This handsome boy is Shrek! Thanks to one of our wonderful volunteers, the K. family, Shrek narrowly escaped being euthanized at a crowded humane society that didn't have enough room for him. Thank goodness they were able to save him and bring him in to RAGOM, because Shrek is such a lover!
The humane society estimated Shrek to be 6 years old, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's more like 3 or 4. We'll see what the vet has to say. Shrek will be neutered and brought up to date on all his vaccinations on Thursday 9/8. I am guessing he is about 60-65 lbs - he's not terribly big. He is just a beautiful boy and as he gets on a better diet, his coat is going to be just gorgeous. He's dark red in color and very fluffy! He looks bigger in his pictures than he is - in fact, he looks a bit chunky in his pictures, but I don't think he's overweight at all.
Shrek seems to be house trained as he has not had any accidents in the house. He was pretty nervous at first but he's starting to settle in. He gets along with other dogs but I'm not sure about cats yet. We haven't met any kids yet either, but Shrek can be a bit boisterous and he does NOT take treats gently (he'll need to work on that!) so I don't think young kids would be best for him. Shrek is fairly well behaved and knows some commands but will need to learn some better manners. He is VERY treat motivated though so I think he'll do well with some training and some patience. He walks pretty well on leash but I can tell he's never worn a gentle leader before - he has already scraped his nose a couple times trying to get it off (as you can see in some of the pictures)!
Shrek is just so darn sweet! He wants nothing more than to be loved, loved, loved! He is the definition of a velcro dog - in fact, I had some trouble getting pictures of him that didn't include my feet because he always wants to be so close to me! I'm not sure yet whether he needs to be in a home with other dogs, but I wouldn't be surprised if he would love to be the center of attention - someone's "one and only"!
I will write more as I get to know this guy better, but if you are interested in learning more about him, contact your placement advisor for more info!
