Hello, meet Rocky!  This is the first update, and...so far, so good.  Our resident pups were a little snarky with him at first, but are now warming up to him.  We're currently working on his counter surfing, jumping up on people and how he aggressively grabs treats.  He has made tremendous progress in the 2 days we've had him, and he is all around a very good listener so far.  He wasn't excited about sleeping in the crate the first night, but settled down eventually and went to sleep.  I don't think it will be a continual problem.  He's also doing very well on our initial rollerblading trips.  He's definitely a happy doggy and loves to cuddle.  He's eating good and hasn't had any accidents in our house.  More to come!

Updates

Hello,

I am Rocky’s mom and this update is way past due!  We have had Rocky for three years, and in two days he will turn eleven!  Although he looks like an old guy with white circles around his eyes, he is very healthy and very active and no one can believe he is as old as he is.  In fact, Rocky is my fourth Golden Retriever and he has outlived all of the others.  He loves his walks (trotting the whole two miles), playing with his squeakers and tossing them in the air, chewing on his bones. . . and he always reminds me about his evening treat of peanut butter spread inside his bone!

We live in Albany, NY now and Rocky was a real trooper riding in my car 1500 miles.  But he has acclimated well and we ADORE him!!!  We can’t imagine life without him.  He loves his 93-year old grandma and remains very quiet until she gets up in the morning.  Then he greets her with his excited chatter, runs around and begins squeaking his tennis balls.  He also has made dog friends!

His seizure disorder is very well controlled with Phenobarbital and Potassium Bromide. He has had about 10 seizures in the three years we have had him, most in the first few months with us and none this past year. So he is very well controlled with medication. . . and he also leads a pretty laid-back life!

I am so grateful to RAGOM for giving us Rocky!  He absolutely lights up our home and lives!!   THANK YOU!!

I am Rocky’s new mom.  I adopted Rocky on Nov 20, 2011, so he has been with us for just over month and WE LOVE HIM!  I know he was fostered for quite a long time without too much interest shown in him for adoption – and I can only think it was because of his epilepsy, because he is a wonderful dog.  He was beautifully cared for and when he had his first appointment with my vet, she was impressed by what good shape he was in, and how much time and effort had been put into finding the right dosage of anti-seizure medication.  He has had a few seizures since coming to us, but they last only a few minutes, and he is back to himself as soon as they are over.

Rocky now lives in South Minneapolis with his new mom and his 90 year-old grandma, who he loves!  While he was a little anxious his first several days with us, not sure of us, much less our routines and activities, he has completely settled into his new home now, as you can see by the photos!   He loves to run in the fenced-in backyard, protecting his territory from rabbits and birds!  He also loves to take walks on city blocks and in parks, and does especially well with the Gentle Leader.  He does get anxious and sometimes aggressive around other dogs, so we avoid them.  Sometime soon I will contact a trainer to help us with that behavior.

He plays with his toys, loves to squeak and squeak and squeak his Kong tennis ball and bowling pin, carries his red Kong in his mouth hoping for more peanut butter, chews for long periods of time on heavy duty Nylabones, cuddles with his mom and grandma on the couch, keeps watch of the neighborhood on his bench at the front window, and “talks” regularly.  My mother calls him a “rascal” and we love his sense of humor!

We could not be happier!  We adore this dog and he has added so much to our home!  We were waiting for him! Thank you, RAGOM for caring for Rocky until we could find him!!   Judy

Hello!  Wow!  Winter already?!

We've been busy with back to school around here and let's just say, Rocky had a hard time with the transition. When I started back to school, he was only home alone for about 3 hours, max. But, I (his MOM) was gone for about 7 hours total. He did not take this well and after 3-4 days he had a seizure. But, he is used to the transition now!

I've also noticed something really adorable about him...I'm not sure if this is due to his maturing age, the cooler weather or both (I'm thinking a combination of both!), but he has recently started to sleep on the couch and/or recliner. We have had Rocky for almost 2 years and he has NEVER jumped up on the couch ON HIS OWN to lay and take a nap. Well, for the past 2-3 weeks I find him up there often. But, funny enough, only in the 2 spots
I sit :) He gets up when I tell him to move...and he usually moves to the other piece of furniture. :)

He's also still doing well with our now 6 month old daughter! He knows which toys are hers and leaves them lay on the floor. As I'm writing this update, she's rolling around on the floor by the dogs, pulling his tail and kicking his feet. He just lazily watched her for a few minutes, then when he had enough, he slowly and calmly got up and moved. She is ENAMORED by both dogs and while he's good with her, I can't say the feeling is exactly
mutual!

He really is a gem and by FAR one of the easiest dogs we've ever had.

Hi everyone!

I'm just taking a quick second to update, it's been a busy summer around here! FM has been busy with the garden...Which has also become a favorite activity of mine! When I see the big red bowl, I know we're going out to the garden! There are two great things about that: 1. FM always gives me one or two things right from the garden. 2. When FM processes the stuff in the kitchen, she bends down to let me clean out the bowl. She understands I'm becoming a sweet old, gentle guy who likes to relax. She also thought it was funny when I tried to catch a fly...while I was laying down. I like to rest and FM thinks it's endearing (most of the time) when she has to give me a few seconds head start to get up and start up the stairs. Ahh....the life of a senior golden! How sweet it is!

I just had to send in this new picture! Whenever Rocky sees me put on my tennis shoes (which is RARE-I LOVE my sandals!) OR the baby carrier/backpack, he gets SOOOO excited! He has learned that both of these things mean we're going for a walk! Apparently, today he REALLY needed to make sure I knew he wanted to go for a walk too! He came running over all excited to the couch where I was putting on my shoes and then laid at my feet! Gotta love this boy! Always ready to go and be wherever you are!

Hey fans! Can you believe this nice weather we're having? FM thinks we (foster sister and I) are spending more time outside than inside these days! We LOVE to run outside and see what's new, then meander around for quite awhile and sniff all the new parts of the yard!

Yesterday, we went for a walk. Whew! What a workout! So when we came back, everyone sat outside on the back deck and I rolled and rolled and rolled and rolled around in the snow! I was hot! I was so wet it almost looked like I had just gotten a bath!

FM thinks I'm one of the sweetest furr-butts they've ever had and wants everyone to know that I'm no more "work" than any other dog. I fit in great around here and I'm sure I'd do the same at your house! I just can't believe I've been here for over a year! While I love it, I wish I had a home of my own, to settle into and live out my GOLDEN years in comfort!

Hi Friends! I know it's been SUPER long since my last update, so I thought I'd better get on it!

First, as you can see in one of my pictures, I made a new friend!!! A BIG DOG FRIEND! However, this was only possible due to FM's experience and confidence as a trainer and handler! Therefore, she (as well as other experienced RAGOM volunteers) has decided that I might NOT have to be an only dog.

But I WOULD need two things in a forever home:

1. An experienced and confident owner who likes a challenge :) 2. A confident resident dog that won't feel threatened by another dog.

If those two things were accomplished, I have no doubt I would continue to thrive, as I have been in our two-dog household.

However, the most mischievous thing I've done (and is currently driving FM MAD!!), is that I ALWAYS find a way to the litter box! They put up a gate, I kept pulling it down. They tied the door knob shut to the railing on the steps and I ate the rope. Then they finally bought a REALLY nice, metal gate that screws into the door frame. So, when I figured out I couldn't just pull it down, I came up with a new strategy! This gate has a small kitty door (no bigger than 6" X 4"!), so I watched the cats. They walked right on through, so I tried too. Guess what? I FIT!!!!! SURPRISE! I'm such a good boy! :)\

If you'd like to come see my spunky personality now that things have started to slow down and life can once again continue it's normal routine, I'd LOVE to meet you. Contact your placement coordinator TODAY! Don't wait!

Well, Rocky is now considered a tried and true walking dog! He walks SO well with his gentle leader now, it's amazing! He needs very little correction and just wants to stay next to me. Also, I tried jogging with him a little bit and he just glides along so fluidly! He's DEFINITELY NOT a galloping moose...You've seen them! Up and down, tongue lolling around, racing towards that HUGE cake made of Milkbones at the end of the street! He's much more mild tempered and gentle than that! We went for 3 miles yesterday in some heat and humidity and he was more than happy to be with me! The day before I actually left him at home and walked by myself. When I returned home, I accidentally hit him with the door, because he had just hunkered down by the door where I left. WOW. Loyal boy and mama's baby.

I also finally got some pictures of two of his quirks. First, he likes to sleep with his head under the bed. Second, his FAVORITE place to be scratched is on his chest. Most of the time he puts both paws up on my arms and gets that comatose look on his face. One time, he was so much in 'la-la land' euphoria, he actually fell backwards!

I can't reiterate enough how sweet and gentle this guy is! While he still has lots of energy to play, walk, and run, he is truly a gentle, LOYAL soul at heart!
