Profile

Friday has arrived in Richfield on Sunday after a long ride from Iowa. First I would like to say a special thank you to the transporters who brought him to me, John & Carrie -they took the whole trip!  A special thanks for RAGOM  for taking Friday into our family. He will be well taken care of.Friday is a PB Male  Golden Retriever, red in color with a big blocky head and eyes to die for!  He is a real looker. The vet couldn’t believe he is almost 7!  I can’t either, he plays like he is 2 yrs old.

He is trying to settle in after leaving his family of 6 1/2 years.  They were very sad to surrender him, but they had their first child and couldn’t spend enough time with him now and they wanted a better life for him.  Friday is having to adjust to many new things right now new people and a resident dog to meet.  He came through meeting 5 humans on Sunday and did very well. I think he is realizing that his famiy is gone and he needs to stay with us.

A little shy and cowering at first, but seems to be fine after that.  Friday was a real trooper while we gave him a bath in the pool outside.  Let me tell you, it was real cold water from the hose but he just stoood there while 3 of us scrubbed him and rinsed him for about 1/2 hour.  What a good sport.  He really smelled because he was an outside dog and he will need a couple more baths and lots of brushing because he is shedding his winter coat. Yes, we got 2 bags of dog hair off him I thought we got 2 dogs! I don’t know if it was the humans attention or the nice cleaning we were doing for him, but he enjoyed it. Then we played and played. He loves his pheasant toy and his balls. Oh, did I say he is a hunting dog of pheasants the previous owner said. He took him hunting for years. So I am hoping to find him another family that hunts since he loves it, and swimming too!

You would never know he’s 6 almost 7. He is very energetic. I am not sure if this is how he normally is or if it is because he was kenneled outside and wasn’t being exercised enough.  It really doesn't matter we will figure it out as we get to know him better over the next week.  Friday has many wonderful years ahead of him.  He will be a wonderful companion & hunting dog for some lucky family.

So now for his health.  He went to the vet on Monday he is in good health.  Weighs 76 pounds, was brought up to date on all shots and Frontline also. He was a real good dog.  He is  also microchiped.   The vet just called and Heartworm is negative and the fecal test is negative also, yeah!!!!!!!!!!!.  So he is a very healthy dog.

So far we have learned that Friday would do best with the following in his forever home:

He needs a fence
He does not like cats
He has not had much exposure to kids . So I would say older kids may be better for him, or no kids - I could change my mind later as we get to know him better.
He would probably be best as a only dog he loves all the attention.  This may change as we get to know him more.
We took him for a walk last night on a flat collar and he did just fine. He is very strong, but he listens well to commands. He did get a little snarky at another dog but he quit when we said no.

So lots of  walks or perhaps a Jogging partner. He has a nice pace and likes to please so he is always right next to you when your walking.

Timber the resident dog could learn a few walking skills from him.

Everything is new to him so we need to be patient  but Friday is changing every day for the better. Now I know why there's the 3 day adjustment period when we take in new foster dogs.  They need to adjust to us and we need to adjust to them. He is getting more comfortable every day and we are enjoying him.

Let me say he has only been with us since Sunday so he hasn't really had much of a chance to settle into our routine yet.  We will keep learning what he likes and does not like.  I did learn when he first came he looked like he was snarling at us, but we have learned he is smiling at us. Its so cute.

I may need to revise Friday's needs in his Forever Home as we get to know him better.  He is one great dog! He has had to adapt to a lot of new noises, like airplanes and sirens and he seems to be just fine with those. We are working on introducing him to our resident golden slowly because Timber is the Wild Woman.

We will keep you updated on Fridays progress after his neuter on Friday.

It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the news with RAGOM that we had to say goodbye to our sweet pup, Friday.  I adopted Friday in 2009 when he was about five.  My entire family fell in love with Friday immediately…it took him a little longer to warm up to my dad though.  I remember my dad laying on the floor trying to coax him over with bacon.  Those two were inseparable after Friday relented and let my dad love him.

There was nothing better than coming home to Friday’s big, welcoming smile.  I’m tearing up a little now thinking about it.  He will be dearly missed.  We enjoyed the 7 years he was part of our family and hope we gave him the golden life he deserved.  A warm thank you to RAGOM, and also to Barb, his foster mom, for taking care of Friday before we found him and for choosing us to be his forever family.

I am a little tardy in my happy endings post, but that just gives me more wonderful things to share.  Friday has come such a long way the past 5 months--he wouldn't even look at me the first two days, he was afraid meeting my family and friends, hid in the bathtub when he was scared (pic attached) and absolutely would not go near my poor dad (who would try so hard laying on the ground near him, offering treats).  Luckily, a little time and Labor Day weekend spent running and swimming at the cabin did wonders to bring Friday out of his shell.

He has turned into a total love bug; he's got his nose right on my keyboard "helping" me type this post.  We spent the fall doing runs training for a race and weekends playing at the cabin.  Friday loves his toys.  I often find him laying amidst all of them with stuffing and hair everywhere.  My entire family is completely smitten with him: Friday got his own presents to open at Christmas this year including his own ornament for the tree, bone shaped cookies, and new red boots to wear in the snow so he doesn't get ice packed in his paws when we go for winter walks.  I think he liked shredding the wrapping paper the most.

We are still working on socialization.  He warms up to new people much quicker these days, and I am happy to report he and my dad are in love.  They still lay on the floor together watching TV and napping when Friday goes to Grandma and Grandpa's house.  Dogs and kids are a work in progress.  We took a one-on-one training class in the fall, and a 6 week socialization for aggressive dogs class this winter.  Turns out Friday has a good bite inhibition and showed potential to be a natural, social golden some day.  Winter has made exposure opportunities less frequent, but we will be back at it in the spring.  In the meantime, we watch a couple You Tube videos online to see some babies and dogs and do some training on these sounds and images being good things.

Overall, Friday has been a great addition to our family.  I love coming home after work to find him smiling--even if he has taken to lounging on my new couch when I'm gone.  Twice, while we have been out playing ball or walking, people have stopped and said "That is one happy dog".  It makes my heart smile to hear this.  I certainly like to think that is true.

Thank you Barb and Ragom for helping me find Friday.

Friday has been with us for almost 8 weeks. He has come along way since we began fostering him. He arrived dirty & smelly and was very scared and lacked socialization skills. But in the time we have had him, he has grown to trust us and come to us for petting and is much better with other dogs. He has finally  accepted our resident  female dog Timber, although they did have 2 scuffles the first 2 weeks he was here. But I do believe he learned to accept her as the resident dog and they each respected each other's spaces because there have been no more scuffles, which I am thankful for & so is Timber.

He is by far the most rewarding & challenging foster dog we have had. Friday was our 10th foster dog. He will always hold a very special place in my heart. He loved to be petted and sit by you. I will miss my walking partner & the bonding time we shared.

I have learned alot from Friday, that not all dogs get along, and that all dogs come around in their own time. We have seen him change very slowly and it has been very rewarding to see what we have  accomplished in these 8 weeks. I understand why us fosters do what we do but it gets harder each time to let them move on to their forever homes.  We cry & are happy to find them a good home, and then take another dog that needs our help and then find them a home too.

With all that being said Friday has found his forever home. He will be the only dog in his new home. He will get to take long walks and will be a jogging partner too. Friday will get to go to the lake in the summer time. Friday will go to obedience classes to continue with socialization skills and bonding with Micki.

It was sad to see him go. And I cried when he left, but I know he will be loved & spoiled by his new forever home.

Thank you Micki for seeing past his shyness & willing to work with him on his issues. He will be a wonderful  companion to you & your extended family. She said we could visit him and see his progress. I will hold her to it. Also to send Pictures.

Friday has been adopted & has gone to his new home.

We will miss you Mr. Friday

Love Foster Mom & Dad &  Resident dog Timber

Monday, August 3, 2009

Hello from Friday land. I am getting much better with the resident dog Timber. We just kinda look at each other. I think I was making Foster Mom nervous but we are all settling in better now.I just had to get used to the rules in a new home.  I think we are all happier in the house.  Let me tell you I get to go for walks long walks. Timber doesn't like walking so I get her share.  She doesn't know what she's missing but I won't tell her.  She would rather play ball and go to the dog park but I would rather walk & play ball.

I can't go to the dog park because I haven't had alot of socialization skills so I need to learn some first but I like being the only dog so that's fine with me.  I really like being outside and not kenneled all the time.  But, what I really, really like is being inside the house!  Boy have I missed out on a lot all these years!  But I am making up for it now.  I am living the golden life……that's what Foster Mom keeps telling me.

Timber likes to stay outside alot but I would rather be inside next to foster mom. I want to live the indoor life now.  I have rawhides and boy oh boy are they great!  Foster mom can't believe she can just come right up to me and take it away but she gives it back to me. I think she's testing me. Well, I passed. Timber, the resident dog turns into Cojo with the rawhide. You should see FM chase her to try and take it away. Boy when FM gets it then Timbers in trouble.  I wouldn't want to be her.

So let’s see just a recap what I need in my forever home.

1. No Cats
2. No Dogs because I want to be the only one.
3. I don't really need a fence but that would be great. A tie out is fine.
4. Lots of Walks
5. Swimming
6. Ball throwing and play time.
7. Lots of petting time.
8. Car rides. I Love them.

So if you would like to meet me let your placement advisor know. I will be waiting for that perfect family.

Thanks for reading up on me!

Friday the Man

P.S. Foster mom wants her computer back. So she will do the next update. Keep watching for Fridays Story.

Do I look like I am begging for something???  Maybe a treat??!!

Here I am with one of my favorite toys!!

Here is resident dog, Timber - isn't she cute too?

Waiting for more treats......

Friday has decided to open up more & more in these last 3 weeks. This is not the same dog that came to us dirty and scared 3 weeks ago. He has just melted our hearts to see what a change in homes can do for a golden that is now living indoors out of the heat, rain and dirt. He has proven to be housetrained with no accidents at all since we have had him.  Friday has shown us what lots of love and patience can do. That he can trust us now.  He is enjoying all his walks and play time. He takes a little time to warm up to everyone but it is well worth the wait.

Lack of socialization can do this to a dog. I have learned a lot from Friday also, but I can say it is all for the good.  We are teaching him all good things come from humans.  He came from 1 owner of 6 years. I can tell he was a very loyal companion to his SO and I am sure he is missing him.

I just want you to know I will find him a great home where he will be loved and enjoy the golden life.

He is a very special dog that has come into our lives for a reason.  I know being a foster that dogs choose us too, to make them feel safe and loved and find them a great forever home.

I realize we need to go slower with some dogs than others but they all come around to lots of loving, play time and treats.  I still believe he would flourish with the right family like he has done with us in this short period of time being an only dog so he can have all the attention and gain confidence.

On Sunday there were 5 humans doing yard work and there was Friday just playing ball with whoever threw the ball and following us around the yard. He was content and happy and a very tired dog.

If you are interested in meeting a very special loving dog please let your placement advisor know.  We would love to hear you!

I will let Friday do the next update.

Tired Dog After Playing Ball!

Look Into My Eyes....Aren't I Handsome?!!!

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

Friday continues to adjust slowly with our resident dog Timber. He is our 10th foster dog and very much different than the other foster dogs we have had.  By that I mean all the other foster dogs  have been socialized so it was much easier to introduce them to the resident dog Timber . The others have come right into the yard and wanted to start playing with her.  She would let them know she needed a little bit of time to adjust to them but within a few hours they were playing like they have been best buds for life.

Friday is not a player with other dogs.  We have had Friday for almost 3 weeks and he still is trying to get used to her.  She is leery of him because they have had 2 scuffles so far. This is why it is important to socialize your dogs when they are young so they don't have problems later in life.

We know he is a resource guarder of toys therefore we don't allow toys when they are around together. The same goes for food. This is a challenge for us trying to keep 2 dogs somewhat apart but yet get them to know each other.  He is opening up slowly but we still need to watch him. We know they will never play together but we want them to get along with each other and other dogs.

Friday is as gentle as can be with humans.  No problems there.  I can take anything away from him.  He is a wonderful cuddly dog.  Just loves to be petted and be by you.  We still are working on Friday to feel more confident in himself and understand there's 2 humans if not more that can give all dogs attention at the same time.  He is learning. He is a smart dog. I am sure he will come around it just takes time. Ragom dogs are not perfect, but they are all wonderful dogs and deserve the chance to lead the golden life.

Don't let this stop you from meeting him, he is a wonderful dog and a very loyal companion.  He just needs to be a only dog in the house.  He has bonded very well with us in the few short weeks we have had him.

Fridays loves his 3 mile walks daily and loves to play ball & pheasant.  He is at a  good weight of 74 lbs. No graying at all.

He has managed to make it through his 3rd bath… yes, I said 3rd bath in 2 weeks.  We got the ok from the vet he could have another bath so we gave him one yesterday outside.  He didn’t like the cold water, but us humans won out.  He smells so much better and his coat is shinier since he is on better dog food.  Lots of brushing out mats still but he's a trouper just loves the attention. Thank you furmanator!  It’s a god send for 2 golden's.

So if you are looking for 1 great dog and wonderful companion Friday is it. He will go for car rides & swimming & hunting & walks & lots of play time.  He is housetrained too.  Doesn't bark much only to let you know someone is there.  It takes him a little time to warm up to you but it is well worth the wait.

Let your placement advisor know if you are interested in meeting Friday. We would love to talk with you. He will reward you for a life time. There is that special family out there for him. Take a chance on him -you won't be disappointed.

Foster Mom & Dad

Friday got neutered on Friday and had a cracked tooth taken out. He is a happy dog now and is doing very well. It is real hard to keep him quiet. We have a resident dog, Timber and she's always running around so he needs to rest to recover so we try and keep them separate when we are playing with the resident dog.  He is slowly adjusting to being an indoor dog.  He still likes to sleep on the hard floor areas.   He does like sleeping on a rug once he bunches it up.

He has not even tried to jump up on the bed or the furniture which is good because we don't allow our dogs on them.  He hasn't had any accidents in the house or his crate when he goes in there.  We have had him in the laundry room at night and when were gone just in case he has a accident but he hasn't so maybe he is housetrained after all.  There is a lot of room there so he can move around freely & it’s cool. Otherwise he just roams freely in the house when were home.

He still pants sometimes.  I think because he is nervous & scared but it is getting better each day. He seems to love all the attention.  It is sad that such a loving dog hasn't lived the golden life from the beginning.  He started living the good life 1 week ago.  He really enjoys walks and that's about all he can do for now since his neuter and a tooth pull but he still tries to play with the soft plush toys. It is funny to watch him whip them in the air and then when he hears them squeak.

We go to the vet today and he should be able to do allot more since he's healing very nice.

Friday doesn't seem to know how to play with other dogs so we are very careful that the resident dog Timber doesn't rush him. He needs more socialization skills. We are working with him on this but we are moving slowly as some dogs take more time.  We need to remember he has lived in a 10 x 10 dog kennel for most of his of life.

Everything takes time and all dogs do adjust in their own time.  He has done very well for only being here 1 week.

He has really taken a liking to my daughter that's 25 yrs old. He just soaks up all the extra attention she gives him.

I told the SO I would try and make sure he went to a home that would hunt him & take him swimming. We took him swimming his first week here and he just loved it.

If you are interested in a loving dog that is content at being the only dog and taking long walks and lots of playing ,swimming & hunting  Friday may be the dog for you.  Don't let the fact that he's 6 scare you. He has many good years left !  His health is good.  He is just like my 3 yr old with lots of energy, but not over the top and loves to be petted.

So let’s recap what Friday needs in his forever home:

1. A fence - preferably a taller one.  He can go over a 4 ft chain link if he wanted too.

2. An only dog.

3. Lots of walks or perhaps jogging partner.

4. No cats

5. Swimming or a family that lives on a lake would be great!!!!!!!!!!

5. A hunting partner

6. Obedience  training

7. Older Kids 10 yr & up. He hasn't had much experience with kids that why I say older ones.

7. Someone that will love him and give him the golden life he deserves. You won’t be sorry.   He will love you forever!

If you are interested in meeting Friday please let your placement advisor know. Friday won't last long. He is one special golden!

This is one of my soft toys that I love!

Aren't I handsome??!!

Look at my beautiful red fur!

I love to smile - I am such a happy dog!
