he comes up the stairs or comes in from outside, he grabs a toy and playfully runs to the living room with it. This game involves Bobby filling the living room floor with toys and Foster Dad picking them up and putting them back in the basket, frequently! Bobby likes to have us toss his toys up for him to catch, too. His two favorites are the bunnies in the front of the basket.

There was one day that wasn’t soooo cold that Bobby had to have a bath to help with his itching and scratching. This picture shows how his normally-smooth coat fluffed out. We joke that his tail is the only thing that looks like a Golden Retriever wannabe.

This winter has been very cold with many days staying below zero. This is hard for dogs, too. With it being too cold to do our usual walks with Bobby, we have been doing other things to tire him out. We are playing indoor games, working on training, going on car rides, chewing on bones, and visiting Grandma's house. Bobby is getting very good at going potty outside very quickly. He prefers his winter coat that he steps into. He still doesn’t like things over his head, so his newer coat isn’t his favorite. We can get that winter coat on, but it works better with a treat and encouragement. Once we get the coat on, he’s happy to go out for a short walk. In this picture, Foster Dad thought this would be a good way to warm up the hound dog.

Bobby has been busy lately. We travelled to Wisconson for Thanksgiving. Bobby’s time spent in the hotel with us was easier this time. He seemed more at ease with little barking at noises, which was nice. Bobby stays in his crate in the car when we can’t be with him, and that seems to be working well, too. It is nice having the cooler weather to accommodate that.

Bobby had a nice couple interested in him. They came to meet him, and the meeting went very well. As it turned out, they were not up for his training/management needs, so they opted for another deserving dog.

We made crate/dogs bed pads for thank-you gifts for our Team Bobster members. As you can see, Bobby has tested and approved them!

Bobby Bones is celebrating his birthday month. He will be 3 years old on Halloween. We have been teaching him new tricks, which means more treats! His latest trick is “Middle,” where he comes to stand between our legs. For a dog who came to us nervous about anything passing near his head, this shows how far he has come! We have also added a couple of volunteers to Team Bobster. That is the group of people who help us keep Bobby as a foster by coming over to let him out on our long work days. He is enjoying showing off to his extended fan club. We have also been collecting wood ticks by going for lots of walks in different parks. When you have a rusty-colored dog, fall is a great time for taking pictures.

Bobby Bones thinks the sun on his face, the wind in his nose, and all the donations that came in his name are wonderful things! Thank you to everyone who is thinking of us and made contributions.

I have recently taken the time to dig around, trying to get original information on Bobby Bones. It was fun to find a little more information.  We were able to find out he was born on a farm in Elbow Lake, MN. He was turned in to rescue with his mom who is a Springer Spaniel, so she went to a different rescue. This is a picture of his mom. Bobby must take after his father! I was told that the mother dog was not a good mother, but I do not have the details on that statement.

He was transported to a short-term foster, where he was vetted and neutered. He was then transported to Iowa to stay with his permanent foster for about 3 months until he was adopted. He did a 1-week stay with another volunteer while his fosters went on vacation and did very well there. Bobby Bones lived in his adopted home in a south metro suburb for about 3 months before being returned to RAGOM where he stayed in boarding for almost 3 months until we started caring for him. Here are a few pictures of his transports:

I think he looks scared in this picture.
It looks like he came in with a sore by his eye and near his nose.

Here are some pictures of his prior foster life. I think it looks like he settled in well!

This is still a classic Bobby Bones look.
His first foster mom bought Bobby Bobes this toy.
The toy managed to travel with him, and we still have it, although it looks a bit loved and in need of some repairs, and it had an additional braid. (See the fuzzy tail wagging - that is a classic look for Bobby Bones, too.)

We did so well camping last summer, we decided to go again. I think Bobby must remember going camping because he did so well this time. We camped at a walk-in site, so we were away from the more crowded main campground, but he did just fine when we walked there to use the shower facilities. We enjoyed hikes, hanging out in the picnic area and our campsite, and of course looking for critters. We have been trying to "manage" his prey drive, which is getting notably better. However, we did note that his prey drive is still significant enough that he would rather watch for critters than eat his food. He slept wonderfully at night. For August, it was a bit chilly. In the middle of the night, Bobby was a bit chilly and I welcomed him under my covers and we snuggled and slept together. He is an awesome, loving dog. We will have to do this camping thing again soon. We all had a fun weekend.

Bobby LOVES bacon Sundays! He sure wishes it was 1 pound for 1 hound!

Bobby had his appointment at the vet for his annual checkup on August 3rd. The Rum River Veterinary Clinic and Dr. A. are very good with Bobby. I am happy to report we had a successful vet visit! How does a reactive dog have a successful vet visit? Lots of communication, patience, preparation, and respect. When I made the appointment, I let them know what we needed. Before we left to go to the vet, I gave Bobby a Clonidine tablet, which helps with situational anxiety.

When we arrived for the appointment, I left Bobby in the car whiIe I checked him in and verified that arrangement. Bobby isn't dog-friendly, so I waited in the car with him until they came to get us at a time when there were no other dogs in the waiting area and we could go right into an exam room. Bobby needs time to adjust to new things, so we waited for a while in the exam room while checking out the surroundings and listening to new noises. The vet tech knocked before entering so I could have Bobby in a sit/stay, and she was good about not approaching us which gives Bobby time to observe us conversing, therefore not elevating his reactivity.

She prepared what needed to be ready for Dr. A. and left the room. It is nice to have everything ready, so when Doctor Angle came in, she doesn't have anything in her hands. (Objects in hands are a trigger for Bobby, which reinforces the being-tazed-as-a-puppy theory). When Dr. A. came in, she took her time conversing with us so Bobby can again observe and get comfortable. We discussed what needed to get done and the best way of getting it done beforehand so the exam could be efficient and quick. Bobby relaxed fairly quickly, and we did his exam with a muzzle on. (Safety first!). Bobby had blood drawn, ears and teeth checked, heart and lungs listened to, and his body felt. He weighed in at 56.4 pounds, which is a good weight for him. (He was down to 43 pounds when we first got him.)

Bobby is back on Apoquel for his seasonal allergies, along with a special shampoo to use as needed. He seems to be allergic to something in the grass during late summer to frost, which makes his paws, ears, and nose get red and itchy. Otherwise, he is very healthy and doing well. Dr. A. complimented me, saying we should be very proud about of what we are doing for Bobby. She stated she sees a lot of dogs with issues, and we are doing an exceptional job with him. She is impressed with his progress, and he is maturing nicely. I didn't get a picture while at the vet, as I was concentrating on Bobby, but you know what he looks like!

Bobby is taking a break after a nice walk, a refreshing bath, and a round of zoomies!!! (It must have felt good.)

The Oath of a Hound

I promise to smell the ground and the trees at every opportunity.

I promise to run like the wind, even when I am tired.

I promise to give you adventure.

I promise to make you laugh at least 7 times a day.

I promise to always listen... (to my nose.)

I promise to listen to you... (when you have food.)

I promise that I will be your best friend.

I promise that you will never meet a more sensitive being. I will know when you are sick, or sad, or angry.

I promise to let you pet and love and snuggle with me, and I with you.

And I promise to try and make you feel better.

I promise to have the best singing voice in your neighborhood.

I promise that even when you think I'm being stubborn, I'm just doing things in my own language. And once you learn my language, we will talk without words or sentences.

I promise that the one thing I want more than anything, is your love and approval.

I promise that even if people have been mean to me, or if I've never been petted before, deep down in my heart I forgive. I just need some time to forget.

I promise to tear the stuffing out of every toy you give me.

I promise you a better life, in brighter colors, than you'd have had without me.

I promise to show you that life is better when you have a hound!

A typical day for Bobby when we work:

We get up at 5:00 am and take him out in the backyard for a quick potty stop.

We then leash-walk for about 25 minutes for exercise, sniffing, and a bit more "business."

When we return, he is fed 1 cup of kibble with some canned food on top that hides his Fluoxetine.

He hangs out in his favorite chair or looks out the window while we get ready for work.

At 6:30, he gets another leashed outing in the backyard to sniff out critters and potty 1 more time.

Then, he flies downstairs and kennels himself while his laundry room space is prepared with relaxing music, hiding treats, and leaving a tippy king with kibble.

He mostly sleeps, occasionally gets up to stretch, and waits for someone from team Bobster to come over and let him out or walk him sometime midday.

Then he sleeps and waits for us to get home around 6:00pm.

More romping time in the backyard on his 50-foot leash, followed by dinner for all of us.

Bobby gets another walk for about 1/2 hour and does whatever we do until it's time to get ready for bed.

Bobby gets another 1 cup of food (3 cups total per day) and gets his teeth brushed nightly.

At 9:15, he goes potty outside 1 more time, followed by belly rubs on the bed, then when lights turn off, he sleeps in 1 of his 2 dog beds in our room. He sleeps well through the night.

We were recently asked to list 5 things that we as foster parents would wish for Bobby. This is our wish list:

1: A simple home without much chaos or change with people coming and going. (To manage his fear-based reactivity, Bobby needs TIME to trust and know a change will be OK. He does best in a calm, predictable environment where change can happen 1 thing at a time.)

2: To live with someone who likes to work with training. (Not because Bobby needs training, as he is nicely trained, but because it keeps him deferring to you, which then helps manage his OCD behavior. He doesn't want to be in charge; he desires looking to you for direction, which makes for better decision making.)

3: I would love to see a secure, 6-foot, wood privacy fence so he could be off-leash to run sometimes. (I think his prey drive will still need to be managed in a fenced area until we know he won't find a way to get to the stinkin' rabbits, but it may help that he couldn't see to the other side. I do not think a fence is a requirement, as he has not been off-leash since winter and he seems to have adjusted just fine to walks and time on his 50-foot leash, but his skin under his armpits gets rubbed and same with hair on his chest from having to wear his Easy Walk harness.)

4: He wants to be a one and only pet. (I think with patience, the right dog, and proper, slow introduction, Bobby might be able to live with a dog, but I am not sure if that is fair to the other dog or worth the risk.)

5: To live with someone who will respect Bobby's fears, respond with calm concern and give positive direction, keep him a full leash's length away from anyone and any animal to prevent the liability, and love him anyhow, while accepting the love Bobby has to give in return.

Bobby joined us for a long weekend getaway to Minnesota's North Shore. He loved it, and he was so good. He traveled well: he whines a little in the car when he has to go potty, and after he goes, he settles right in for a nap. We left him for short bits in the car occaisionally, and again, he just settles in. He liked going for walks to smell new things. We are trying to train Bobby to sit at the sight of prey to help manage his prey drive. While on leash, it works great. We tell him to sit, then as long as he doesn't whine, bark, or lunge, he can keep watching. If he can't keep it controlled, we either use the "leave it" command or block his view. He is now starting to sit on his own! (Which makes for a proud foster mom!) If you are interested in Bobby, please know that we are very willing to show you all the tricks that have helped this happy hound dog and we are willing to help in any way needed.

We had the pleasure and excitement of getting Bobby listed as a featured dog on The Adoption Show of Dog TV! Enjoy viewing the attached video of Bobz! He is at 1:53.

Saturday, June 10, 2017

Bobby is fond of swimming and having a little rest in the pool after hunting for critters.

Monday, May 15, 2017

Bobz is often doing an examplary "watch me" during his photo ops, and hence the inordinately serious look, so we thought you might enjoy seeing him smile in this video. Two things to observe as you watch our handsome model:

  1. See how his pearly whites sparkle? He is so good about getting them brushed every night!
  2. Our videographer here is the Bobster's new BFF, proving that this boy can learn to trust and love strangers, even men! You would be hard-pressed to find a more affectionate dog when he opens his heart to you.

If you think Bobz would be a good fit in your home, please submit an "Inquiry for Application" form. If you have already filled out an "Inquiry for Application" form, please send an email to applicationatragom [dot] org with the dog's name, RAGOM number, the name you submitted the Inquiry for Application form under, and a sentence or two why you feel you'd be a good match.

Say hello to Bobby Bones! This handsome pup is 2+ years old (DOB: 10/31/2014), weighs 55 pounds, and is believed to be a Redbone Coonhound/Springer Spaniel mix. Bobby was born on a farm, where he had too much fun running after the neighbor’s cows. While we aren’t privy to all the details of his early life, we suspect that he was traumatized in some fashion during his formative months, leading to his fear of new people and reactivity to other dogs. But having responded well to training in RAGOM’s care, he was adopted out in 2015.

Puppy Bobby Bones in 2015

Bobby lived peacefully with children in his adoptive home and received training from professionals. However, life with young kids presented a smart, curious, energetic puppy with disastrous opportunities of slipping out of his home. In one such instance, anxious and unsupervised in an open world of strangers, Bobby followed his hunting instinct and bit a small, unleashed dog, who required stitches after the encounter. His adoptive family was sad to let him go, but it was decided that he would do best in a child-free environment.

Following his return in 2016, Bobby was thoroughly evaluated by RAGOM’s Behavioral Services team, who concluded that he was “very capable of behavioral recovery and in-home management”, and hence he was placed in foster care. An incredible team of volunteers have worked tirelessly with him to address his fear issues and teach him appropriate behaviors, and now, after ten fruitful months, we are proud to share that Bobby Bones has achieved a 98% wonderful rating!

Bobby Bones is all grown up and such a good boy!

Bobby looks to his humans for direction and responds very well to that direction. He is eager to please and treat-motivated. To help you understand how awesome this pup really is, here are a few of his attributes that we just adore:

He has mastered an impressively long list of commands. Some of the basic ones are: sit, wait, stay, come, watch me, shake, down, off, leave it, quiet. He also comes to a whistle.

Foster Mom took the opportunity to snap a photo of handsome Bobby while we were practicing “watch me” and “stay” as part of his behavioral training. Don’t worry, in just a short time, he got a treat and was running around the backyard looking for critters.

He will make friends with new people given proper introductions as well as time to acclimate to their presence. Once he accepts you, he is nothing but sweet and loving!
He absolutely loves being out in the yard, running and exploring to his heart’s content, and the exercise serves as a marvelous outlet for his nervous energy. As the saying goes, a tired dog is a good dog.

See how happy he is when he is running freely!

He is the best yard patrol you will ever find, happily keeping your flower beds and vegetable patches critter-free. Just look at this amazing bounty we got last summer, all thanks to Bobby’s keen vigilance.

Of course, he has no interest in eating any of the vegetables. He definitely would prefer meat!

He knows to chill in the house, but will also gladly catch stuffed animals or balls if they are tossed up.
He is completely housebroken, doesn’t counter-surf, can have roam of the house, and only plays with his own things.

Bobz and his birthday presents

He is kennel trained, although when we are gone, he stays nicely in our laundry room and respects the gate that blocks the doorway.
He is a good travel buddy in the car. He likes his car rides!

Notice the fuzzy thing? That is his happy hound dog tail!

He is also a good camping and hiking buddy, as long as you plan your trips well (choose less-used trails) and have treats ready to engage him during encounters with other people and dogs.

He is a super-affectionate love bug. He loves to be petted and get belly rubs.

He tolerates nightly brushing of his teeth.

When your foster mom is a dental hygienist and you are a good boy…

Finally, to illustrate Bobby’s daily life as well as many useful tips for his continued training to manage his reactive behavior, we have compiled a comprehensive guide. You will note that this fine lad has come a long, long way from his cow-chasing days!

Bobby Bones has settled into home life well and grown up to be a sweet, affectionate, wonderful hound dog that thrives on direction and the desire to please you. If you love a dog who likes to be around you and give lots of kisses, Bobby may be the companion you have been looking for.
