Sweet, beautiful Ben. Well-----that sums it up in a nutshell. What a precious boy he is, especially for one having a difficult life.
First, I am going to address the elephant in the room. Yes, Ben is 10 years old. But---he has the most beautiful coat, and at 76 lbs. is the perfect weight, and has no medical or hip problems. He acts and moves like a much younger dog. If you are someone that wants a loving companion and buddy to hang with, Ben could be your guy. No, you will not have Ben for lots of years, but we all know none of us have any guaranties in life and I think Ben has quite a few good years left. He certainly more than deserves some "good years."
Ben has been with us for less than a week, so there is much to learn. He lived with a breeder and has never lived in a home, and amazingly, he has not had one accident. The two resident dogs and Ben have not had one issue and he does follow their lead. At this point, Ben really needs to have another dog in the home so he can continue to learn what it is like to just be a dog that is loved and cherished.
He has attached himself to me and would let me pet and love him all day long, but if I move unexpectedly or quickly, he is quite startled. Ben makes a wide berth around my husband and hid behind my legs when our neighbor man tried to make friends, but he will take a treat from them, so even that is a beginning.
Ben is on some antibiotics because of eating something gross in the yard and when those are completed, he will have to have the big "N" surgery. If this guy has touched your heart at all and you would like to help, bringing in a dog into RAGOM can be very expensive as we have no knowledge of what kind of vet care he has had. He was given a complete physical, shots, blood work, microchipped, and then will be neutered. At this point, Ben is not ready to live with small children or even in a noisy household. A fence is optional as there is no way he is going to leave my side and is always the first one in the door. It never takes the pups long to realize this house living is awesome! A confident resident dog will also be needed. Ben walks politely on a flat collar and leash, and rode on the floor in the car, but we had no problems.
We all have heard about "Gentle Ben" the bear. Well, we have our very own "Gentle Ben" in the house.

It is with great sadness that I am writing to let you know we had to say goodbye to our Big Ben yesterday, 9/9/2017. Despite his glucosamine and carprofen, his legs just wouldn’t work for him anymore and he started having falls and was refusing to walk.
Ben was a good boy. I think he was pretty deaf when we adopted him three years ago. His history was that he was a puppy mill stud in Iowa and pretty much caged for 10-1/2 years.
He had a hard time at first, not being able to go through doorways and we carried him out and left doors open until he trusted us. It was a very long time before he started sniffing on walks. Seeing men and the hose wand continued to startle him always. He never did accept a bone or a toy, but he was a good companion and my little dog loved to groom him and cuddle with him.
We know he loved his well deserved old age and “the good life.” We will miss him always.
