Entered Foster Care Fence Kid Friendly Another Dog Cat Friendly
12/14/2014  Optional Yes  Not Required  No Cats
This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

We would like to introduce Tika.  Tika was rescued from a reservation - his name means 'brave one'.  He is a beautiful 2.5 year old Sheltie/Golden Retriever mix who is as sweet as they come.  He is a petite guy at 47 lbs.  He is in good health and is having his neuter surgery today.

Tika transitioned with ease into our home and has been a perfect gentleman.  He takes treats nicely, walks well on a leash and seems to be totally housebroken.  He likes car rides and sleeps through the night in his crate without a peep.  He loves affection, gives kisses and rolls over on his back for belly rubs.    Tika warms up slower with men and gets a bit fearful if anything pulls around his neck.  He is a fast runner, and since he is very interested in squirrels, bunnies and birds, he would need a fenced yard.Tika is a super sweet boy who would make a wonderful, loving companion for a lucky family.

Hi everyone, Tika here!  I am doing really well in my foster home, but I would really like to find a home of my own soon.  I love going on walks, getting my belly rubbed, running in a fenced in area, getting the zoomies for a few minutes inside, and burying my face in any snow I can find.  My foster mom said I must have lots of insulation with all my fur because she is outside shivering and telling me to do my business, but all I want to do is roll around and play some more.  Can you blame me?

There are two kids here, and I am excellent with them.  I also get along well with a dog named Roxy who lives here.  She knows when she is in my space, and I need a bit of breathing room.  There is another dog here though that I do not get along very well with.  He gets all nervous when I am around and then I feel like I need to show him who is boss.  He doesn’t like that much.  My foster family said that my first foster home didn’t have any other pets, and I was the perfect dog there.  I can’t decide if I want another dog to play with or would rather have a house all to myself.

Tika is really a fantastic dog and is very ready to get started on his new life.  He is all up to date on his vaccinations and has no medical issues at all.  He had one ear infection and that is all cleared up.  He LOVES to go on walks.  If his forever family doesn’t have a fenced in yard, they would need to be committed to bringing him on walks each day.  Tika would also benefit from obedience classes.  Right now I would not trust him at a dog park, until more is learned about how he interacts with other dogs and why he gets along with some dogs and not others.  He has very loving eyes that just seem to talk to you and he would enjoy belly rubs all day if you would give them to him!  Please contact your placement advisor if you are interested in Tika at all!  I would love to talk to you and answer any questions you might have to see if he may be a fit or not.  He will be a great family pet to a very lucky family!

Tika arrived at our home in Minnesota after a long day of driving.  He did very well during the car ride, but was ready to settle into another home. When I first met Tika, I was amazed at how beautiful he was (or maybe handsome is a better word for a boy!).  He has a more petite shape and weighs around 50 pounds.  His fur and coloring are gorgeous!   Tika does need some grooming and to continue eating a healthy diet to get his coat in the best condition possible, but he has come so far in the last three weeks at his temp foster home.  Speaking of that, Tika would like to personally thank the foster home who has had him over Christmas.  He said they really taught him all about living the golden life and gave him lots of love.  He knows he is a very lucky dog!Tika met our resident dogs fairly well.  We have a female and a male dog.  He and the male dog are still trying to figure each other out and we are giving them both lots of space.  Tika has watched our dogs playing fetch and tug.  He decided it looked fun and started running for the ball and getting squeaky toys. Tika was so silly doing this!
Tika also met our cat last night.  Tika was paying close attention to our cat and looked very curious.  However, this evening Tika decided she was going to chase the cat, initially in what appeared to be a playful manner.  The cat turned and started hissing and swatting at Tika.  This only made Tika more "curious" and I am pretty sure Tika would not have backed down if the humans had not stepped in.Tika is now kid approved.  He met our 2 kids with enthusiasm and was very happy to snuggle and cuddle with them.  Tika also slept in his crate without a peep last night and we have used it on and off as a place to relax when he needs it.  His current requirement is that a fence is required.  Because we don't know a lot about his background and he is a VERY fast runner, we think that would be best.  However, if you have a safe way to have him run somewhere else in a fenced in area and can always keep him on a leash or tie-out when you are outside with him, we could consider that. Tika would always then need someone with him outside and couldn't be left alone on a tie out.  I can't say enough how impressed we are with Tika's temperament.  He is just an awesome dog and will make a family very happy!  He so deserves the good life and can't wait to meet a family of his own!  Tika is currently checked out to a family, but he needs to be "cat approved" for them.  We will keep you posted on Tika's story!

We continue to see Tika’s personality develop as he gets more comfortable in our home.   He follows Foster Mom everywhere, loves to snuggle and can’t get enough belly rubs.  He enjoys taking walks and does well on a leash.  Tika is tentative about getting in the car, but once inside he loves riding.

He met other family members over the holidays and loved all the attention.  He still warms up slower with men, but he and Foster Dad have become best buddies.

He has been crated when home alone, but may do fine with free roam.  Tika is the fastest runner we’ve ever seen – he loves to run in the yard.

Tika will be traveling to his permanent foster home in MN this weekend.  Having him with us the past 3 weeks was the best Christmas gift ever.  We will miss this sweet boy, but we know he will find a loving family and a wonderful life.
