Happy 4th of July from Summit a 7 week old pup who just came into RAGOM. Summit is a golden mix, whose dad is purebred golden and whose mom who is a golden/lab mix. Summit and his brother, Harley, are from an accidental litter of 10. Summit is all black with a little bit of white on his chest and is much bigger than Harley.

The pups appear to be healthy, have had their first puppy shots, and been dewormed. We just picked them up yesterday and they are delightful! They slept all night long, have been eating and drinking well, and so far have gone potty as soon as they go outside!

More after they have had their visit at the vet.

Updates

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

I just saw that there was an update on Goose's brother Harley/Gretzky and thought I should send in a note too.  They look so much alike (minus the coloring) with their big ears and sort of sad faces.  It's silly.

Goose is the best dog ever.  I can't imagine life without him. We take him with us everywhere we can (he's been to the nursing home, in boats, to the pumpkin patch, camping, to cabins and even on a bus!)  and he just rolls with it.    Here are a couple of things we have learned about Goose since our last update.

He LOVES the snow.  He would sit outside for hours in the snow and doesn't seemed to be bother by the cold at all. He has become our cross country skiing and snowing shoeing buddy.  He gets us outside everyday.

He can jump really high.  He could easily jump the 3 foot fence in the yard so we had to replace it with a 4 foot (pretty sure he could get over it if he really wanted to) because he would jump to chase the kitty next door or to try and get closer to us if we were outside the fence. Silly dog.  He even jumped the fence at Goldzilla from the agility course to chase the lure thing (or the dog chasing the lure, I can't be sure).  As soon as I called he came sailing back over like it was no big deal.

He is a draper.  He is always draping his body over everything, especially when he is tuckered out.  His extra skin just exaggerates the look. It looks like he's melting.  It's hilarious.

He is a fantastic swimmer and loves the water.  He will jump off the end of the dock at the cabin to retrieve sticks (the only time he retrieves anything) and likes to cool off in his kiddy pool.

He is turning brown!  Yep, this black dog isn't so black anymore.  His muzzle, inside his ears and his paws are turning bronzy color.  His tummy has also turned all salt and pepper looking.  It's easier to see in the sun.

He loves to relax, but he likes you to be relaxing too.  If he's tired and wants to nap on the couch he will come whine at you to sit with him.  Sometimes I can't figure out what he wants and then I'll get sit on the couch and he crawls up and let's out a big sigh and takes a nap.  It's pretty cute.

He is a fantastic morning cuddler.  He makes a great little spoon and will jump back in bed to snooze with dad after breakfast.

He likes to go for canoe rides.  It can be a little nerve racking when he shifts his weight cause he's 75lbs and it does rock the boat a little but he can get in and out of the boat on his own now and love to sit and watch the scenery go by.

He loves to rollerblade.  My husband and I got rollerblades this spring and we got Goose a harness.  He didn't want to pull at first, but we worked with him on it and now he run like the wind and can pull me pretty far.  We are looking for a skijoring harness for this winter.  This is the best way to tire him out.  Runs are good, but rollerblading really gets the afternoon crazies out.

He like his routine.  For example, he gets up at the same time every morning, comes to the side of the bed for face scratches, walks through the house the same way (through the living room and dinning room, which is not the most direct path) to go outside, eats breakfast, snuggles with dad, goes back outside, comes inside to rub his face and body on the back of the couch, sits between us as we eat breakfast for face scratches and then waits for his Kong.  Every morning.  It's kind of freaky.

He's a great camper, although he is very suspicious of people walking by in the dark and let's us know they are there by giving a low throaty growl.  He loves to hike and could walk and sniff around all day and he also loves the dog park.

He doesn't really chew anything inappropriate expect for slippers.  He has become quite the slipper connoisseur.  Doesn't matter what kind, wool, cotton, down, leather, they are delicious, especially the leather ones. Bad puppy. Well, I did leave a Halloween costume hat out and he chewed that.  Who would blame him.  I think he is trying to tell me he doesn't love to be dressed up, but the kids in the neighborhood LOVE it so he'll have to deal.

Anyhoo, this is way more than anyone probably wants to know.  I just get so excited because having him around makes me so happy.  We were so lucky to get him!  Thank you!!

We have fallen in love with this puppy!  We knew within a day or two that he needed a goofier name to match is silly ears and go with the flow goofy personality.  We picked Goose, but also like to call him Goober, Monster and Mr. Butters (not sure why).  Goose is our first dog and I don’t think we could have found a better match.  He is such a sweet dog.  He’s just like us, he loves to be active but also loves to just hang out and  snuggle on the couch.  He is great with kids.  We don’t have any yet but he always wants to say hi to the kids in the park.  He has also used our woodpile to jump our fence to say hi to the girls next door.  They could scream in his face and pull his ears and he just sits there.  He is sooo gentle.  My one and half year old nephew was feeding him treats last night and he gently took them out of his hand.  My nephew was so excited and kept saying "hi dog" and patting him on the head.  It’s pretty cool for a 7 month old puppy to be so mellow around kids.

Goose loves to be outside.  He would sit in the backyard chewing sticks all day if we let him.  He has totally destroyed our garden and disassembled our woodpile.  He also loves to go for runs everyday in the woods and go to the dog park to play with other dogs.  He has been wearing a blaze orange vest when we are out in the woods (black puppies are really hard to see at dusk) and seems to like it and sticks with us even off the leash. We are hoping to get a doggie hiking pack for Christmas and can’t wait to take him backpacking up north in the spring. He also enjoys swimming and is really good at it.  His paws are totally webbed.  When his toes are spread out they are like little paddles.

Goose also loves to destroy anything with stuffing in it.  You can see in one of the pictures that he will pull out every little bit possible.  We even buy the stuff-less toys, but he still gets the little itty bit of stuffing out of their heads.  He also loves to chew hooves and peanut butter kongs and loves to find stinky socks and carry them around the house.

We found out very quickly that he is a vocal dog.  As soon as we started the drive back with him from Iowa when we picked him up he was baying in the crate in the back.  His brother Harley (#12-251) had a DNA test done and it came back as ½ Golden Retriever, ¼ Catahoula Leopard and ¼ Mutt. Catahoula Leopard would definitely explain is howling and baying and the way he trees squirrels.  He has a big bark!  It surprises people all the time and scares people when they walk past our yard.  You would never expect it to come out of him.  He is also always making silly noises and grunting.  My favorite is this low throaty grrrrrrrrr (with rolled R’s) sounds he makes, like a wookie, when he wants something.  Sooo cute.  He’s getting really big too.  He was weighed last week and is already 60 pounds.  He doesn’t look it.  Goose has short legs, is pretty stocky and has tons of extra skin, especially around his neck.  He face looks very houndy with his droopy eyes and jowly mouth.  He paws are still as huge as they were when he was a puppy.  After looking at pictures of Catahoula Leopards, I think they are going to stay that way.

We have been taking him to obedience classes and are currently in level 4.  Goose can sit, lie down, sit up, shake, stay, wait, sit for greeting, come and we are working on roll over and having him help us take in the mail, but it’s sort of a mess right now. I've given up on retrieving, he always looks at me like I'm crazy when I throw something for him. We plan to finish all of the classes available and then take the canine good citizenship test. We are also thinking about doing therapy dog classes next summer after he turns one.  We have had a couple of people suggest it after meeting him.  He might just have the perfect personality for it.

He’s turning out to be a pretty awesome addition to our family!  Thank you RAGOM!!  And thank you to his transporters and the ladies who found him and got him to RAGOM and Karen and David for taking such good care of him before we could take him home. We love him!
