This is my final update for Miss Penny!

When Penny came to me as my foster dog a little over a year ago, neither of us knew that this would be her last stop. Over the months, we went through a lot together, but everything that happened made Penny trust that I would always be there for her. Slowly, Penny started to understand that she would never be alone again. I was able to take her off her anxiety medicine, and eventually, when we left her alone at home and returned, we noticed that nothing was out of place in the house. This meant she hadn't been pacing or jumping on the table to stare out the window, and she knew we would come back to her. After a while, it was hard to remember a time Penny wasn't a part of our family. Penny had already found her forever home from the first day she set her paws in our house; it just took us a while to realize it! Penny will stay with us forever and be loved every day of her life!

I introduced Penny to my mom’s Basset Hounds, and they hit it off right away! I’ve never seen Penny play so much! She had a really good time. On the days where the weather is nice, we go on longer walks which Penny really enjoys. She also enjoys just being outside, and she has a tree that she likes to lay next to. I took her down to the walking trails by the river, and she wasn’t too sure about the water. She seemed to be studying those waves pretty hard to figure out what they were doing! Penny has a lot of curiosity, and I am always going on the Internet to find enrichment ideas to keep her occupied. Her favorite game is tug-of-war, and I can usually get her interested in playing that at any time! Penny doesn’t have a gender preference when it comes to humans or dogs. She does have a preference for being around smaller dogs, though. She gets a long great with our resident Teacup Yorkie and my mom’s Bassets, and she made a friend with the neighbor’s Beagle mix down the street. Whenever we walk by the Beagle's house, Penny whines and looks around for her friend. I can tell she is disappointed when we don’t see him. Penny is having fun and enjoying life!

Penny is still doing great! Now that the weather is warmer, we've been going on longer walks which she just loves! She enjoys sniffing and exploring. Penny loves treats and will gobble one up when I give it to her, so I've been putting her treats in a Kong. She likes the challenge of trying to get the treat out, and it also stops her from eating so fast.

Another of Penny’s favorite activities is going on car rides. She knows when we are getting ready to go somewhere, and she will go to the top of the stairs to wait for us. If we tell her she can come with, she races down the stairs and out the door! Of course, nothing tops just sitting and cuddling. When I sit on the floor to play PS4, Penny comes right over and curls up on my lap. She doesn’t let her size get in the way of being a lapdog! I have also noticed that Penny seems more comfortable with smaller-size dogs and dogs that are low-key.

Penny has started smiling! As you can see in one of her pictures, Penny has a big, beautiful grin on her pretty face. She just started doing this a couple of weeks ago. She is just so happy to be loved! Penny's anxiety has gotten better now that she has a predictable schedule. We have noticed she will grab something off of the counter if she thinks it will be tasty, and if the aforementioned treat is in a container of any type, that will get eaten as well. Penny has an incredibly long reach, so even when we think we have moved something far enough back that she can't get to it, we will come home and find only crumbs left! We have started just putting everything inside a cupboard or on top of the fridge. I suspect that she has Go-Go-Gadget Paws, although this hasn't been confirmed yet.

Penny loves playing tug-of-war. If I get the toy away from her and throw it, she will run to it and jump on top of it, then pick it up and run to her bed and start chewing on it. She mostly likes to play inside the house. I've tried to get her interested in chasing a ball or playing tug-of-war outside, but she is more interested in sniffing and exploring. Penny loves going on walks. She is so curious about everything and loves to be able to explore. Since she also loves just sitting next to me (or on me) and cuddling, she would make a perfect pet for someone no matter what their activity level is.

Penny has been my foster dog for about 2 weeks now and she fit right into our family from day one. As long as she is with her humans, her world is good and she is content. When I come home from work and sit down to take off my shoes, she comes to me and puts her paws around my waist and lays her head on my stomach and hugs me. I look forward to a Penny hug all day! She does have heartworm and the treatments have been very painful for her to endure. Even though she has been in a lot of pain, she has remained her same sweet self the whole time. She really is an adaptable dog. She would do well in an active family or a more laid-back family. She gets along with our resident dog and our cat and plays with them both when the cat is in the mood!

I can tell she gets a little nervous when she sees a new dog for the first time and she will bark, but I’ve been working on redirecting her when she does this and she is getting better; and once she is familiar with a dog, she doesn’t bark anymore if they meet, like when she and the neighbor dog are out at the same time.

Penny has separation anxiety, so she would need a family where someone could be home with her or, at the most, only worked part time.

She likes to have her own special spots in the house she can go to. We have her dog bed in the living room and her blanket by my bed, and she has requisitioned the cat’s bed and does her best to fit into it!

Penny is a loyal, loving, intelligent family dog. When you see the love in her eyes when she looks at you, it makes you realize how lucky you are to have this dog in your life and how special she really is.

So, I thought I should finally write an update and let you all know how Penny came to be in RAGOM's care.

Penny came to us from another rescue in Oklahoma. We knew coming in that she was heartworm positive and had some separation anxiety. As many of you RAGOM fans, followers, and supporters know, we were up for the challenge. However, when I read the letter from the previous rescue (who knew her WHOLE backstory), I was devastated, and in tears.

Penny was found bloody, broken, and barely alive in a mall parking lot by a SAINT of a woman. She took Penny to a vet who found out this little heap of a puppy had a broken arm, leg, right orbital bone, and multiple rib fractures. The woman said to try and save her at all costs. So, they did! Unfortunately, this single woman couldn't keep Penny as she already had two large dogs of her own and had just been diagnosed with MS. Penny went into rescue and they learned a lot about her, as we have done since she's been with us. Because of her traumatic beginning, Penny does show a little limp with one of her back legs. She does also have significant vision loss in her right eye, but you would never know it, because it doesn't impair her at all! Her right ear is a bit smaller, and may be a little more prone to infection as well (but we haven't had her wet, so it hasn't been an issue). The previous rescue also stated that she loves to swim and that is a good therapy for her stiff rear leg.

Now, Penny is definitely living the GOLDEN life in RAGOM's care and is finishing her heartworm treatments. However, she would LOVE to move to her FURever home. She is just the silliest, most laid-back girl 95% of the time. The other 5%, she's excited to see her humans or wrestle with our resident dog....or chew on the 10 stuffed animals she's dragged over (one by one) to her rug. Or, you'll find her snoozing upside down, like in her picture!

Penny has been with us a few months now and she is a very sweet girl! She is very friendly, cuddly, and people-oriented. Most of the time, she comes to check out what you're doing, then quickly gets bored and just lays down to watch! She occasionally initiates play with our resident dog, but is pretty laid-back and happy to keep pulling toys out of the bin and chew on them by herself.

We have noticed she does seem to have a bit of separation anxiety, which is why she needs someone who is gone less than a full work day. I believe she would do well in a home with someone who stays home, works from home, or is gone less than 6 hours a day. She is on medication and that seems to work WONDERS for her, as long as she is given the medication daily. Crating did not work for her; it just caused more anxiety. Of course, giving her time to settle in and get used to our routine really comforts her as well.

As you can see in some of the pictures, she is very loving and affectionate with my 4-year-old daughter, as well as the cat. We do have another big dog, but we always laugh because it seems that the cat is really Penny's best friend! :) She does listen and respond well to my daughter. Penny will patiently wait for my 4-year-old to clip the tie-out onto her collar before she can go outside. Penny is VERY used to this routine and won't even try to get out of the door before she is clipped in. Since she can't run free around the yard to get her energy out, she also needs daily walks to get adequate exercise. This seems to help keep her calm and lessen her separation anxiety as well.

If you have questions about Penny, please contact your Placement Coordinator! We can't wait to hear from you! :)
