Happy Valentine's Day, Sweetie, in honor of Loki, our beautiful Golden girl that we lost one year ago today. We miss her soft white face and sweet spirit, and think of her when we see you! We can't wait to hear you've found a wonderful furr-ever home. Happy Valentine's Day. Sweetie, in honor of Loki, our beautiful Golden girl that we lost one year ago today. Whoever named this girl, picked the right name, she is the sweetest girl. Sweet Sweetie loves everyone. She met the other six dogs here (big and small) without a grumble. She wants only to be by your side and if you wanted to scratch her head all day long, she’d be more than happy to accommodate you.

Sweetie lived with her sister, Fancy 11-174, in a barn where she whelped a litter or two of puppies. She is thoroughly enjoying her new life as an indoor housepet. Sweetie visited the vet and other than an ear infection, urinary tract infection and being in season, she is a very healthy girl. We ran a CBC and Chem Panel (which is something we do for all dogs 8 years old and up) and everything came back in the normal range, which means that her bloodwork and internal organs are all normal and healthy. Sweetie is short in stature for a purebred Golden Retriever and could lose a few pounds. She weighed in at only 62 pounds, but 55 might be a more ideal weight for her. Due to her having a UTI and being in season, I am crating her when I go to work. She’s not excited to go into a kennel, but will follow treats in. Once in, she’ll lie down quietly after a few minutes. She does enjoy treats and we will find her first in line when we get the treats out.

Don’t let this girl’s age fool you. She has plenty of energy. I even found her jumped up on our kitchen bench enjoying the view out the window. Where is my camera when I need it? She was so cute. I don’t have cats, but Sweetie is such a gentle girl, I don’t think she would bother a cat. I also would trust her with kids since she doesn’t seem to have an aggressive bone in her body. I don’t think she needs another dog in her home, but would get along with any dog if you do have one. She also doesn’t run away. Someone came to our door and Sweetie had to say, hi, so quickly scooted out to meet them, but then came right back in when asked. Sweetie’s biggest priority for her new family will be people that love her and that want to give her all the attention that she so enjoys and deserves. I’d love to see her broaden her horizons getting to go on errands and walks and to explore the world. Sweetie may be a good candidate as a therapy dog since she is so sweet and gentle. It is with great sadness to report that we lost Sweety July 3, 2013. Her heart finally gave out. She had been slowing down over the last month but was only really sick for the last few days.

Even though Sweety was with us for only 41/2 months, she had tunneled her way into our hearts and brought so much joy to our lives. When we first met her at her foster home, she greeted us by burying her head into our legs like she loved us at first sight. When I  sat down on the floor to say hello, she plopped down beside me and put her head in my lap.  We thought she had picked us and we fell in love immediately. (Later we realized that she did this with every one she met if they would let her).  It happened over and over that people would say "What a sweet dog!  What is her name?"

The first night we brought her home from Sioux City our neighbors next door had made her a welcome home sign and taped it to our front door. Another friend had given us a stuffed yellow heart with the words "Too Sweet" across it. I offered her the stuffed heart and she gladly took in her mouth and was as happy as a clam. When I could get her toy away from her, I'd throw it down the hall and she'd run and get it and run back to me. That heart was her special toy and she always had it near her to take it outside or bring it up on the bed for cuddling.

Sweety's stuffed toys came in handy when we would take her out side to do her business. We would walk a block or two, and then she would just stop in the middle of the street and wouldn't move in any direction . We would pull one of her favorite stuffed toys out of our pocket and throw it in the direction toward home, and she'd go grab it, take off and book it home - sometimes galloping!

Sweety just loved to roll on her back in the snow. I'd take her outside and all of a sudden she'd dive roll close to my feet and roll and roll on her back. She had such a happy face and would look over at me with her front paws tucked in front of her, as if she was saying "don't I look cute?"  Sweety took rolling on her back to a whole another level. And she didn't hesitate to try rolling on our neighbors snow as well. As the snow was disappearing she'd find the only patch left and roll to her heart's content.

We learned from experience the answer to the home visit question: "What would you do if you found your dog up on the table?" One night I was working on the computer and Sweety was out in the living room on the couch sleeping. I heard some soft barks coming from the living room. I had never heard her bark before and walked into the dining room and she was standing on the dining room table looking at me. I was so shocked I ran to get my phone to get a picture of her. It was as if she was saying, "I got up here just fine, but now could you help me get down?!"  She never did get back up on the table.

Sweety was quite a persistent counter surfer. One of the first times we left her alone, we came home and found two cartons of chicken broth all over the rug. I thought we had dog proofed pretty well. She definitely had that quiet, sneaky Golden way of slipping into the kitchen when we were busy. She had no problem getting her front paws up on the counters.

Sweety was with one of us everywhere we went in the house. In the kitchen, she would lay down on the floor right on my feet, and each time we'd move over a few feet, she'd follow us around the island!

Sweety loved going for car rides. When we'd take her outside, if we stopped at the car for even a second, she thought she was going for a ride and would sit down instead of going for a walk. One time she sat down beside the car, holding out for the ride. I decided to drop the leash and walk down the driveway to encourage her to come. No luck, she just sat there watching me walk away. So I crossed behind the car and into the yard so she couldn't see me. I looked back and she was leaning out , stretching her head around the corner of the car so she could see me again. I took a few more steps so she couldn't see me. Then she crouched down and peeked under the car to keep her eye on me! Finally she got up, took two steps out to a spot behind the car and sat back down as if to say, go ahead and take a walk, I can see you all the way down the street now. I'll just wait here.

Another thing she loved was going to garage sales. She would stay there all day, greeting people, especially the babies. One time we had to have the mother bring the baby in the carrier out to the car so we could get Sweety to come out to the car to go home.

Sweety was such a gift and a joy. She loved to cuddle and would be jealous if one of our cats was getting any of "her" attention. She was very happy here and loved every one she met. She really was the "sweetest" Golden girl. We miss her sweet, quiet spirit/presence and soul. Although Sweety left us way too soon, the three of us knew we were family and she had found her forever home.

Thank you to all the families and volunteers that transported, fostered and loved her until she made her way to us. Jan and Laurie

Sweety had an exciting time at Christmas. We had three family dogs visit. She fit in well with that pack. She was also the subject of my son’s photography. Then after Christmas she went to the groomer to get beautiful.

We are enjoying winter in South Dakota with many walks in the woods. After five inches of light, fluffy snow we were the first ones to walk the trails and the dogs loved it. They sniff it and roll in it and make snow angels. This weekend’s frigid temperatures were nothing. Sweety walked for almost two hours in the woods keeping pace with 4 year old Bella, as they explored the woods from one end of the park to the other. Then she got to go to a friend’s house to watch the Packers lose to the 49ers.

Rain, snow and even cold ---nothing keeps us from going out for our hikes in the woods. Sweety is very good at following or walking beside me.

Well it’s been awhile since you’ve been updated on Sweety. She’s been busy. She had a little minor surgery to have a skin tag removed and rule out anything serious. Her blood work at that time indicated that her special diet is keeping her kidneys healthy and also keeping her happy and enjoying life.

She had her picture taken with Santa at the Paws for RAGOM Santa and Pet Photo shoot. That resulted in some really great shots of her.

Meanwhile she has become more and more playful with the three year old resident dog. They also spend the day together while I work. Each night when I return home, Sweety is the first to greet me at the door. She enjoys walks whether it’s around the neighborhood, in the woods or on the soccer fields. Yesterday, we even had snow to make the whole outing more fun. Sweety did her happy wiggly roll on her back in the snow.

Sweety’s a pretty easygoing dog who loves to be petted, brushed, and get her tummy rubbed. She has this very gentle way of touching you with her paw not in a pawing, demanding way---just a light touch. It’s another of her endearing qualities.

Sweety enjoyed attending Woofstock and Howlaween this past month. As you can see, she was a gnome and enjoyed all the visitors to the RAGOM booth.

Back at home, she continues to get along well with Bella. They spend time together, take walks together and nap together. Sweety is small and has a really cute face. Besides looks, she has a personality you can't resist.

Funny and sweet, she would love to be your companion.

Hi, I’m Sweety’s foster mom and I’ve spent about 3 weeks getting to know her. She’s 10 years old but you’d never know it. Last weekend she walked 7 miles around our lake with my 3 year old Golden and I. She plays tug of war with her over stuffed animals and is a great traveler having made two long trips to Wisconsin since she came to stay with us. She is quiet and follows you around. She can be a great lapdog as I found out today when I was sick and she sat beside me on the sofa. Best of all, she’s ready to go with you or do whatever you want to do. She’s a great companion and gets along well with other dogs.

At first, Sweety didn’t play with my dog. It’s been so rewarding to see her open up and begin to play. The few times she has barked were in joy as she wiggled on the ground or took off chasing after Bella. She would love to be your companion on walks, warm your bed or lap and make you laugh at her playful antics.

Come meet Sweety at Woofstock in Sioux Falls, SD on Sunday, October 14 outside Spencer Park.

Sweety arrived here in Sioux Falls a few days ago and is settling in as you can see from her picture. Her previous fosters felt they had too many dogs and once her health improved they felt she’d be better off where she could get more attention. She has a lot of energy for an older dog and is very playful with me, retrieving stuffed animals and squeaky toys. She is small and currently overweight but her fosters are working at getting her weight down, and she is strong. She’s a little tank. She’s a happy dog and very, very affectionate. She likes to sleep with her head in your lap. She will roll on her back, wiggle around with her paws up, smile and let out a happy little bark. Otherwise she is very quiet. She would be a great companion dog for someone who has time to lavish attention on this sweet dog.

Sweety is doing great! Here are photos of her having good times--munching on a twist of rawhide; in the middle of a lovefest; and, sharing a quiet moment with the neighbor boy.

As promised, I've posted a small photo collection of Sweety doing what she knows best -- having fun and feelin' good rolling in the grass on her back. Sweety has really perked up since she first came back to RAGOM Land and became our foster four weeks ago. You certainly wouldn't know this little girl was sick -- we are keeping all paws crossed for a good report at the vet on her kidney values in a couple of weeks.

She is not timid about much of anything. She hogs for attention with the other dogs, and cannot be trusted with any tasty food within reach. She seems to have selective hearing if she wants to do something that we don't want her to do. We say this lovingly, as it is encouraging to see her feeling her oats. We have learned that she is a strong dog, too. Despite her weight, she is able to jump up onto our bed. She also bulldozes her way through a barricade of two ladders and four heavy patio chairs that we put up to keep the dogs away from the kitchen contractors.

Sweety has many friends and family who have shown they care for her deeply. Her own sister, Fancy, came with her adoptive parents, Dave and Patti Tritch, to the Duluth Petco to visit her last Saturday during the RAGOM Meet & Greet (see photo -- don't they look alike?). The Tritch Family has generously sponsored Sweety! And, an anonymous Goldzilla Friend made a donation to RAGOM on Sweety's behalf! Thank you so much, Dave & Patti and to the anonymous donor, for showing your love through a donation.

Sweety’s energy has begun perking up. Perhaps it is due to her new prescription food. She was hunting for chipmunks under the deck tonight. Sweety joins the rest of the pack on twice daily long walks in the woods. She is generally right behind Foster Dad or me, but at least she is truckin’. She loves, loves, loves to go swimming! She, more than the other dogs, will take the time to just tread water and bob around, enjoying the cool water.

Sweety is fond of one of our other fosters, Bobby 12-247, and will often be found next to him. Tonite she parked her head by his tail while I brushed Bobby. I've included a couple of photos of the pair, from last month's Duluth Petco RAGOM Meet & Greet.

Sweety amuses us when we often find her on her back in the grass doing a full body wiggle with a funny smile on her face. I am taking photos and will share a collection of her doing this next week, but this week I have something else to share. When my husband and I began birding, we learned how to identify the birds not so much by their size and color, as by the particular types of physical movements and flight routines. Similarly, when our son was a baby, he would stick his tongue out the side of his mouth when he was concentrating on doing something, and sure enough, when Foster Dad vacuums, he also sticks his tongue out the side of his mouth (two peas in a pod)! Long way of saying, with all the photos I’ve been taking of Sweety, I keep getting ones with her tongue sticking out. Guess her tongue is a big part of how she expresses herself. So, this week I am sharing photos of our dear girl, Sweety, and her tongue!

Sweety was recently returned to RAGOM, due to medical issues in her adoptive family, who loved her very much. We would like to thank her family for having her vaccinations updated and giving Sweety a fresh grooming, in preparation for her return. Thanks also to the Transport Team, Steve L. and Becky R., for bringing her to us. True to her name, when Sweety arrived at our home, she was as quiet, innocent and sweet as they come – a total lovebug. We arranged to get her into the vet as soon as possible, to try to determine why she had been having incontinence issues at her adoptive home.

Although heavier than she should be, everything checked out great, until her bloodwork tests came back. Sweety has progressive kidney disease. There is no way to regenerate the diseased parts of the kidneys. The goal now is to slow the deterioration of her remaining kidney functions through a special prescription dog food. After thirty days, the vet will recheck her blood for kidney function and hopefully the process will have slowed. The vet said the condition of Sweety’s kidneys are likely due to the aging process, whereby her kidneys are her weakest organ and the first to go.

While this is very sad news, the vet said Sweety is not in pain. She is enjoying herself here, loves to roll on her back in the grass, stay cool in the basement with the rest of the pack while Foster Mom quilts, run on the beach, and enjoy the companionship of her foster brothers and sisters. As her foster parents, we were hit pretty hard with the news, but realize that part of our job is to be there for RAGOM dogs, even when the going is tough. We will keep you posted on her health, and in the meantime, we hope you enjoy the photos of her sweet self.
