Shadow is currently away at training camp, but no worries! He'll be back in early January to rejoin the GReat Golden family. We miss him a lot but we're so excited to see the new pup that comes home.

Buddy is a PB Golden Retriever between one and two years old. He was neutered last Thursday and is UTD. Not much is known about him. He followed a girl home from school one day and they had him for two weeks and no one came looking for him, they had him scanned for a microchip but none was found. They were going to keep him but he has to much energy for their seven year old lab so he became a RAGOM dog.
I have only had him a few days, he came from a temp foster (thanks Sue) and now is with his new fur brothers and a bird and cats. This is what I know so far.
He is about 65lbs but needs to fill out. I think he will be closer to 75 when he is done growing. He has a beautiful blonde coat and loves to be brushed. He has a very soft mouth and will give up bones, toys or what ever he has. He loves to retrieve and loves to be outside. He will lay on the steps for hours just watching the deer through the fence. If you try to take him by the collar and direct him in a direction he will shut down and lay belly up. He knows how to slip a buckle collar. The GS also noted this behavior. Somewhere in his past I believe has been abused but he can't tell us. So I don't grab for his collar but just direct his whole body and that seems to work. He will bolt out the door or his kennel or the car so I am working on teaching him to wait. He is smart and wants to please. Because of this behavior he will require a physical fence. I think that is how he got lost perhaps slipping his collar and bolting.
At this time what he will require is:
A physical fence.
No children under ten as he is a big pup at heart and still jumps up and will mouth your sleeve.
Exercise in the form of walks or jogging.
Patience when teaching him the boundaries using a very soft touch.
No cats at this time as he is way to fixated on them and hard to redirect. I am working on that with him.
Obedience classes.
He gets along fine with other dogs but does play rough so another very playful dog or he would be fine by himself if he is not left alone for more then a few hours.
He is young and has a lot to learn and get over from his past but he is a beauty in and out. You can just tell he is a gentle boy but until he gets a few years on him he will require lots of encouagement and positive reinforcement.

Hi! Just wanted to give an update on how our new pup is getting along at his home!
Shadow is the ideal dog for our family! He is crazy, but can be mellow. He's still a beauty and he loves to cuddle with us. At night, when Mom settles down to watch her favorite TV shows, Shadow jumps onto the couch and lays down right next to her, while our older RAGOM girl sits in front of the TV, rapt with attention. Funniest thing ever!
Shadow is doing great here, and we are getting him into obedience classes and agility, because he really is such a smart dog. He loves to go swimming, as we discovered at the cabin last weekend, but he won't come back unless Dad went out in the kayak and guided him back to land. He loves to explore. He still has no health problems.
Shadow is a wonderful dog, and we all feel so blessed to have him be a part of our family. We needed a young, rowdy Golden kid to remind us all how great life can be! I'll post another update in a few months!

Shadow/Buddy is settling in and is starting to feel right at home. He continues to learn how to play and be respectful of his fur brothers. He has gotten much better with the cats. Sometimes he will totally ignore and sometimes he will try and play. The weather has been so cold that walking has been impossible so he is now acclimated to the treadmill and each morning and evening will get on for ten minutes at 2.4 miles per hour. He took to it right away and will get on and wait for it to turn on. I think these dogs think it is a ride just like us going to the fair. He can't get enough of cuddle time on the couch and is a real love bug.
As you can see he loves to play with his fur brothers.

Buddy has made steady progress at his foster home. He and my resident dogs are figuring each other out. Buddy is such a puppy and always looking for one of them to play. When either resident dog has had enough ....Shadow/Buddy will back right off. He is always a very submissive pup to the other dogs. He goes right into his crate at night and not a peep out of him. He is getting used to his gentle leader and loves his pack walks. He has now learned to pretty much ignore the cockatiel and we are working with him to learn to ignore the cats. This is a work in progress. It has only been a couple of weeks so we are pleased with his progress. He has a very soft mouth. When ever you play ball with him he not only brings it back but holds on to it so gently you can easily take it from him. He is learning his manners and sits and waits before he eats and before he goes in or out of the car. He loves all people and dogs. Takes treats gently from your hand.
He is very young and has lots of energy. I find when I am home all day with him he is much more relaxed. He loves to lay in the kitchen when I make meals. You must be careful not to step on him because he is right there. He knows his name Shadow and responds every time.

Buddy was a stray when he came to us and did not know his name so I started calling names to him and guess what when I hit on Shadow (because he follows me everywhere) it stuck. He looked up at me like "oh, that's me!" ....so the beauty is now Shadow like the Golden Retriever from the classic movie Homeward Bound.
Shadow has been doing great. He is totally housebroken will go to the door and whine to go out. He likes to go out as far in the yard as he can to do his business. He has a spirit about him that everyone is his friend and every dog needs to be played with. He thinks the same of the cats, he is getting better but will chase them if given a chance. I think a home without cats would be best. He might get better with age as I am thinking he is closer to one year old then two. He is like a big puppy. When he wants to jump up on you if you give him the off command with your hand his paws won't touch you but he will stay up on his back legs and do a backwards dance. I try not to laugh as not to encourage him but it is pretty funny. When he was neutered they also did a X-ray of his hips and said they are good. (maybe that is why he can dance so well) When he goes outside to play he hits the fast button and is off but when he comes in the house he is so calm and gentle it really is amazing. He loves to be brushed and then jump on the couch and lay across your lap....he is a big puppy. He rides well in the car and jumps right in his crate to go. He sleeps in his crate next to his fur brothers in the bedroom and will now walk right in because he knows a piece of cheese will follow, I leave a bone in there with him and he chews some then right off to bed and sleeps all night. He is walking pretty good now on his gentle leader. He no longer lays down when you reach for his collar. The last couple of days with the cold weather and my extended work hours he has been going to day care and has found a couple of labs that have his high energy for play and is quite a hit with all the caregivers.
This is what I see for him now.
Someone who is home for most of the day.
He does not need another dog. If he has a fur sibling they need to be high energy or he will be just like a little puppy and not leave the lower energy dog alone.
He is so smart I really think he should be in obedience or agility....something because he is such a great dog it would be a shame for him not to be out and be a great ambassador for the rescue golden.
Fence but I think he would be fine with an invisible fence as he is wanting to stay around me more. (remember he is a stray with an unknown background, was in a GS home for a couple weeks, then to a temporary foster for a week, then to my home so he is just starting to feel settled)
He has a "golden temperament" everything you always read about, kind,sweet, loving and he will be gentle once he gets through his adolescence.
