We welcomed Simba into the RAGOM family on Sunday so I am still getting to know him. He is up to date now on his shots and is heart worm negative. There are some concerns with an infection under his right ear and jaw line. Hope to get the biopsy results in the next few days and will report back when I hear. Until I am sure of his health status, I am going to show him as unavailable.

 

Simba is a tall boy and a bit underweight at 76 lbs. He loves his chow and happily will eat any food or treats that is offered. He loves his limited ingredient kibble, bananas, salmon and green beans.

He is a great car rider. He sits very attentively in the back seat and keeps his eye on the road. He likes his walks and walks nicely with his FB Murphy. I've been walking him on a flat colar and he doesn't pull too badly. Simba responds really quickly to all the basic commands.

In the mean time, please send good vibes for this sweet senior boy. He just wants to feel safe and loved right now.

Hey Simba fans, it has been a while since Simba has been on the RAGOM web page.  We want to share  Simba's  Golden story and our happy ending.

Simba came to stay with us as a foster during Labor Day weekend 2011.  After three weeks we knew this guy was meant to share our lives.  We adopted him.   Bringing him to share our lives and home has made us all happier.

Simba is a Senior dog who is somewhere around 11 years old.  We are mature adults  so find our energy levels are really well matched.  He likes to walk a little, we like to walk a little.  He likes to hang out in the house or in the yard.  We do too.  He is very treat motivated, us too.  If we are away for a few hours, Mr. Simba is fine hanging out on his favorite doggie bed and chilling until we arrive.

Simba came to us after being adopted two times and returned two times within one month.  The problem was his dog aggression.  With no other dogs in our house and experience with dogs who did not love dogs, we have had no problems.  Yes, he does go crazy barking and pulling when he sees other dogs.  Showing him a treat and refocusing his energy usually does the trick in changing the experience when we encounter other dogs on our walks.  He has gotten used to our next door neighbors two dogs.  They have loud conversations through the fence and it all works out.

We already had two cats.  Simba has blended into that pack.  Of course he is the king of the jungle and thinks he is boss.  They are more patient than Simba  and not afraid to swat his nose if he forgets his manners.  One of the cats accompanies us on walks around the block regularly.  That is a treat we all like  We all sleep in the same room at night.  Simba has integrated wonderfully into our pack.

Also Simba has excellent doggie manners.  From day one he had free roam of the house.  He has had no accidents.   Simba does not beg, stays away from the garbage, is not destructive.  He knows how to sit, do down, high five and stay.  He is extremely loving and grateful to have a forever home where he is loved and appreciated.

His health is good.  Even though he has some arthritis he walks every day and navigates stairs.

We submitted his picture for a contest on most beautiful Senior. Dog.  Our king of the jungle Simba was a finalist.  Looking at the photos you see why.

Mr. Simba, King of the Jungle, is going to his forever home today!  Simba has met his perfect match in Wendy!  Wendy has 2 other dogs that Simba has had the opportunity of getting to know a little bit and it has gone well. It seems to be a very good mix.   Both of the current dogs are females---perhaps Simba will enjoy being the only male....AKA Mr. Stud!   I am so thankful for Wendy! She really seems to understand Simba and his need for a calm home with a patient owner.  Wendy also has a calming voice and loves to talk to her pets----Simba absolutely loves to be talked to!

I can't tell you how much Simba has come to mellow and accept new situations during the last 2 months.  I think it really helped being home on daily basis.  (I am off for the summers)  He now warms up to new situations and people quickly! 

If I have learned anything with Simba, it is that often times anything  is possible especially with a little love, time and patience!  Who would have thought....Simba going to a home with 2 other dogs! WOW!!!    I am so excited for Simba and his new family--- I will miss him!

Hey all----Simba and I have been taking it pretty easy with this heat.  Simba had a little "hot spot" that was taken care of nicely by the fine vets at Golden Valley VCA - All About Pets. 

Simba is a very handsome, wonderful boy!  He LOVES it when you talk to him and tell him how handsome he is!  Simba would be a wonderful companion for someone that has a relatively quiet home with no other dogs.  Older children would be best...or perhaps a very controlled introduction to young children may work.  Simba seems to do well in situations that he is given the opportunity/time to get use to.  Initially, new situations are a bit stressful for him.  Once Simba is given the time and attention needed he will get to know you and love you and your family unconditionally!

 Simba and I were recently at Ollu Dog Wash-Simba was getting a little buff and shine.  Each time a new pupper came in for a bath, Simba would bark and bark as if to say, "Hello, hello, hello,- the water is fine- there is nothing to worry about- this actually feels good!"  Simba is a vocal dog, but once he is used to the situation, he settles down. Simba loves to get out on short walks to sniff around---that's his favorite past time---I think we should change his name to Mr. Sniffer!  And by the way----he still loves his Kong!!!!

"FINALLY....," Simba says, "FINALLY!"  Spring has arrived...or has it?  Simba was sure enjoying a few wonderful days this past week.   Simba is doing great!  He is now on Rimadyl 2 times per day---he is much more comfortable and more active.  It is amazing how Simba and I are bonding...Yes, he was a bit cranky, but now there is an understanding between us.  I only wish that someone would take the opportunity to get to know Simba like I have come to know him----a beautiful, loyal, easy going dog.  He will love you unconditionally; he is my shadow in the house!  He could be your subtle shadow too! 

Simba loves to be talked to..especially on his walks!  He loves to be told he is such a good boy!  He keeps right up with me then, instead of wanting to sniff everything.  He  is learning that there is a time for sniffs and a time for our walks...a.k.a. walk-walks!! 

The other night I woke up to Simba's slow, low howl!!!  There was a siren in the distance!  He was joining in----it was one of the neatest things; I couldn't help but laugh till my bed shook!  I loved it!

Simba would do best in a quiet home, being the only dog.  He does well with my cat; he could do well with your cat too!  He is not a runner, but he does need to be watched if he is not in a fenced area.  He will slowly sniff himself to brand new areas!  I can't tell you the love I feel for the crabby, old guy and how much he has come to mean to me!  Wouldn't you love to get to know him?  As he learns to trust you, he will love you too!

Hi everyone! 

Just wanted to check in with my buddy Simba...Simba and Calvin the cat were just hanging out, waiting for the rain or storm on this wierd weather Sunday!  Also, Simba is having a visitor today!  Someone is interested in my buddy! By the way, Simba is doing great.  Since the nice weather I have learned that Simba likes to "talk" to motorcycles!  He barks when he hears them!   He also is interested in the raccoon that lives across the street from me in the nature like - park area.  They said good morning to each other just the other day...with a little growl and squeel!  ; Simba was not faized in the least...he just continued on with his morning sniffs!  Simba is such a beautiful, easy going dog; he would do well with a mello lay back family! 

Please consider him, he deserves a great forever family!

I know, you are wondering---"What has happened to Simba?"  Unfortunately Simba's ear infection did come back and the decision was made to have a total ear canal removal--which is a pretty extensive surgery-Thank You to everyone/volunteers involved! (Inver Grove Animal Hospital and the wonderful Dr. R. ) Simba is recovering wonderfully-It has been 3 weeks since the surgery and he has some new behavior traits!  I bet he had some pain down deep that is now probably gone.  He seems more up-beat and follows me everywhere!  He even seems a bit frisky at times.  Running/trotting up to greet me, barking when I come in the door.   As I come in the door, he looks for something to bring to me.  He loves to toss his kong at me to throw back at him.  He even comes upstairs to sleep by my bed sometimes!   He really enjoys his walks and his sniffs around the neighborhood.   He can still be kind of snarky with other dogs on our walk; and still is not too fond of younger children and their quick movements.  However, Simba would be a great watch dog!  He will definitely let you know when someone is passing by the house.   PLUS--Simba loves, loves, loves car rides!  He would be a great traveling partner!  He would be a loyal companion to anyone that is willing to put some time in getting to know him....He is a very sweet boy!

WOW!!!!  Here we are again....Finally! Simba has a new foster home.  I have been getting to know him for over a month now.  Simba is a great boy!  He does well with my cat, they have negotiated their relationship and have come to a very good place.  At first Simba was unsure what to think, then he got very inquisitive, now they nose around with each other!

I do think that Simba would do best in a quiet home, being an only dog.  When we take our walks, he whines and barks at the other dogs, wagging his tail, almost like he wants to play.  A friend of mine came over with her dog the other day (Milo, my test dog--check out happy endings:  07-537)  I was curious to see the interaction...They sniffed each other  a few times, then Simba got a little aggresive and gave him a couple of snaps!  Boy, was Milo surprised!  I am not sure if it was a "his" space issue or what.  I will do a bit more investigating and let you know.

Simba seems to do well with older kids...11 or so and up.  I think little kids, with their toys and the noises they may kind of adgitate him. He got a bit snarley when an 8 year old boy sat next to him and was playing with his cars-making vrooom noises.  Simba is 10 years old!!  I can think of many older men that may be bothered by that!

Simba is a wonderful, beautiful, simple, easy dog!  He has had no accidents in the house and he is left with free roam for up to 10 hours.  He loves his walks and does really well on the gentle leader.  If he is on a regular collar with a leash he likes to take his sweet time, but he seems to be a whole different boy on his gentle leader....Hmmmm,  I wonder what  that means? Simba does well and listens when he is off leash.  He love to be over in the wood-like area across the street from my house and sniff away.   He lays right by my feet now, chewing his marrow bone.  He loves them, along with his kong---treats or no treats!  It's almost like his binky.

 

If you are looking for a loving, furry, companion, that is so very easy to live with, with little demands----SIMBA IS YOUR MAN!

Simba is doing well and responding to his medicine for his infected ear. His ear is looking so good and it is clear Simba is just feeling better. The whining that he was continually doing the first couple of days has stopped. Clearly the poor guy was in such pain. The infection was so severe that it is taking several weeks of antibiotics, ear drops and steroids to kill the different bacteria and get the swelling to go down to open up his ear canal. He’s taking the meds like a trooper (putting a little cheese with it doesn’t hurt either). He’s got about 3 more weeks of meds to complete before the doctor will decide if a procedure is needed to open up his ear canal. Keep your fingers crossed.

Simba continues to adjust to home life with another dog. He and FB Murphy continue to negotiate space and resources. I continually see Simba getting more and more comfortable with this as I’m pretty sure this is all new to him. He’s used to be an only dog and loves human attention although he does pretty well in sharing that with FB.

As I mentioned before I think that at this time Simba would do best as an only dog. Another big dog (no little dogs) in the house could be ok if they are willing to give Simba his space in the beginning and you are willing to work with him to teach him proper dog etiquette in your house. He needs slow introductions in meeting new dogs. I will continue to expose and work with him to be more comfortable around new and unfamiliar dogs.

Simba is a sweet senior boy. He’s a great car rider, loves walks, very good with a gentle leader, is not a runner, has great recall and obeys basic commands very quickly and just wants to be with you. Simba loves his chow time and is very treat motivated. As you can see, Simba is quite a tall beautiful boy.

Great news about Simba! The lab did not find any cancer underneath his infection under his right ear and jaw line. Whew! I am so happy and I believe Simba is on his way to being a healthy dog again. They found 3 different types of infections and for the last week he has been taking antibiotics that can tackle two of them. The 3rd one is resistant so we will be changing his meds today and hopefully we will see them all gone soon. His ear is looking much better already but may have to have a procedure done on his ear canal to open it up again due to the severity of the infection. Once he is done with his medication (at least a couple of more weeks) the good doctor will assess the situation at that time.

A little background on Simba: He had been in the same family since he was a puppy and was given up through no fault of his own; it was because of divorce and financial reasons. Simba is ten years old and his birthday is Jan 10, 2000. He has been an only dog his whole life so he is adjusting to so many things this last week, one being with another dog. Simba did not have to learn to share and he is learning that now. At this time I would say he would do best being an only dog, but I have seen a lot of progress in his comfort around my resident dog in the house and sharing resources. Simba is a very good boy and really wants to please, so he his motivated by his love for his human(s) to do the right thing. He knows all the basic commands and responds very quickly to a request. So far, he has been very receptive to the new routine and new house rules. He follows me around the house. He’s not a velcro dog, but definitely likes to be near me. Simba does not seem to be a runner so I think he could go to a home with or without a fence. He would just need to be walked almost daily to get out for some exercise and some good sniffs.

Simba has not had one accident in the house so I think it's safe to say he is completely house trained. Also, he does not chew on anything.  I will test him with toys once he gets more comfortable with my resident dog and learns how to share better. I don't have a cat, so I can do that if need be for his future home. So far he does not show a big prey drive on our walks.

Some other things I have learned or know about Simba—he doesn’t like motor cycles or scooters! He howls and barks if they go by. At my house, this is not a huge problem—he only sees them if we are out on a walk. I got a glimse of Simba when the door bells rings with the trick or treaters coming to the door last night. He does bark and he got very excited to greet the kids. To keep him calm and safe, it was best to put him in the kitchen behind the babygate! He is very respectful of babygates too!

Simba is a beautiful, tall blond boy and looks to be healthy once we clear up his infection and he is consistently on high quality food. He loves his chow time and really seems to show great appreciation for the steady and scheduled meal times.
