Welcome Simba to the RAGOM family! He is a Golden Retriever, approximately 7 years old. Simba came in as a bonded pair with Cali 14-163 .

How did these cuties end up in RAGOM's care? The original owners dropped off the pair at a Good Samaritan's home, thinking they were going to dog sit for a couple of days. Well, the owners never came back for them. When the good samaritan got ahold of the owner, she was told that they don't want the dogs anymore. One thing we know about their prior life is that they lived their life under an unenclosed porch. Simba and Cali were very lucky to be in the Good Samaritan's care until a foster was found.

Simba is a friendly dog. He met the 2 residents dogs, all with a wagging tail. His smile is just too funny! When I come home from a workday, he is just so excited with wags, whines, and smiles. And his smile consists of scrunching his nose and showing all of his teeth. At our house, he likes to lay in the living room with the 2 resident dogs. Simba does fine with the cats here; he completely ignores them.

At his wellness exam, he weighed in at 102 lbs. Simba did have an ear infection and was treated for it. Right now, I am checking his ears every other day, doing regular cleanings to keep them clean. Parasites were also found in his stool. He already had 1 treatment of dewormer and in a week, will have another dose of dewormer. Simba has been brought up to date with his vaccinations and tested negative for heartworm.

Simba is one of those Golden Retrievers that likes to have things in his mouth, but is never destructive with them. Most of the time, it's a toy, but he did get ahold of a gardening glove and loved walking around with his prize that he found. We have taken Simba and Cali out for walks around the neighborhood. At first, when they see the leashes, they will run away. So, my trick is to get them in the fenced-in backyard and leash them out there. Simba walks nicely on the martingale collar. Once we get going on the walk, he seems to really enjoy it and keeps up with the resident dogs.

You would think having 4 dogs in the house might be chaotic (2 foster dogs + 2 resident dogs), but Simba and Cali have been super fun and easy to have around. We are enjoying their company as they are very well-behaved.

Their new life began with the Good Samaritan and will continue now as RAGOM dogs.

Our dear Simba was taken to Rainbow Bridge on March 18, 2017. We will miss him always until we meet again. Despite being physically abused most of his life, Simba learned to trust and love again in his forever home with us. Simba found comfort when he first came home with us with his pink blanket which was his safe zone. He then slowly learned to roam the house and sleep on his bed in our bedroom. It took close to a year for him to totally trust us and become a confident dog. When we would come home from work, Simba would greet us wagging his tail and giving us a sneer. We soon learned this was a happy gesture and lovingly called him “Sneery Dearie”. The one friend that gave him the last 10 percent of his confidence was our daughter’s puppy, Moose (a golden retriever also). Simba loved to play (dog wrestling style) and learned to happily bark. Moose gave him kisses which he was afraid of at first, but learned it was a friendly thing to do. Moose taught him courage to bark at the dogs who walked by the house. They took walks together and were best buds. Simba gave back to Moose by being his loyal, constant companion and using up his extra energy in doggy play. Simba’s legacy is that he learned to hold his head up and not cower in fear. You will always be a part of our family, Simba. We love you.

Simba has been adopted by the P. family. I won't ever forget Simba's one-of-a-kind smile! Here is a picture at his new house playing ball.

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

When Simba came into RAGOM's care, he came with Cali 14-163. Recently, Cali has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, so she will not be adopted out and will remain with our family. When there is a special family for Simba, I am allowing him to be adopted out. He's a great dog and will make a family happy.

What is one of Simba's favorite activity? Playing Chuckit! in the backyard. It's a special time every day, because once the dogs are done playing, I put the Chuckit! balls away, so it's a bit of a novelty for all the dogs. Each dog has their own ball. When Simba first got here, he thought every ball was his and would chase the other dogs to get it out of their mouth. Now, I think he gets the idea, that the ball in his mouth is his. He definitely chases the ball, but usually doesn't drop it for me to throw it again. When I throw the ball for the resident dogs, he just likes to run up and down the yard with them. He does let me take the ball out of his mouth easily to throw it for him.

Simba will be at the Goldzilla Foster Showcase from 11:30-12:30.

To all the RAGOM fans out there…

Goldzilla is almost here, September 14th, and we just want to let you know about something very special happening the day of the event. There will be a large board (near the baseball backstop) with all the pictures of available dogs. You can help by purchasing a foster paw print sticker at the merchandising tent in increments of $10, $25, $50, and $100. Once purchased, you will place the paw print sticker next to the picture of the dog you’d like to support. You will also have the opportunity to write that particular dog a note, which will be posted the dog’s page after the event. This is a great way to show support for RAGOM and a particular dog that may be pulling at your heartstrings. Please consider stopping by the merchandise tent to purchase a Foster Fan Board paw print while at Goldzilla.

We had a huge accomplishment since the last update. Simba can go up a flight of stairs now. Whenever all of us would go upstairs, Simba would stay downstairs as he was afraid of the 15 steps. We tried working with him. He would do 5 steps and then turn around and go back down the stairs. One day, all of us and the dogs were upstairs, he must have thought he was missing the party because he put on his big boy pants and came up the stairs all by himself.

Simba is potty trained. In the first week, one of the foster dogs did have some loose poop accidents in the house, while we were gone at work, which would be expected as they are in a new environment. But since their stool has firmed up a bit, no accidents have happened. Simba can hold it up to 9 hours. When someone is home, we let the dogs outside quite often. He doesn't always want to go outside, but I am assuming when he actually has to go potty, then he'll join in with the other dogs going outside. When no one is home, Simba and Cali have free roam throughout the house with the two resident dogs.
