Look who has joined the RAGOM family - little Miss Betty! She is a cute-as-can-be 9-week-old Goldendoodle. She and her littermate, Chowder , have been with us just a few days, and are both wonderful puppies.

Betty is a petite 10 pounds and will visit the vet tomorrow. We’ll post an update at that time, but she appears healthy. Betty LOVES people! She follows me around the kitchen, just hoping I’ll stay in one place. She plops down right at my feet for a little nap. She and her brother romp and play in the backyard, but settle down very nicely. Betty has a mellow energy level and loves to cuddle. She gently approached our resident dog as he was snoozing, and with tail wagging, touched his paw a few times. It was a brief but sweet moment.

Betty has been dewormed and had her first set of shots. She will be available for adoption after her spay surgery either later this week or early next week. Betty can entertain potential adopters at any time.

Please remember as you look at her adorable pictures:

  • Puppies are a LOT of work in their first year!
  • Puppies have a small, immature bladder and cannot go a full workday without being let out. You will need to make arrangements for someone to come in midday until she is about 6 months old.
  • Puppies NEED obedience, socialization, and manners training! RAGOM gets many unmannered and undersocialized dogs surrendered due to the simple lack of training and socialization when the puppy was young. This is a crucial time for puppies to learn about so many things!

I have had Betty in my home for 2 weeks now and she has been such a joy to have around! Her previous foster mom did an amazing job with her and Betty sends lots of kisses and cuddles her way!

Betty is a happy puppy and is learning and growing every day. :) She has excellent recall, knows her name and "sit" very well. She is working on "lay down" and "stay." She gets a little too excited to stay now and then! At night, her kennel is clean, but we do have a few potty accidents still. She hasn't shown a clear signal on when she has to go outside, so I've just been letting her out frequently. If I leave to run errands, I have been kenneling her and leaving her with a peanut butter Kong, otherwise I hear her barking as I'm getting into my car.

I'm completely shocked that this beautiful girl isn't with her forever family yet! She has been a great houseguest. She is pretty mellow for a puppy and so far has been good about chewing only on her toys. Betty loves the toy bin and plays a game with foster dad. If he picks the toys up, she takes almost all of them back out right away! Foster dad doesn't like the game, but laughs. She is learning to fetch a ball and sometimes brings it back. If you tell her "good girl" too soon, she will drop the ball to come for pets and praise. Betty loves to play with our resident dog, whether it is chasing, wresting, or tug-of-war.

Betty is going to LOVE going to obedience with her forever family. She's very treat motivated and loves getting praise and hugs. I have a feeling she's going to be the star of her class! Betty is very patiently waiting to show her new family her happy wiggles, bounces, and cuddles. She's ready to give her family the Golden paw of approval. :)

Well, it has been a while since we have checked in! Miss Betty is now 14 pounds and is cleared of all parasites. She is a great eater and responds well to the treats we use for training. Betty is continuing to improve with house training, keeping her crate dry, and sleeping through the night from about 10 pm to 6-7 am. We still have occasional urinary accidents, especially when we aren't paying attention and also when she gets overly excited.

One of our favorite things to do together is go for walks in the neighborhood. Betty is doing well on a leash and enjoys meeting people and especially checking out all the interesting scents. She is quite proud whenever she finds a large stick to try and drag home.

Now that we know her better, here is the ideal family for Betty:

  • A family committed to her continued training and socialization. This cannot be stressed enough! Her forever family needs to have the time and commitment to help her grow into the best dog she can be.
  • Older kids or mellow younger kids. Betty is not a high-energy pup, and she seems to prefer a mellow environment.
  • A playful resident dog. One of Betty’s favorite things is to play with our 10-month-old RAGOM pup. Lots of canine playdates or even doggy daycare could be a substitute for a playful dog in the home.

One of the best things about RAGOM is our group of volunteers. We help and support each other whenever possible. I am sad to say that Betty will be moving to another foster family this weekend, as my work hours have recently increased and it just isn’t fair to this little love. She has stolen our hearts, and so this move isn’t easy for us. In fact, I am sure it is harder for us than for her! Betty will be loved and cared for by an excellent and experienced foster mom, and for that we are grateful. Look for updates from her new foster mom soon!

Betty is doing great! She is learning a few tricks. The very important recall - meaning she comes when called (not sure if she is coming to her name, the tone of my voice, or the tasty treat - possibly a combination of the 3), and sitting. She sits before every meal.

We are continuing to work on potty training. She gets up 1-2 times a night (appropriate for a pup her age), keeps her crate dry, and is doing well with a schedule of going out after meals and playtime. It is the cutest thing to see her running to me after doing her business, actually licking her chops in anticipation of a delicious reward.

Betty is learning how to walk on a leash and is doing quite well. Because of her size, walks around the block are just fine. This is a big improvement; at first, she thought the leash was a chew toy.

It is delightful to watch her play with our resident dog (RD); the two are great buddies. Betty starts out appropriately submissive, rolling on her back at first. Then, as she feels comfortable, she initiates play and even chases. She loves tug-o-war with our RD, even though she usually loses! Betty is still unsuccessful at getting our cat to play with her, but hasn’t given up yet. That curly tail wags and wags anytime she gets sight of him.

This petite beauty has a great personality and will make a wonderful companion!

We welcomed back Miss Betty today. The little peanut has grown and is at least 2 pounds heavier than when she left us (she is on the small side and probably won’t be a large adult Doodle). Betty was adopted last week, but the family realized that despite her sweet demeanor, the timing just wasn't right. Betty slid right back into the routine here and was especially happy to see our 9-month-old resident dog (RD) again. Now that she is healed from her spay surgery, she can run and wrestle. Our RD is equally pleased to have a playmate again. Betty has such a great energy level - she plays and runs outside, and really chills inside. She really loves the belly rubs!

Betty had a mostly good report from the vet. She does have giardia, which is a common intestinal parasite that many puppies have. Fortunately, she has no symptoms (i.e. normal stools), but we are treating her for this. Betty will be spayed this Friday and can be adopted after that.

Now the fun stuff: this little peanut is a doll! Her curly tail wags and she comes running whenever we enter the room. We have started potty training, and Betty is just starting to understand that there is a tasty treat every time she does her business outside. She loves chewing sticks, playing with brother, Chowder, and chasing us in the backyard. She is such a happy girl!
