Dexter 09-210

Profile

Meet Dexter, a young male GoldenDoodle puppy (Golden Retriever/Poodle Mix).  He was born on March 7, 2009, so that makes him 12 weeks old.

He is 27 pounds.  He was surrendered from a breeder due to his having a heart murmur, and them unable to afford the ultrasound he needs to check it out.

Dexter went to the vet today and is up-to-date on shots until he is 16 weeks old.  The vet graded his murmur at 4/5 out of 6.  She recommended him to the U of M to get an ultrasound done.  His appointment is Wednesday, June 3rd.  I'll write again when I find out more.

You sure couldn't tell he has a murmur!  We took him to the cabin last weekend where he played non-stop with my mother-in-law's 8 month-old Shih Tzu puppy.  He ran around chewing on sticks, chasing kids and other dogs.  He even went in the lake.  The neighbor's lab was showing Dexter how to fetch a tennis ball in the water and he would follow.  He is very playful, he loves to play tug, and he enjoys fetching a tennis ball.

This weekend, we did some landscaping.  There was plenty of dirt for him to play in, which he loved.  He would run around and dig holes and then lay in them.  He can be one dirty dog!

He is well on his way to being house-trained.  He will go to the door and scratch or bark.  At the cabin, he even pushed open the screen door, let himself out, and went potty!  He still has his accidents, so isn't 100% yet.

He goes to bed around 10:00 pm, and will sleep until 7:00 am, which is wonderful!  He sleeps in a crate with a fan blowing lightly on him.

We were so sad to say goodbye to our beloved Dexter on December 21, 2017.  Dexter passed away due to aggressive cancer at the age of 8.  He filled our lives with so much joy and is deeply missed. He was a sweet boy who loved the dog park, trying to catch fish at the cabin, going for runs with mom, playing with his dog buddies, romping around in the snow and mostly snuggling with his family. We are grateful to have had him for 8 years but wish he didn't have to leave us so soon.  He touched our hearts in a very special way.

Hello from Dexter!

It’s been a wonderful 7 months since I was adopted. I spent a great summer at the cabin. I loved swimming in the lake and enjoyed playing in the leaf piles this fall but the thing I love even more is all this snow! I can’t seem to get enough of it!! I am almost full grown at 72 lbs. The vet thinks I might even get a little bigger in the next few months. I am still a very sweet boy with a great personality. I eventually made friends with one of the cats that live here and I had my first haircut. What a difference all that fur makes! I hope you all have a great 2010!

Happy New Year from Dexter.

Happy Holidays!

Hi!

It’s Dexter.

Wow, what a day! I went to my new forever home yesterday. I met this family just the day before. I could tell that they took one look at me and they were hooked. I am a very sweet boy! The car ride home went well. I was pretty quiet…thinking about how much I will miss the wonderful foster family I lived with for a while. I am so glad they sent along my teddy bear. He is clearly my favorite toy. My new family planned to make the transition to my new house low key. Well, we no sooner got out of the car when Morgan, an 8 year old golden, came over to say hello. I was very happy to see her and we played for quite a while. Then I met Zek, a black lab, and Holly, a terrier, who were on a walk with their humans. They were also very nice. Finally, we went inside where I could take a little nap. The new bed my family bought me looked very comfortable but I preferred to lie on the nice cool ceramic tile.

After my nap, I went out to play with my new family. The 10 year old boy gave me a new ball. We are going to have a lot of fun chasing after that ball. He has as much energy as I do! The 12 year old girl really likes to cuddle with me. I was a little sad after waking up from my nap not recognizing where I was at first but she held me in her lap and I felt much better. She brushed me for a while (not that I needed it). I just hope she doesn’t try to dress my up in frilly clothes or paint my nails pink! The 3 year old is fun too. He learned my name quickly and likes it when I run with him. My new mom & dad are very impressed with how well potty trained I am thanks to all the love and care I received from my foster family. The two resident cats didn’t show too much interest in me. I was not offended when Maddie hissed at me. She is 20 years old and clearly rules this house as only a cat can do. I’m sure I will charm her in no time. Cougar the 3 year old cat was a bit shy. He came to say hi while I was asleep. I think he and I are going to be good buddies. I am told he really liked the two goldens that lived here before I came along.

While outside, I met a few more of my dog neighbors; Bailey, Gus, Maggie & Zoe. They all loved me of course! There seem to be as many dogs in this neighborhood as there are humans. I still haven’t met Patch, Molly, Hunter, Lucy, Impo, Bear and Shadow. I’m sure I will get to know these dogs in the next few days.

As you can imagine, I am pretty tired. I just wanted to thank Ragom and all the wonderful volunteers who took such good care of me and matched me up with my new family!! I think I am going to love it here. Thank you for all you did for me and my family and all of the other dogs whose lives you of touched!

I will keep in touch!
