Hello RAGOM fans! Meet Clementine! She and her brother Tex were rescued from a shelter in Texas. Little did they know that when they were picked up by their personal chauffer/valet/rescuer, Miss Devon, they were going to be starring in their own little Rescue Roadtrip video diary!

While on vacation in the great state of Texas, Devon found Clementine and Tex among a litter of five puppies in the Collin County animal shelter. The shelter had rescued them after they got a call about someone threatening to shoot them. These little fur-butts suffered from one of the worst cases of flea infestation the staff had ever seen. There were clumps of flea dirt as big as a dime and their coats and skin were in poor shape.

Willing to risk that her car might become a “rolling flea circus” Devon and her resident, Chaz, picked up the pups and started the long journey north. Each stop along the way was documented and production values – pee and poop – were carefully observed. They visited OK and KS, and even met some new friends along the way before it was time to stop for the night. Because the hotel only allowed two pets per room, Clem snuck in inside a duffle bag! By midnight, thanks to the barking and unpredictable squat-and-pees, they were in danger of being invited to leave, but managed to make it through! After a restful (?) night and sincere apologies to the staff and fellow travelers, they were off to Iowa and their foster home.

We have learned that all the other puppies from this litter have been taken in by local rescues. RAGOM would like to thank Collin County Animal Services for taking such good care of these sweet pups and entrusting RAGOM with their future. And, a huge thank you to Devon for the fun videos and amazing photographs, but most importantly for getting these sweet kids on the road to a great life as RAGOM dogs!

We have some very sad news. This morning our little puppy Clementine passed away. She started having stomach problems on Dec 26, and had surgery on Dec 27. The vet found that her intestine was all bundled together, caused by her eating some of the entry mat by the patio door, and also getting some bites from her Frisbee. The carpet strands got tangled with the Frisbee plastic pieces resulting in a very sick puppy. She seemed to be well on the path to recovery, was in good spirits most of the week after surgery. But, early this morning she starting vomiting and died a few hours later. We loved her much, and miss her exuberance. We are still in shock that we have lost her. Please say a prayer for her as she takes up residence in Doggy Heaven.

Clementine was a great dog, we could not have asked for a better friend. She thoroughly enjoyed all her Christmas presents and having the family gathering for Christmas Dinner. She did not show any symptoms of illness until Dec. 26. Even with the pain she must have been in, she still managed to get extra energy when she greeted our vet. Tail wagging, loving the attention at the Vet’s office.

Devon and Trace, thanks so, so, so much for letting us have our too brief of time with her. Kristin, please give Tex (Leo) a hug for us from Clementine. I wish we had gotten them together.

Miss Clementine has a bunch of good news to share with her fans.

One of the highlights of her week was experiencing her first DQ kiddie cup!  What a treat!  Also, her latest bloodwork came back NORMAL!  Whoot!  Whoot!  Her white count was just where it should be, and she is a healthy (though she prefers “darling” as her primary descriptor) puppy.  She has also gained over 10 pounds since she was released from the hospital.  With that news in hand, we were able to schedule her sleepover at the vet for next week, and once that is complete she will be ready for her forever family!

In other news, she was smiling at me yesterday and guess what was missing? – A tooth!  Awwww.  She is waiting patiently for the tooth fairy to leave her a present.  I hear the fairy has a particularly hard time sneaking treats under the pillows of sleeping puppies without getting caught, so it may be a while…Best of all, Clem has a family coming to meet her!  She is so excited!  She is ready to show off her superior snuggling skills, her super sits, and her sweet personality and hope that her visitors just can’t leave without a little extra puppy baggage in the family truckster.

As she has started feeling better, she has joined in the golden fray.  As I sit here writing, there is a train of Golden’s racing up one set of steps on the deck, thundering by my chair, and leaping down the other set of stairs, across the yard, behind the bushes, and back again.  It’s like a pack version of the zoomies!  Of course Clementine -- with her little legs -- is the caboose, but a darn cute one!

Hi everyone!  It’s me, Clementine!  I am doing grrrrreat!

My white blood count is still a little high from when I was sick, but you would never know it.  I eat like a champion, all systems are go, and no more coughing!  Yay!  I think my nose is working especially well!  Check it out!

I do have one more quick stop to make at the vet to get my parts all fixed up, but then I will be ready for my forever family.  I don’t know why they are having such a hard time finding me, I’m right here!  While I’m waiting for them, I am busy doing all sorts of puppy business.   I eat.  I sleep.  I chew.  I snuggle. I explore.  In the picture you can see me an’ Tex getting ready to patrol foster mom’s bumper dandelion crop.  Don’t want any critters getting in there making a mess – aside from us of course!  FM says me an’ Tex are like a Fourth of July campfire… He is the fireworks show and I am the perfectly toasted marshmallow (ok, I added the “perfectly” part, but she did say the rest!).  So, if you are a melty-marshmallow-type person, maybe I’m your girl!

The other day, I heard a super-secret rumor from another fur-butt (I’m not at liberty to share his name, but I can tell you that it starts with an “M”, ends with a “Y” and has an “urph” in the middle).  Anyway, this fella told me that he knows some special peeps who were thinking warm thoughts about me – and I can tell you I am thinking warm thoughts right back!  Of course, I also want to send special shout-out to my angel Troy (I love a guy with wings!) and thank my fellow Texan for the pretty pink butterfly for my page!  I do love pink…. In fact, I thought I would look especially cute with a pink petunia in my hair so I got one off the deck and took it to FM so she could help me.  She must not think pink is my color, though, because she snatched it right away from me.  Geez, FM, would it hurt you to say “please”?  Maybe I will try the yellow ones next?!?

Miss Clementine is on the rebound! After a total of 12 days of inpatient care, Clem was released from the hospital on Tuesday with her Parvo infection in the rear-view mirror! Unfortunately, she is fighting newly diagnosed pneumonia as well as the kennel cough the rest of the pack contracted. However, the vets are hopeful that with a strong course of antibiotics and all the good thoughts and prayers that have been sent her way she is on the mend. Clementine is still frail, and very wobbly on her feet. Her ribs are visible, and her back and shoulders are bony. But, she is eating voraciously, and doing it four times a day!

Over the course of nearly two weeks at the clinic, Clementine lost two pounds. During the same time period Tex gained almost 10 – playing catch-up after a three months of poor nutrition. As you can see from the pictures, the result is obvious. Clem can virtually walk underneath him, he has gotten so tall. In addition, while her coat is still dull and sparse, his has filled in and is beginning to shine. Hopefully, two weeks from now I will be able to say the same for her!

A quick note from Clem: Hi everybody! I’m sending out huge puppy kisses and tail wags to Troy for helping pay my medical bills. I’m gonna rest up (as much as I can with Tex in the house) and get my strength back so when we meet someday so we can have our own personal snuggle session! In fact… Are you in the market for a puppy? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure we would be a great fit!

After many days of supportive care and stability, Clementine’s prognosis has worsened considerably. As of this morning, her blood proteins have dropped precipitously, the mild anemia the vets saw previously has worsened, and she is in some respiratory distress. We feel there is one more reasonable step we can take to give her a chance, and that is a plasma transfusion. That will be administered this afternoon. The concern is that she is fighting both the Parvo and the other illnesses that have struck the pack here since her arrival (non-bordetella kennel cough and possibly canine influenza). While she might have beaten one of them alone, together they are daunting, especially for a puppy who came in suffering from extreme neglect.

It is hard to know that despite doing everything “right” -- she was receiving significant and appropriate care almost before she was showing symptoms -- this terrible disease may kill her. Please send good thoughts and prayers her way that this last supportive measure will make the difference for her. She is such a sweet girl. It is awful to see her this way. Her eyes are sad.

Miss Clementine has now spent more nights in the isolation room at the vet than she has with her foster family. Our sweet girl has Parvo.

When she is healthy, this spunky little girl is the best of both words – a fantastic snuggler and ready to rumble when it is playtime. She loves to be right at my feet when we are out and about. So far, she has only tripped me once and thank goodness I managed to land on 75 lb resident dog Clyde instead of 16 lb Clem! While she isn’t potty trained, she is able to keep her crate clean all night long and pees immediately every time we take her outside. She is a smartie too. As soon as she sees the treat bag come out she is on her bottom ready for the good stuff!

Sadly, right now she isn’t healthy. She is unable to eat, lethargic, and infected with a highly contagious virus that vets are only able to treat supportively. While initially she was admitted at the vet hospital in better shape than her brother Tex, by yesterday, shortly after the above picture was taken, her condition had declined and she had to be placed on IV fluids in addition to receiving anti-nausea injections. She is also taking anti-diarrhea meds and is on powerful antibiotic which, while it won’t affect the course of Parvo, will help prevent her from getting a secondary bacterial infection. Despite the deadly nature of the disease, dogs who survive go on to live normal healthy lives. Our vets are hopeful this will be the case for Tex and Clementine. It is heartbreaking to see this special pup with barely the strength to lift her head, especially after all she has already overcome. Know this devastating disease can be avoided with timely vaccinations!

Please send good thoughts Clem’s way and keep on rooting for her to fight! If you can help with the cost of her care, visit www.ragom.org to make a donation.
