11/4/13: (Malak's initial bio entry)
We would like to introduce Malak to RAGOM. Malak is a 5 month old male Golden Retriever/Lab/Collie mix who is a playful puppy that loves to snuggle! He is one of 8 dogs that came into RAGOM from a hoarding situation in North Dakota where he lived outside and was only fed corn/grains every 3-4 days. When we first met him he was very skinny, scared, and not acting like a normal, healthy puppy. He was taken to the vet the next day by another foster mom and we found out he and some of the other dogs were testing positive for Parvovirus. Malak stayed with his littermate, Cruz, at another foster’s house for two weeks to isolate the virus and give them time to recover. Unfortunately, a couple of the other puppies didn’t survive. There is no treatment for Parvo, so the foster mom had to make sure they were eating and drinking well so they wouldn’t get dehydrated, and also gave them antibiotics to prevent any other infections.
We have had Malak for over a week now, and he is doing so much better and is symptom free. He is no longer the scared, sick puppy but is now an active, happy, sweet puppy! Parvo continues to be present in his body and diminishes over time and is also still present in his stools. However, Parvo is no risk to a healthy, vaccinated adult dog. Malak has adjusted well to life at our house and gets along great with our resident Golden who is almost 4 years old. Malak initially didn’t seem to enjoy going outside, but now is excited to hang out outside in our fenced yard, do his business, and play with our dog.
Malak only weighed 13.8 lbs. when he was rescued, but he has gained at least 3 lbs. and eats like a champ. The vet said a healthy weight for him would be around 23 lbs. Since he had not had any training, we are working on the typical puppy training routine. He is getting the hang of going to the bathroom outside, but has an occasional accident and has a harder time holding it in his crate when he is in there for longer periods of time (at night, when we are at work), but this is to be expected because he is still quite young and doesn’t have the bladder capacity yet. He doesn’t mind going in his crate (as long as he gets treats), but he is anxious to get out of it when we get home or wake up. Otherwise, he doesn’t whine or bark while he is in the crate. He is also quickly learning how to sit and wait when he is told. Learning not to jump up on people and not to play bite is a work in progress, as with any puppy. He has not been around cats or kids yet, but he loves all people so far and seeks out their attention. I think he would easily adjust to any loving home.
The vet would like to wait until the end of November to think about neutering Malak to allow him time to gain weight and recover from Parvo. Malak will not be able to go to his Forever Home until he is neutered and recovers from the surgery, but he is available to meet potential adopters. If you are looking for a sweet, smart, outgoing puppy that likes to curl up next to you, Malak is your guy!
