Duke 12-165

Profile

Let us introduce Duke! He is a 6 year old boy who acts like a 3 year old. J We picked him up on Sunday after a long journey from boarding in South Dakota; thanks to a great transport team and a special thanks to the boarding facility for taking good care of him before we could transport him!

After picking him up from transport we headed to Bubbly Paws for a well deserved bath and by the end of bathing Duke was kissing the owner and receiving treats for being a ham.

Duke is really sweet and loves attention and giving attention back…even to complete strangers. Our first walk he kissed a woman sitting near the path talking on a cell phone. She invited him over to pet him and he slobbered all over her face. So cute! She loved it.

We have been told Duke is a Golden Retriever Husky mix. His tail is shaved right now because it was too matted to brush out; it will be interesting to see if his tails fills back in like a Retriever or Husky. That is if you can even see his tail…it is usually whipping back and forth. He has a muscular build and puffy soft hair, so it is hard to tell if he is at his ideal weight. His paper said he weighed 75 pounds, but we will weigh him when we take him in to be checked out.

He has been good with other dogs and rides nicely in the car. He is not a fan of the crate. He will go in, but he definitely doesn’t want to be in there. We plan to work more with him over the weekend to show that the crate is a safe place. So far we have not had any accidents in the house, although he did get sick, maybe from eating too fast or from playing too much and then eating immediately.

Duke is up to date on vaccines and neutered. His recent neutering incision is still mending so we are trying not to overdo things. I have taken him to two 3 mile walks and the first walk he spent most of it “marking” territory, sniffing and eating grass. Our resident dog Ally has some anxieties and will walk with her head between my legs. So about half way through the walk I came up with the idea of threaded Duke’s leash through Ally’s mid leash handle to keep them close to each other. Ally would keep trucking along and keep Duke from marking or eating grass and Duke would keep Ally from hiding behind me. They seemed to have a great time. You can see the picture of the two of them together on their jaunt. The second walk was a little more chaotic. Ally still wanted to hide for most of the walk and Duke would casually bark at bikes passing by; only if the biker didn’t smile. J I will find a path with less bikes.Last night I took Duke for a 15 minute walk around the neighborhood and he met a group of 4 kids. All were petting him and Duke administered a bunch of kisses and his tail was out of control. One of the girls could not get over how soft he was. He does need some manners and needs some training to not jump on people. We currently need to keep him from jumping up, so it may be wise for Duke to be with older children or at least dog savvy kids. Duke does know how to sit, but is not consistent. He jumps up and we will work with him on that. I think this boy would do well in obedience. He is eager to please and loves the attention.

Duke is not baby gate trained. He has jumped right over them. As of right now Duke would be best in a fenced yard, the taller the better, since he is so interested in what is going on in the surrounding neighborhood. We have a four foot fence and we feel he might be able to jump it. He puts his paws on it to look beyond so we don’t leave him alone. He did run away from his surrendering home in rural South Dakota numerous times and can reportedly open doors. Duke’s surrendering owners decided RAGOM should help find a new family to keep him safe. I am sure it was a tough decision, since he is such a sweetheart.

He does have a bit of a wheeze when he lies down, so we are keeping an eye on him to see if he might have a cold. We will report back soon with more photos and information.

This boy has come a long way to find his new family. If you think Duke is the dog for you, please contact your placement advisor.

We have an update on Duke! He is back in MN!!

He moved to Maple Grove, MN last month with his forever family from South Dakota!

He wants you to know that he has discovered swimming and retrieving along with this move. He is 10 now with severe arthritis- and Loves the water.  (In SD- there aren't many swimming holes for canines where he's been raised!) So it has been a joy for his family to him learning new tricks!

He enjoys picking out a rawhide at Chuck and Don's- and then discovering the local dog parks. He thinks it's awesome!

Hello from Duke's former foster's again!

We had an awesome surprise this weekend Duke stopped by and he played with our current foster dog Buddy 12-343.

I think Ally would have liked some wrestle time with Duke too, but Buddy was a little jealous. Duke was such a good boy! He even told Buddy when he was not okay with him "in his face." What a good boy!!

I am so thrilled Duke found the perfect forever family! They even shared a video of Duke, with a funny face he makes when he is feeling "guilty." We never saw this in foster care and it is a hoot!

Enjoy some photos of Buddy and Duke wrestling.

Duke's forever family sent us some adorable pictures of him with Santa. I had to share!

They just adore him and he looks so happy!

First grooming since we picked him up!
He is really "bonded" to all of us now and we all just love him!!

Thursday, August 9, 2012

We just received an email from Duke’s forever family. They say, “He is looking more and more relaxed and contented! We just love him!!!

We couldn’t be more thrilled for him and he looks so happy! He has been waiting for this family to come along and they were worth the wait!

Enjoy a picture of Duke showing how happy he is. We also want to share one last photo of Duke…We took Duke for a bath the day he was picked up and we snapped a picture of him enjoying his after bath treat…ice cream! Duke and Ally were both enjoying the ice cream after their baths.

Yeah!! Duke’s mom and brother drove from South Dakota to pick him up today! We have received a couple of pictures from the trip home. Duke made himself at home between the two front car seats. Duke also enjoyed attention from his brother on one of the stops.

Then we received an update with pictures after they arrived home. I think this boy has made himself at home! Good job Duke! Be a good boy!!

We were out of town, over the weekend and we were fortunate to have another RAGOM foster take Duke in!

Duke met their resident dog, Buddy, without incident. There is even a picture of the two dogs sitting side by side. (Duke is the dog on the right.) Good sniffs and then moving on to the yard and all the new smells. There was a marsh close by, which we have no doubt Duke would hop into if he spotted a muskrat or a duck!

Duke’s “weekend” Foster Mom liked the picture of Duke next to the pile of wood. Their family was starting to build a deck and knew a mouse had taken residency in the pile of lumber. Duke didn’t waste any time in his pursuit of the mouse. Thankfully he did not actually catch the mouse…yuck! However, the picture does look like Duke ate a little dirt while digging at the ground and lumber. The picture looks like he's saying, “What?! There was a mouse under there!”

We also had reports; Duke did great with the kids. “He was SUPER!” The kids climbed on him a few times and he didn't even bat an eye! They did not have a fence, and really didn't test him on not having a fence. However, they agree Duke would probably come back when call as long as there was not a “great” distraction. (ie:Squirrels, Rabbits, Ducks, Muskrats, etc…)

The family thought it was a pleasure having him stay at their house and were a little sad to see him go. “What a lover he is.”

Lucky dog Duke met a wonderful family last week and they have decided to adopt him. They are planning to pick him up as soon as they are back from a family vacation. We couldn’t be happier for the big palooka! They even sent us some picture from their visit with us! He is going to have one brother, two sisters and a mom and dad…he couldn’t ask for more.

Lucky for you Duke Fans, this boy is still looking for his forever home!

My husband has created two Blackberry eating machines! The Blackberries are ready to eat, so he thought, I wonder if the dogs will like them. Now when Duke and Ally are let outside to go potty, they both spend about ten minutes eating the fallen berries and picking berries off the stems. Duke has been funny because he has picked berries that were not quite ready and he has taken too big of a bite…ouch! (Duke is on the left in the picture of both dogs.)

Please contact your placement advisor if you are interested in talking to us about this big palooka.

Duke does not seem to have any thunderstorm or fireworks anxieties. Resident dog, Ally, was hiding in the bathroom on the 4th of July and Duke took his usual “cuddle” spot on the couch. He continues to be a happy boy.

He is the first foster dog we have had who is more interested in men than women. It has only been recently, that Duke has started following me around more. Usually if my husband is home he likes to be in an eye shot of him. However, I caught a picture of Duke keeping his eye on me while I was brushing my teeth. He is such a sweet guy. He is a great walking partner.

We are so lucky to still have Duke! Our resident dog Ally loves having him around so she can wrestle him. We think Duke lets her win.

Duke did meet an interested family recently with two cats; which we brought him over to meet. When he met one of the cats he sniffed and was very excited. He play bowed and barked playfully at the kitty to play, but didn’t get the hint that when a kitty hisses; this means the kitty doesn’t want to play. He was too interested in this little orange cat. We think he thought it was a miniature golden retriever which would want to wrestle also. J We are not saying he could not live with a cat, it would just need to be the right cat, maybe a cat that can tell Duke who is boss.

Duke has been helping us in the garden. He will explore by the tomatoes to make sure no squirrel or rabbit has been overstepping its bounds and he will check to see if anything in the garden is ripe for picking. What a good boy! We filled up the kiddie pools for the dogs, with this streak of hot weather. He seemed very intrigued with the water, but didn’t lay down in it. He would stick his nose in the water and blow bubbles. We thought the bubble blowing was pretty cute.

Duke is still looking for his Forever home. Please contact you placement advisor if you are looking for a dog to give you kisses! We took Duke for a bath last night at Bubbly Paws and they were having a Bath Party. We were lucky to have Kate Sweet capture a picture of Duke shaking. She gave us permission to post her photo.

Duke is so adorable! And clean too!!

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Next week around this time we should be hearing from Duke’s potential family; just getting back from a work trip. In the meantime we are continuing to wear Duke out!

This past weekend we had a visiting RAGOM dog Handsome 12-160 for four days. We were able to introduce Duke to Handsome slowly and then we had no problems. Well, unless you consider non-stop wrestling a problem! J

I want to share some of the photos we have taken over the past week. Duke still likes hanging with our dog Ally. He loved wrestling with Handsome, which gave Ally a break. Duke spent most of his wrestling time on his back swatting up at Handsome. Mr. Handsome even pulled on Duke’s ears and bit his legs. Duke didn’t correct Handsome for the rough play, so we broke up the wrestling, so Handsome didn’t pick up bad playing habits.

Of course, I also included a picture of Duke sitting next to me on the couch. He is so cute and loves, loves, loves to have attention from “his” people.

Thursday, June 14, 2012

Time has really slipped away from us…good news, Duke has met a promising potential forever home, but we need to wait until he is back from a work trip to make it official.

We have some more good news! Last night we took Duke over to another RAGOM volunteer’s house and met a bunch of dogs. We had no problems.

The first dog we met was a senior female, named Ally, who is not afraid to tell another dog off and will not back down. We started the meet and greet by passing each other with the dogs on the opposite sides of us. Duke was very interested in meeting Ally and kept his eyes on her, but didn’t bark at all. Duke and I then followed her around the yard, so he was able to get close enough to sniff her. Then we brought them together again, so they could both sniff at the same time. Duke had a little bit of posturing, but was at ease when we spoke to him and said, “Good boy.” I learned I may have been the trigger for Duke wanting to scruff another dog. When I would see the posturing before, I was pulling him away. This scenario was more comfortable because the other person knew her dog was ok and wanted to see what Duke would do. He was fine!

Next we went to the fence of her back yard and 3 adorable male puppies bounced to the fence. Duke went nose to nose with the puppies and then barked and the puppies ran away. Two of the puppies came back for more and Duke just sniffed them again with no barks. I think part of him didn’t know what they were! Before we entered the backyard the resident male retriever, Scooter, came out and met Duke through the fence, both sniffed and seemed fine. We then put the puppies away and put a leash on Scooter. I then brought Duke into the backyard, and he and Scooter met with sniffs and were okay.

Then a second female retriever, Spirit, came out off leash and met Duke with no problems. Spirit seemed more worried about me than him. Lastly, a third female retriever, Dorie, came out. Dorie, was very leery of me, so to allow Duke to meet her I had to drop his leash to let him go over to her. Dorie ran out of the house and Duke ran over and met her, then ran back. At this point Duke was sharing a backyard with four other adult dogs and was definitely a little anxious, but in a good way. It was like he was on overload of which one to meet again. I stayed long enough for all of the dogs to relax a little bit. We even got to meet the puppies again. The puppies were a little leery of Duke, but Duke was very interested in seeing what they were. It was pretty cute.

I was trying to get Duke to play with Dorie, but he was to be near the “people” and Dorie was staying away from the “people.” However, Scooter was able to initiate play with Duke and it was pretty cute. Duke really didn’t care this smaller dog slapped him and sat on his head. He just takes it and starts more wrestling.

The lesson I learned was to give Duke vocal praise when meeting another dog to get him to relax more. Slow introductions are still good with him, since he is just slightly more anxious/excited to meet other dogs.

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

We have had Duke for a few weeks now and feel we know more about his needs.

We feel he would do best in a fenced yard. We think this will not only keep him from wandering off, but it would also keep strange dogs from wandering into the yard. He will also need frequent walks. He could easily take a 3 to 4 mile walk twice a day, however one will do. Duke walks nicely on a leash when we use the harness, but he will pull if just hooked to his collar. He has a lot of energy and we think he may make a good running partner.

Duke responds well to his name and will follow you all around the house. Outside, he seems to have more trouble with remembering his own name. J However, inside, he is somewhat a Velcro dog, so you will never be too far from this four legged furry supervisor!

Duke seems to like other dogs, but we are not convinced he needs to live with another dog. He has met female and male dogs and has been very friendly. If he were around another dog he would definitely want to play with the other dog. We have not allowed him to play with unneutered dogs or recently neutered dogs, since he still wants to react toward them. The good thing is Duke is giving very clear signals to his humans, so we know when we should remove him from a situation or at least cross the street. J He is such a good boy with good body language and vocals. He has been one of or easiest fosters we have had. He is the first foster to get our resident dog to play!

Thanks to a wonderful RAGOM volunteer we were able to “cat test” Duke last weekend. He passed the test, but I would still say it might depend on the cat. The cat we met was the boss and was not afraid to swat at the large dog. Needless to say Duke was afraid of this cat! J

Duke does not resource guard his food or treats from us or our dog. We have be able to trade the high value treats for another treat if we need him to let go. He will grip a bone tight, but does not growl at us. (Our resident dog does the same thing…she will develop lock jaw, so she doesn’t need to give up the bone.)

Only barking he has done so far is at unaltered male dogs. He also barked this last week when I came in a different door. However, once he saw me he stopped barking.

Duke LOVES car rides! He is so good in the car. I could see him being a good dog to take with you a lot of places.

We haven’t tried to take Duke swimming yet, but on walks near creeks and ponds we have to keep him from exploring the water and possibly jumping in. Duke seems to have a high prey drive for birds. Ever since we walked through a swampy area with ducks we have noticed he is always on the lookout for birds.

This guy has done really well with the thunderstorms rolling through. Our resident dog is afraid, but the storms do not seem to faze him one bit. He actually seemed a little perturbed with our dog that she wasn’t willing to play anymore during the storms! J

Duke has been trusted with limited free roam since day three. We usually shut off the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom just to remove some temptations and so far so good. I do not think the dogs do anything, but lay around while we are away. When we get home it is a free for all wrestle mania time! We have not left him alone yet, he is usually with our resident dog.

We have only caught Duke “counter surfing” a few times and he is not doing it to get food…he is getting a better view out of the window.

Duke has been known to “de-stuff” a toy after it has lived out its purpose. We often find brightly colored fur in his stool. The only inappropriate chewing he has done has been socks. It is a good reminder to us to make sure our socks make it into the laundry hamper.

He is a pretty typical dog, that just needs to be managed just like any dog by removing the temptations.

Friday, May 25, 2012

I finally captured the picture I have been trying to get! It has been hard to get, since he is usually trying to administer kisses. Check it out. Duke has a mustache! He looks like a French dog. J

Monday, May 21, 2012

First off we want to thank all of the RAGOM volunteers who planned the Chuck and Don’s event on Roseville on Saturday. We really enjoyed the outdoor event! Also, special thanks to Devon TT for taking such nice pictures of our Foster boy, Duke!

During the event on Saturday we learned Duke might still have some hormones in him since he has a tendency to be more aggressive toward non-neutered or recently neutered male dogs. Duke barked at several of the other male dogs, and quite frankly was not showing his best side. We thought maybe we should go, but before we did Julie brought Littilin/Leo 08-608 over to meet Duke. Duke had no problems with Leo, tail wags only. We decided to stay, but keep our distance from the other male dogs. Duke barked at Handsome 12-160 and reacted to Fuzzy 12-181. Neither Handsome nor Fuzzy provoked Duke in any way; their only offence we suspect was they were recently neutered. We are hoping this is a passing phase; Duke’s hormones need to pass through his system which will take some time.

Cute things we love about Duke: When you ask him to sit on the wood or tile floor he slowly slides down into a laying position, because his slippery paws don’t have good grip on the wood floor. J

He has picked up a couple cute habits from our dog. When we come home from work we are greeted by two wiggle butts, both carrying stuffed toys with some shallow whining expressing their happiness we are home. The stuffed toys often end up going immediately out in the backyard, when we let them out. They also carry a stuffed toy and pace back and forth when they are ready to go out potty.

Duke is a great walker with a harness (he will pull too hard for a standard collar leash and make his own breathing too labored). We have not been able to work on “heel” with him during our walks yet, but with some obedience training he would be an even better walker than he is now. He sits at intersections when directed to and generally goes the pace of the walker, with the exception of needing to lead the walk out front.

Friday, May 18, 2012

If you are interested in meeting Mr. Duke, swing by Chuck and Don’s in Roseville this Saturday May 19th. We are planning to bring Duke to the event at 12:30PM and stay until 2PM. However, if you want to see Duke, plan to be there early. We have not taken him to an event before and we are unsure what he will think.

Since the last update we have learned Duke will react to other dogs who is not neutered. We have neighbors on one side of us with two unaltered dogs and Duke is very interest in running along the fence and barking at them, but we thought maybe it was because the dogs are also small. Sometimes our foster dogs are just not excited to have a small dog barking them. J We have learned to make sure the neighbor dogs are inside before we go outside.

Last weekend the neighbors on the other side of us had a visiting dog; another Golden Retriever. Duke started to bark and lunge at the fence. The visiting dog just looked at him like he was crazy. I took Duke in the house and then went back out to talk to the neighbor to see what they thought triggered Duke’s reaction and she told me her dog was not neutered.

We have not had problems meeting other dogs on walks. Not sure if the dogs we encounter on walks are neutered or if the difference is there is no fence between the dogs?? We will continue to observe Duke.

Come see Duke at his Chuck and Don’s debut! We will be there at 12:30…you are sure to receive kisses.

Saturday, May 12, 2012

Hey, Duke here. I just wanted to send special thanks out to the RAGOM volunteers who brought me all the way from South Dakota to Minnesota. Rona and Kathy I miss seeing you two, but really appreciate you visiting me and getting me groomed. According to Foster Mom, I am the first dog who came to her ready to go, whatever that means!

Kathy and Kris thanks for the fun car ride, on Sunday. I might need to convince Foster mom and dad to take me for another ride. I have been getting a lot of walks here, but I really like the car. My Foster parents keep saying, I am going to find my forever home quick, not only am I cute, but I am ready. What do they know? They keep calling me “Duke of Squirrel.” Why would they make a short name longer?

Anyway, thanks again Rona, Kathy, Kris and Happy Dogs Hideaway; for taking care of me and helping to get to my Foster home. So far so good! My Foster sister finally started to play with me, so I better run off and see where she is…let the games begin!

Friday, May 11, 2012

We wanted to report on how our week is going. Our resident dog Ally is no longer mad at us for having another dog in “her” house. She seemed to be enjoying play time with Duke. Duke seems to like Ally too. The last two days we have left Duke with Ally, both with free roam. They are both anxiously awaiting our arrival at the end of the day.

Duke’s breathing is less wheezy the last two days. Maybe we are whipping him in to shape again. I think his time in boarding, was short on exercise. J I have said this once, but I will say it again…this boy may be 6 years old, but he acts like he is 3.

By accident we discovered something. We think Duke may know more that he leads on. J We will explore more this weekend. We have discovered when we raise one arm and say “sit” he will sit if we raise both and say “sit” he will jump up on our chest. To test our theory we were doing just the hand/arm signals and he did the same thing. This smarty pants knows hand signals!!

If you are thinking about this boy let your placement advisor know…we may not be able to let him go, if you wait too long. Enjoy some pictures Duke and an video of Ally and Duke playing. Click here for the video.
