Hunter is a special dog who will be a remarkable pet for the right family. He is comfortable walking with you, a gentleman with the gentle leader. One of the best attributes of Hunter is his character. He is an eager learner. He knows basic commands like SIT, STAY and DOWN. He also likes to run and run and run.... he needs a very active person that can exercise him daily. Hunter is well named. We were playing in the yard and he saw squirrels in the trees. The photos here show how focused he was trying to go in the trees and get those pesky critters. Hunter has a lot of patience when it comes to waiting for the squirrels to come down from the trees.

He is so beautiful and so loving I know he will have a "Happy Ending" with a family who understands and continues to work helping Hunter be his best self.

Are you looking for a large, athletic dog? Here is Hunter. He is a returning 3½ year old gorgeous Golden/Chocolate Lab mix. He is UTD on all shots and been given his heartworm and flea/tick preventive. Hunter had a recurring ear infection that is being successfully treated. He may have some minor allergies. For that reason, we are feeding a high quality Grain Free diet. Hunter weighs 80 lbs.
Hunter is kennel trained and enjoys spending time there while we're gone for a few hours or to relax when we let our cat come upstairs for some family time. Hunter should not go to a home with cats, as he did run after our kitty. Hunter chases things that run. He has a high prey drive. If you want to rid your back yard of squirrels and bunnies, Hunter thinks that is a perfect job. He will also try to chase squirrels on walks.
Hunter is being returned to RAGOM because he had an altercation with another dog. He gets along with some dogs, but not others. Also, the surrendering owner noticed Hunter giving his girlfriend’s young daughter a hard stare. Hunter presently has a training plan. It is important his family continues to work on obedience, calming and control in order to keep Hunter and others safe. Hunter does not back down. Like many dogs, when Hunter is in control he does not always make wise choices.

Hunter has lived the majority of his life as an only dog. He has been interacting successfully with volunteers' dogs during walks and training exercises, and has ignored dogs or shown appropriate interest in several dogs while at the vet or during walks and exercise time. Hunter needs exercise - this is a guy who was born to run and play. He absolutely loves his tennis balls, and given a choice, would take a tennis ball over a treat any day! He's an excellent retriever and will readily drop his ball or toy for you to throw again and again. Hunter loves the water. I see dock diving potential.
Hunter is very loving and affectionate with his adult humans. If you're the active type, he would love to run or hike with you. He's totally accustomed to a Gentle Leader, which will make walking with him a fun experience, even though Hunter would love to chase every squirrel he sees! Slow and careful introductions should be done with other dogs who might be possible playmates.Hunter will thrive and be happiest in a home where he's an only child. Please contact your Placement advisor if Hunter sounds like he's the guy you've been searching for.
Hunter is settling in nicely at our house. It is fun to see his personality start to really shine! He is starting to learn the rules of the house and able to calm down and play with his Kongs. We have been putting him in a crate a couple times a day to get him used to it if need be and he doesn’t seem to mind this. Hunter is also making progress walking on the Gentle Leader, except when we see small animals. So he would be best in a home without cats. Hunter loves to greet us at the door with a toy in his mouth and his whole body wiggling around so much he tends to hit himself in the face with it! He is so goofy!
Hunter met another male dog yesterday and they were not as playful as one might have hoped. We aren’t sure if he’s not a fan of all dogs or just male dogs, but we do know he does get nervous around other dogs. With this newfound information, we will be cautious when placing him to families with other dogs, and it would probably be best if he was an only dog. Hunter is a happy dog that likes to play and play. Sometimes he doesn’t know his own strength, so he will also need to go to a family without small children.
With all of Hunter’s energy, he will greatly benefit from some obedience training. We think if someone works with him consistently to train him on manners as well as basic obedience, Hunter has the makings of a great dog. We like to think of him as a “diamond in the rough,” waiting for the right family to put the time and energy to see him shine. Please contact your Placement Advisor if you would like to meet this gem!!
