10/26/2015: Please welcome Champ, now known as Charlie, back into RAGOM! Charlie was adopted about a year ago but due to no fault of his own, he has found his way back into RAGOM. Charlie is about two years old now and has grown into a wonderful dog. Charlie weighs 80 pounds which is a perfect weight for him. He is up to date on vaccines, preventatives and is heartworm negative. Charlie is getting over a case of kennel cough, but other than that he is in perfect health. Charlie is completely house trained, we have not had any accidents since he has been here and he will go to the back door when he needs to go out. Charlie went through quite a bit of obedience training throughout the last year and it definitely shows; he has learned a lot! He even has some hunting training now. We walk Charlie with an easy-walk harness and he does well with it. He does pull a bit at the beginning of walks but he knows how to ‘heel’ and will tone down the pulling when asked. Charlie also has not shown any resource guarding with either us or our resident Leinie.

Charlie does still have some puppy behaviors though; he will counter surf and steal tissues from the trash if it is left uncovered (he doesn’t bother the covered trash cans at all) and he does pick up the occasional sandal or slipper. He hasn’t chewed anything that he shouldn’t, just likes to carry shoes around sometimes! This guy is a big goofball, he loves to play and then loves to snuggle when he’s done playing.

Charlie is a high-energy dog- his ideal home would be with an active family that will take him on walks or runs and give him lots of playtime (he is excellent at playing fetch). Depending on your work situation, another young, playful dog would be preferred in his forever home. We work eight hours a day, M-F, and Charlie is home crated during that time. He does fine in the crate but when we get home he is raring to go. Charlie and Leinie wrestle, play tug of war and chase each other around non-stop. In addition to playtime, Charlie needs a 1-2 mile walk each day. As long as he gets enough exercise Charlie does fine with free roam in our bedroom at night and will sleep soundly from 10 PM to about 6 AM. Charlie would do fine with kids however he does get excited and will try to jump up so younger kids could easily get knocked over. We have not tested him with cats yet however his SO stated he did fine with a neighbor’s cat. Charlie is a great dog and will make some family very happy! This is our Adoption Story!! :)

Charlie, Our Golden Boy

We had a 1.5 year-old golden, Emma Jo, at our house when I decided I wanted to add another golden to our family. I came across this wonderful rescue organization (RAGOM) and I was hooked. I was captivated by the all of the stories and pictures of dog after dog after dog who had been rescued. I was so touched by every single one. As I was looking through pictures of several beautiful dogs who were still available for adoption, I thoroughly read through Charlie's bio and looked through the pictures of him. I was touched by his story; he seemed like he had a heart like mine but needed someone to give him a real chance, someone who would give him a good home and keep and love him forever. I couldn't believe someone hadn't adopted Charlie immediately. I had his bio memorized and explained everything about Charlie and the organization to my husband. He agreed to move forward with the adoption process. We drove to Iowa from Eau Claire, Wisconsin and met Charlie and his foster family on December 27, 2015, the same day we brought him home. Charlie has become such an important and loving part of our family. He and Emma have become good buddies and playmates, and he has become my snuggle buddy. Charlie is such a mama's boy that he will not go to bed unless I am definitely going into the bedroom. He stays up late with me while I study for exams and do homework. He has become a vital part of our family and we would be lost without him. We love you so much Sir Charles. <3

Charlie has been adopted! He has a wonderful new family including his own fur sister who loves to play just as much as he does. Charlie must have known this was his new forever family as he hopped right into their car and didn't look back as he headed off to his new life. We miss him so much but it sounds like he is already feeling right at home. Congratulations to Charlie and the 'S' family!

Charlie is continuing to do great! He has really settled in and is such a sweet dog. Charlie also seems to really like kids- we have about six neighbor children under the age of 8 that love visiting him at the fence every day. Charlie loves attention but isn’t pushy about it. If you are sitting on the couch he will just come sit by your legs and wait for some petting and will also happily roll over for a belly rub. He has discovered the furniture (foster brother Leinie sets a bad example) and we find him napping on the loveseat everyday around 8:30 when he decides it’s time for bed. Charlie is a dog that easily becomes bored, and will look for something to entertain himself - whether it is a toy, or a tissue out of the garbage. He needs a family that will provide a lot of activity, attention and toys to keep him happy!

Charlie has been in several homes in his short two years of life, so here is what we are looking for in his forever home.

·        An active family that will take him on walks or runs, and include him in other activities. Charlie thrives on attention and loves being a member of the family. He would also benefit from additional obedience training, and it would be great for bonding.

·        Another medium to large playful dog to keep him company and help him expend some energy! Charlie does have a pretty physical play style and he is strong, so another dog his size and with a similar play style would be best.

·        A physical fence due to his prey drive, preferably taller than 4 ft, as he has shown in the past that he can easily jump a 4 ft fence. We have not seen him attempt to jump our 5 ft fence, but we do not leave him outside unsupervised.

Hi, I just wanted to give another quick update on Charlie. He is completely over his kennel cough and doing great. He has settled into our routine and is doing very well with our schedule. He does have a lot of energy but is doing great with regular playtime and walks. We do have a five foot tall fence and Charlie does jump up on it, especially when he wants to say hi to someone on the other side. He has not attempted to jump it but per his SO he has jumped a four foot tall fence in the past. We would prefer he go to a home with a 5 foot fence or taller, otherwise if left unsupervised he could get out of a yard with a shorter fence. He was invisible fence trained in his previous home, but he did exit the yard occasionally, so he would need to work on that training. We did give Charlie a bath tonight and he needed a little encouragement to get into the tub but once he was in, he tolerated the bath very well. Charlie is a great dog and would love a family that is going to keep him busy with lots of toys and things to do. He loves attention and will happily roll over for a belly rub or a good back scratch. Charlie has met a lot of new people and dogs and does great with all of them- he is very playful and loves all of the attention! If you would like to meet Charlie let your placement advisor know.

Greetings to all of Champ's fans!

Champ was neutered on 07/03/14 and has fully recovered.  He just had that one day of down time and was back to his normal self the next morning and has healed up nicely.

Champ was able to travel to the lake for the Fourth of July weekend.  He rode great in the crate on the way there.  He is tolerable for car rides out of the crate but our daughter gets tired of him trying to sit in her lap!  I stayed with Champ and RD Buddy 14-009 the evening of the Fourth while the others went to town for fireworks.  Some of the neighbors were lighting of fireworks very nearby and Champ didn't show any nervousness.  That evening there was a storm with a lot of thunder and lightning and it didn't bother him a bit either.  No anxieties for this guy!

Champ was adopted on Friday, July 11th.  FD received a call from the adopters early Saturday morning.  They overestimated their ability to handle him - he is VERY STRONG.  Champ came back home with us on Sunday, July 13th.

So it has been over three weeks now and the following are some things you should know about Champ:

  1. VERY STRONG - PULLS LIKE A FREIGHT TRAIN, BULL, ETC. HE COULD TAKE YOU DOWN IF YOU ARE NOT READY! HE CANNOT BE HANDLED BY CHILDREN - NEEDS TO BE KEPT IN A CRATE WHEN ADULTS ARE NOT HOME. HE NEEDS TO BE LET IN & OUT BY AN ADULT & ADULT NEEDS TO BE BY THE DOOR WHEN CHILDREN ENTER/EXIT. FENCED YARD MAY BE BEST FOR HIM BUT HE DOES WELL ON A TIE OUT AT OUR HOME. WE CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!
  2. VERY FRIENDLY - CHAMP LOVES HIS PEOPLE AND LIKES TO PLAY WITH CHILDREN HOWEVER HE STILL JUMPS UP AND WOULD KNOCK SMALL CHILDREN OVER. HE LOVES TOYS BUT GETS BORED EASILY SO HE NEEDS SOMEONE WHO WILL PLAY WITH HIM AND TAKE HIM FOR LONG WALKS.
  3. NO AGGRESSION - EVEN THOUGH HE IS A RAMBUNCTIOUS BOY HE HAS NO RESOURCE GUARDING ISSUES, TAKES TREATS GENTLY, LETS YOU REMOVE ITEMS FROM HIS MOUTH. AND DOES NOT "PUPPY BITE".
  4. LIKES OTHER DOGS - CHAMP DOES GREAT WITH OUR RD BUDDY AND LOVES TO PLAY.  HE DOES GET VERY EXCITED WHEN WE SEE OTHER DOGS ON WALKS BUT WE HAVE NOT YET "TESTED" HIM WITH AN UNKNOWN DOG. HE HAS MET OTHER DOGS IN A CONTROLLED SETTING AND DOES GREAT.
  5. CHAMP CAME FROM LIVING IN AN OUTSIDE ENVIRONMENT. HE DOES VERY WELL INSIDE THE HOUSE BUT HE WILL LOOK FOR INAPPROPRIATE ITEMS TO CHEW. HE HAS NOT HAD ANY MORE POTTY ACCIDENTS (ONLY TWO THE FIRST WEEK). HE HAS ADJUSTED TO INSIDE LIFE VERY WELL AND HE DOES GET TIRED AND WILL LAY DOWN AND CHILL OUT FREQUENTLY. HE DOES NEED TO BE WATCHED WHEN ROAMING THE HOUSE AS HE WILL BRING YOU A SOCK, SHOE, PILLOW, ROLL OF TOILET PAPER, MAGAZINE, ETC. AND DOES CHEW THEM! HE WILL ALSO TRY TO DIG UP YOUR FLOWER GARDEN & CHEW YOUR PLANTS!

That about sums up what we have learned about this sweet guy.  One thing to keep in mind is that Champ is only 10 months old and has a lot to learn.  He knows sit, lay down and come but can sometimes have selective hearing.  He is also a HUGE puppy.  He only weighs in at 70lbs but he is very tall and VERY STRONG.  Every day Champ is learning new things and it is very exciting to see his progress.  The past two nights he had really good, long walks BUT I have to use the Gentle Leader.  That is a must until he catches on to leash manners.  Champ needs his new Master to take him to obedience classes. Champ is a good boy learning all about the Golden life.  He is just a teenage boy who needs guidance.  Champ loves his people around him and wants attention - something we know he was lacking in his previous life.

Original initial bio~

Introducing Champ ~ he is going to be some lucky family's Champion!  Champ came to RAGOM on 06/21/14 and was at a temp foster until he joined us on 06/25/14.  Champ is approximately 9 months old and weighs 68lbs.  He is a handsome blonde with a beautiful coat  He is said to be a PBGR.  Champ is still intact and will be neutered soon.  He was brought UTD yesterday and we are waiting for some results on his lab tests.  He will be taking a deworming med as he has spent his life outdoors.

Champ was surrendered to RAGOM as he jumped on the SO's children.  From what we know he was kept outside on a tie out.  He needed some TLC and his temp foster brushed him, bathed him and cleaned out his ears.  He also had some matting behind his ears that the vet took care of yesterday. No ear infection either which was surprising.  Champ now looks like a true Champion!

Even though Champ does not weigh as much as he would appear he is a VERY strong boy and very tall.  He does jump up and we have been working on the "down" command.  The jumping occurs on introductions and when we go in or out the door - he wants to be to be right there and part of the action.  We have also been working on the leash.  He gets very excited when he sees another dog, bunny or any other furry critter.  The Gentle Leader is a good tool in controlling him.  He will need a strong person to walk him and teach him leash manners. 

Champ is very friendly and is getting to know what it is like to live inside a home.  He had a pee accident the day he arrived and one more pee accident yesterday.  Overall I will say we are very impressed since the inside life is new to him. 

Champ has not shown any aggressive behavior, no resource guarding and lets us take inappropriate items from his mouth.  We don't think he was ever given a treat in his former life ~ he chewed the treats at first and spit half of them out but he has now learned the treats are yummy!  He takes them very gently. 

Champ will thrive with a family that can work with him on his manners.  He has been around 13 year old girls of all sizes and is very friendly but does jump up when he greets them.  He met a small boy at the vet yesterday but the boy was small enough that Champ must have felt he didn't need to jump up on him. Champ may be best in a home with older children but he is still a pup and just needs training.

Champ sleeps in a crate at night and is crated when we are gone from home.  He will sometimes go lay in the crate on his own.  He has learned that the crate is his own special place.

We feel another dog would be optional.  Buddy 14-009 is Champ's housemate and they are slowly transitioning.  Buddy is about 8 or 9 (we don't really know!) and is learning to tolerate Champ as he tires easily and is used to sleeping his day away.  We think if there is another dog in the household a younger, more playful pup would be ideal. 

Champ shows some interest in tennis balls and likes dog toys.  He also jumped right in the kiddie pool so may also be a swimmer - we will find that out very soon when he gets to travel to that great place called "The Lake"!

This lucky boy is on his way to the Golden life and is learning that humans WILL love him the way he deserves.  Champ is very loving and affectionate, gives kisses and wants your hugs and pets.  If you think Champ may be the boy for you, please contact your placement advisor!
