Meet  Kodi , a super sweet 13 year old honorary golden!   Kodi , whose name is spelled with a heart over the i because she is so darned sweet, has been in foster care for a couple of weeks now, so we could get to know this little sweetie. Kodi looks more like a Labrador Retriever than a Golden, but she is just adorable and has a very sweet disposition. She is up to date on all her shots and was given a clean bill of health from the vet, except for three kinds of bacteria in her ears.  Kodi has been fighting ear infections for quite awhile as she has some old hematomas in both ears, but she is a champ about the pills and the ear drops.  She has a lot of energy for a 13 year old dog, loves to play in the yard and roll in the grass.  She's even managed to jump up on the couch a few times!Kodi is getting along well with our three resident dogs.  Whey they start to get a bit rough in their play, she will give them a quick bark and head off in the other direction.  We're told that she is great with cats and kids, but we haven't tested her.  So far, she appears to be a totally bomb proof dog, who loves everyone! She has made herself at home on all the dog beds, and happily sleeps at the foot of the bed at night.  She has free roam of the house with the dogs when we are gone and hasn't gotten into any trouble.  About the only thing about Kodi that isn't darned near perfect is she likes to shred stuffed toys, to get the squeaker out and then she likes to throw the stuffing all over the house.Right now, Kodi's needs are pretty simple.  She does need a fenced in yard, as her former family said she likes to wander.  She is awfully curious about life on the other side of our fence, so we agree that she needs a fenced in yard.We think she would do well either as an only dog or with other dogs in the home, as she loves to be with both people and dogs.  Kodi needs a family committed to keeping her ears clean, and she is prone to ear infections.  Other than that, we think Kodi would do well just about anywhere.  She's a super happy girl, who just loves everyone.Kodi would like her former family to know that she misses them but she is doing very well in her foster home.  She loves you very much and will never forget you.If you are interested in learning more about this little sweetie, contact your placement adviser.

Updates

I've been delaying sending this update on Kodi because I just couldn't bear to actually write it. As a foster, you always hope to write a happy, cheerful last update because your beloved foster dog has gone on to a forever home. Sometimes that just isn't meant to be, especially when you foster senior dogs like Kodi. We had to say goodbye to our sweet girl much sooner than we were hoping, as she lost her battle with gastrointestinal lymphoma.

Kodi's last few weeks were filled with lots of treats, toys and soft beds, and lots and lots of love. She still enjoyed going for a short jaunt out in the yard and the occasional roll in the grass, but it was clear she was slowing down as she spent the majority of her time sleeping and she was losing weight, as well as having some issues getting up and down. She had a really great day on Saturday, with multiple rolls in the grass, a drink from the pool, and she even stuck a curious paw into the big toy box in the living room, digging for a toy. However, on Sunday she refused her breakfast and it just seemed that her energy was gone. We tried to coax her to eat all day Sunday but she just wasn't interested and we knew it was time to let her go.

Monday we treated her to a breakfast of bacon, eggs, and toast, which she ate with some coaxing. She spent a quiet morning with her foster family snuggling with her and telling her just how much she was loved. She enjoyed a Dairy Queen puppy cup topped with bacon to give her strength for her journey, and then she went peacefully to join her beloved foster brother Tobi at the Bridge. I know they are causing all kinds of trouble and raiding all of the cookie jars, together.

Kodi's foster family would like to thank her sponsor and everyone who followed her page and donated in her name. We miss Kodi more than we know how to say, but we didn't want her to suffer. She was too sweet of a girl for that.

Godspeed, our sweet Kodi, with a heart over the i in your name because you are so darned sweet. We love you.

Hello from Kodi!  It's winter in the northland, and she certainly has been trying to hibernate.  She isn't a fan of this cold and would really like it if spring would come.

Kodi would love to thank her sponsors, Mollie Anne Jones and Allie 12-372 for sponsoring her!  And thank you for the kind thoughts!!

Kodi would also like it if her new puppy foster brother would just "disappear" and never come back!  She isn't a fan of the little guy's antics and isn't shy about letting him know.  However, Levi's arrival did teach us something about little miss Kodi.

She's been holding out on us.  Kodi LOVES to fetch.  We haven't had many toys around because she wants to eat them, but with the puppy we got a bunch of Kong type rubber toys, and she hasn't chewed those up.  The puppy is a fetching fool, and one night we were tossing the ball down the hallway, and Kodi took off after it!  Now, she has a few toys that she really likes, and a couple of times a day she will bring them to us to throw for her, it is so cute.  She has the most adorable little loping gait, and she looks so pleased with herself when she comes back with her favorite toy!

Here are a couple of recent photos of Kodi, one with her foster brother Tobi, who she adores.  If you are interested in this sweet girl, please let your placement adviser know.  And Kodi says "stay warm, spring is coming"!

Fall is here, and Kodi is loving rolling in the yard, in the leaves and all the good fall smells.  She still really prefers being indoors to outdoors, and after she has rolled, sniffed and done her business she is ready to go back in the house and curl up on a dog bed.

Kodi is sorry she couldn't meet any of her fans at Goldzilla this year.  It is just a little too much walking for the old girl, but if anyone is interested in meeting her, she loves ear scritches and almost any kind of treat.  She really is a terrific dog who would love to be an only dog and get all of the attention.  She doesn't ask for much--a short walk, a nice conversation while you scratch her ears, a soft dog bed or two, and she has much love to give. True, she isn't a Golden, but she has a big Golden heart!

Here are a couple of photos of Kodi, one sharing french fries with her foster brother Tobi.  She definitely has mastered the Golden Retriever begging game, and she would love to meet you, so if Kodi tugs are your heartstrings let your placement adviser know and we'll see if we can arrange a meeting!

Thanks to Jolynn Nelson for the paw print in Kodi's honor--she's sure Goldie was a very special dog!

Hello from Little Miss Kodi! She's still hanging out in foster care, doing her thing. She's such a sweet, kind of sassy little girl who is still looking for a place to hang her leash in her retirement.

Kodi has had a bit of a rough month or so. She had a couple of large tumors removed that were thankfully benign, so we're very happy about that. One was in her ear, the other on her face. She seems much more comfortable and happy now that they are off and not bugging her, as she was scratching at them quite a bit.

She's also been getting used to some changes in the pack here. Her foster sister, Sadie, went to the Rainbow Bridge a few weeks ago, and she really seems to miss her. We adopted a young dog a few months ago, and Kodi isn't wild about him. However, she's a go-with-the-flow kind of girl, and they have worked it out--basically, they just ignore each other.

Kodi is such an easy girl to have around. She doesn't ask for much more than an occasional ear scritch, food in her dish, and a little play time in the yard. She seems to prefer being in the house more than hanging out in the yard, laying on a rug or dog bed. Once in a while, she will jump up on the couch, but that is pretty rare. She would love a quiet home where she could be the center of attention and just hang out with her people.

If you are interested in our little sweetie, please let your placement adviser know. Here are a couple of current photos of Kodi; she isn't a fan of having her picture taken!

Well, another week in foster care, and another lesson we have learned about little Miss Kodi.  Kodi LOVES stuffed squeaky toys.  She loves them so much that she spent the better part of three days doing nothing but tearing them apart to get the squeakers out!

Turns out, she was doing more than just tearing them up, she was apparently eating bits and pieces of them when we turned our backs.  We first noticed that she had eaten a piece of one of the toys a few days ago, when we saw something green in her stool.  When we took a look, we found that it was a piece of a stuffed toy that she had passed, so we picked up the stuffed toys and closed the lids on the toy boxes.  The resident toy hog was NOT happy with that development, as he lives for squeaky toys.

We didn't worry too much about it as she is eating normally and having normal stools, and her energy level is better than her younger foster siblings.  However, this morning she was a little urpy, and when we looked at what she had vomited up, we noticed it was two small fabric balls and some stuffing.  We'll continue to watch her to be sure we don't see anything else, or for any changes in her health or behavior.

SO, this means that Kodi absolutely cannot have stuffed toys in her forever home.  We watch the dogs pretty carefully and never saw her eating anything, but she clearly did so we know she can't be trusted with them.  She is just fine with balls and Nylabones, and she loves both, but nothing she can tear apart.

Aside from that, Kodi is just a little sweetie.  She jumped up on the couch a few times this week and snuggled up. She has found her voice and barks when people come to the door, or when we come home.  She has the routine figured out, knows when I say it is time to go night-night to curl up on one of the dog beds.  She's really a joy to have around, and would make a great addition to almost any situation.  If you are interested in learning more about Kodi, contact your placement adviser!
