Nala is a beautiful six-month-old, 37-lb female Golden Retriever mix. Nala came into RAGOM by the way of a very caring animal humane society that wanted Nala to have the best chance at a wonderful life and asked RAGOM if we could help. Nala was surrendered to the humane society due to a bite to a child that required medical attention. So little Nala was incarcerated doing "hard time for her crime." What that means is she was given love and cuddles from the very caring staff at the shelter until her quarantine time was up. The staff noted during her stay that Nala was very frightened and would do rollovers with submissive urination. In dogie language, it is the ultimate sign for "I mean no harm; please don't hurt me." They knew Nala needed confidence building and that RAGOM would have more resources to help her.

Nala has a urinary tract infection and is on antibiotics for two weeks. Once that is cleared up, she will be spayed. Nala will finish her series of vaccines next week. This week, Nala had her quarantine exam, got her rabies shot and microchip, and was the hit of the veterinary clinic. She loved everyone there, giving tail wags and getting more than her fair share of attention. She greeted a very tiny dog in the reception area and the two began to play.

In her foster home, she is living with three resident dogs and one foster sister, Missy 13-061. She is also living with two cats and that is a work in progress. She is living in the country and is very frightened being outside. She is frightened of a car that goes by and even the wind in the trees will send her tail tucked to the steps of the house. Because everything frightens her, she needs a physical fence. At this time, she does not come to her name when outdoors. I have been taking her for walks with another dog and she gets confidence from the other dogs. I took her out alone and she is very skittish, so we are working on that. She loves the other dogs and I feel it might be helpful if she had another confident dog in the home. I also think obedience classes would help with her confidence and bond with her new family. She will need a home where there is a commitment to take her to classes and socialize her to the world. The really good news is she loves big people. She has been doing very well on her house-training and catches on to things quickly. We are working on a few issues that she needs help with and she is making progress each day. Nala is starting to trust and that is making all the difference.

Please be aware that Nala is a puppy with age-appropriate behaviors. She will try and counter-surf and chew inappropriate items. Puppies need lots of patience and exercise and long walks. If you are willing to put in the time and effort to help this special girl be the best she can be, please talk to your placement adviser.

Today 1 year ago, we picked up Nala 15-023 from Two Harbors. We could not have asked for a better dog and she had a wonderful Foster Mom Karen. Nala is as healthy as can be and we just love her.

We took her to lessons at the Canine Coach and she learned a lot, her trainer was amazing. She's a rockstar at sit/stays now. Still working on recall though, but that will come with time.

She met her Step-Brother Chevy and they instantly became best friends.

She also became best buds with a lot of humans too and fuurrrever friends!

Celebrating her 1st birthday!

We even had Nala shirts made for the State Fair.

She enjoyed her 1st camping trip on the North Shore this past fall, but the smarty pants learned how to open the tent with her nose.

Nala the ferocious lion.

Needless to say we have had an amazing 2015 and looking to see what 2016 will bring J Maybe even another RAGOM sibling.

Nala was spayed last week and the poor little girl had a hard time of it. After the 36 hours, she was on the mend and now that it has been a week, she is ready to rock and roll.....trying to keep a seven-month-old quiet has been a challenge.

She walks like a dream right by your side with her flat collar. She is such a sweetheart and loves to cuddle. Now that the weather is better, we have been getting out and meeting people. She will need lots of exposure to new places and people. I know with a family that is committed to helping her, she will be such a rewarding addition to a family.

Nala had her urine checked for UTI, and good news: it has cleared up, so she is set to be spayed the first week in March.

I am so happy to report the Nala has been doing wonderfully in her foster home. My brother is over every day, and I don't know what it is about him, but she is smitten and can't get enough of him. She loves to cuddle on the sofa and get her belly rub.

Nala has been fun for the other dogs. Now that she has been here for two weeks, she is playing better with the other dogs, but loves to wrestle. My oldest dog, Ben, who will be ten, has the most energy and they wrestle all the time. I have had to calm the situation down when Nala does not read his cues to calm down. He is so patient with her more then any of the other dogs. Nala would love a home with another active dog. An older dog would be fine, but he would have to have a lot of energy and patience.

The veterinarian thinks she is mixed with Border Collie, which gives her focus, energy, and best of all, she is sooo....smart! This girl would excel as a obedience dog or just a wonderful companion who would love to learn new tricks and keep her mind busy.

She was still having trouble getting into the van, but I knew how athletic she is, so I did the old standby. I threw a treat in the kennel and she jumped right in. She will keep you on your toes because she is always thinking. She is learning to walk with a flat collar. You show her something about five times and she has it. Really smart.

Now that she has been here for a couple of weeks, she is trusting my dogs more and has not been growling or so worried that they would take something from her. I think once she has been around the same dogs and know them, she will not be on guard. She is wonderful with people.

Because she has progressed so well in such a short period of time, we are dropping the age of children to 12+. With the understanding that they would need to be very respectful of her special needs.

This full week with Nala has brought her out of her shell and into her confidence. I have been walking her by herself and she is now out in front of me and letting cars pass by us without more then a second look. The deer in the back have sent her running to the steps, but today on our walk, we saw a couple of does with fawns and she was sniffing the air very curiously. She just melts into a puddle on the floor when you pet her. I have not seen any issues with bones, food, or toys with humans. She does become possessive with a bone or food with other dogs around and will growl to keep them away. It is very easily managed by just feeding her behind a baby gate and picking up the dishes.

This little beauty has come a long way in a week. Nala went to the doctor yesterday and got her last distemper shot. She is doing well on her antibiotics for her UTI and will finish up in a week. She just lays on her side to get her pedicure. What a sweetie. Nala is now 40 lbs.

Nala sleeps all night in my bedroom in her crate and will go in with the door open when she gets tired. She does not whine and has not had an accident in the house since the first day. She loves her walks and loves to play. She has been taking a ride in the van every day since she arrived. She does need help getting in, but can get out by herself. She is very quiet and never makes a peep as she goes on errands.

Nala is going to make a wonderful companion for a lucky family.

You can see by the pictures she loves playing in the snow! Forget the fancy toys; just give her a 3-lb coffee container and she is a happy girl!
