Monroe 09-120

Profile

Monroe has finally made it up north after a 10 hour journey! Monroe is approximately 20 weeks old and came all the way from Missouri with his littermates Koda, Luca, and Archer. They came from a shelter and we think they are GR/Collie mixes.

Monroe slept through the night in his crate without a peep. When we awoke to snow (in April!) this morning I worried how he would respond. To my surprise...he LOVES it. He was running around, eating it, having a great time. We played outside for a little while since the snow won't last long and he was enjoying it so much.

We have a vet appointment tomorrow so I will update more after that.

Monroe is a complete joy in our lives!   He and his kids play, swim, run, field tennis balls and go boating regularly.  His groomer says his energy level is amazing considering his  "handsome, mature face".  Monroe is happy, healthy, hysterically funny and full of affection!   We love this boy so much!

We are forever grateful to his Foster Momma in Stillwater and RAGOM.  It was 7 years ago when we adopted Monroe.  Thank you for the work you do to make a better life for the GRs you rescue and the families that are lucky enough to adopt through you!

Love from Monroe and The L Family

Saturday, August 7, 2010

I am Monroe's former foster mom and was lucky enough to have him visit for the last few days. It was just a few days past his one year adoption anniversary and so good to see him. He is healthy, gorgeous, and happy as can be. He LOVES his family and they are absolutely perfect for him! They go to their cabin often and he LOVES the water and swimming with the kids, playing outfield when they play baseball, and getting plenty of exercise.

I could not have imagined a better family for Monroe to spend his life with! Thank you L family for giving him such a wonderful life!

He had 2 busy days of running with my current foster, Hannah 09-481. They were perfect playmates as they are both high energy, young pups who love playing chase!

Seeing my fosters in their forever families and knowing it's the perfect match is exactly why I foster. I keep telling Hannah that just as the L family is perfect for Monroe, the family that is perfect for her will find her. Yeah for happy endings!

Today is a big day. It is the beginning of the rest of Monroe's life and the next chapter of his story. He met a wonderful family who drove 4 hours to meet him yesterday. As I type this, he is on his way home with them....his forever family. He has 3 kids to play with him and love him and a kitty sibling to play with, a lake cabin to swim at, and is starting obedience class this week. Monroe's new family has promised to give him all the love and attention he deserves as well as lots of exercise. Monroe jumped into their car today and wasn't about to let them leave without him.....I can tell he already loves them.

He was the foster I had the longest, and he will always have a special place in my heart. He will be coming to the RAGOM picnic in September and it will be wonderful to see him again knowing he is exactly where he should be.....with his forever family.

Thanks L family for welcoming Roe Roe into your family. I can't wait to continue to see what the future holds for him!

Mr. Monroe continues to do well and wait for his forever family to find him. Everyone who meets him thinks he is so cute and is surprised he hasn't been adopted yet.

Last week Monroe went to doggy daycare 3 times, and this week he went twice. The staff said he did great and played with all the dogs the whole time he was there. He pulls me from the parking lot to the building and can't wait to start playing. As soon as he is in with the other dogs, he throws that little butt of his up in the air in the play bow position and is off playing! It's a great way for him to burn off some of his puppy energy and it would be wonderful if his forever family would be able to bring him to a doggy daycare occasionally to play and socialize.

This week he also met a 7 week old GR mix puppy and decided he loved to play with him as well. It was wonderful to see how Monroe changed his play style for a little puppy. Initially, he played like he does with big dogs, but then soon changed to playing on his back...belly up...and the puppy on top. I was SOOO proud of him! It was wonderful to see another way he has changed since he came to me.

We are still working on potty training....luckily it's summer time so we spend lots of time outside. He will get it.......eventually. He continues to keep his crate completely dry when he is in there.

I'm really loving this boy, and am determined he will find a perfect forever family. Is that you?

Just a quick update to say Monroe went swimming for the first time this past weekend. He went with a neighbor Golden (and RAGOM alumni) and she showed him how to swim out and fetch sticks. I took him again yesterday by himself and he would JUMP into the lake. Maybe he could become a dock dog? I was so proud of him being so brave and jumping into the water and swimming around all by himself!

As time has gone on I am more and more convinced living with another dog (or a balanced pack of dogs) would be great for this little guy. He's made such strides while in foster care and I can't wait for the perfect family to find him!

Monroe is doing great and I would love to find his forever family so he can bond with them! Today I decided to send him to doggy daycare for the day with one of my resident dogs. He was there all day and the staff said he did great and played with all of the dogs. They also have a bunch of toys out for the dogs to play with and he didn't guard them from the other dogs. I am just so proud of him and his improvement. He continues to make improvements and just loves to play with other dogs. In fact, with the right fit, I think he would love a dog sibling. What's the right fit you ask? My guess is that the other dog would need to love to play (so probably young), would be confident (not passive), and would be able to continue to teach Roe all about doggy life.

Now when we go for walks he can pass dogs without barking at them more often than not. If the other dog barks, he still feels it necessary to pipe in too. We have gone for 6 1/2 mile walks twice now and he did great. We stopped at a pond about halfway through and he walked right in and layed down to cool off and get a drink. He seems to really like water and enjoys the plastic kiddie pool too.

He's still a champ at sleeping at night, but is awake and busy all day. Potential families need to remember he is a 7 month old puppy and an active one at that. He'd love a job (agility, swimming, obedience, etc). I keep thinking how I would love to see him with sheep because I wouldn't doubt he would know how to herd them right up. When he plays, he often lays on his belly or "stalks" the other dog and then........bam....he pounces. It makes me laugh every time!

I haven't gotten a chance to weigh him recently, so I don't know if we have finally surpassed the 30 lb mark yet or not. At this rate, he'd be lucky to hit 40 lbs........my little pocket Golden. Part Golden, part energizer bunny.....ha ha.

If you think Monroe would be a good fit for you, please let your placement advisor know!

Monroe and I had a weekend full of socialization and I was so proud of him! He is truly making progress.

On Saturday, we went over to my sister's house and he played with their 80 lb lab for 5 hours! No growling, just lots of wrestling and chasing. He even slept on the porch for 20 minutes partway through (him laying down for a nap is unheard of usually). It was a great time. Sunday we walked down to watch the first annual Stillwater marathon. He met 6-8 different dogs ranging from small (4 month old puppy) to an adult Great Dane. He did great!! We also walked past lots of other dogs to help him learn he doesn't need to meet every dog he sees. He was a sport while we cheered on the runners and wasn't fazed by the large number of people, the speakers, or anything else. What a good boy Monroe!!

It would be great if he had a fenced in yard in his forever yard, not because he is a runner, but because he has so much energy. We often go over to my neighbor's fenced yard so he can run and play. He likes to be outside but being on a tie out he will sometimes bark because he wants more freedom or gets stuck somewhere.

We are still working on potty training. People are surprised he isn't potty trained yet but we have to remember that for the first 4-5 months he wasn't able to work on it. I have no doubt he will get it with continued consistency and it's just like potty training a 3 month old puppy for the moment. He still has never had an accident in his crate and now runs in when I say "go in your crate". Roe walks much better with his Gentle Leader and NEEDS his daily walks. Someone who is active and wants an active doggy partner would be ideal.

All is all, he is doing great. Like I mentioned before, I am open to considering applicants who may have a resident dog (or dogs) as long as they like to play and aren't too submissive. He loves to play with other dogs and so if there is the right fit and the family knows his quirks, I am definitely open to it.

Busy bee Monroe here. I'm still waiting for my forever family to find me. I'm doing well here with FM and my 3 furry foster brothers but having a family of my own will be so exciting. I don't know why they haven't found me yet, I'm right here! Silly humans. Anyways, sure, I've got a few quirks about me that my forever family will need to continue to work with me on. But c'mon, who DOESN'T have things to work on. That's what FM tells me anyways and I promise to continue to try my hardest to do what is right. I am getting to be a pro at "sit", I'm also learning "lay" and "leave it". Oh, and FM finally pulled out that dreaded Gentle Leader a few days ago for our walks. At first I did my best impression of an alligator rolling but each time we go for a walk I am doing it less and less. It makes FM laugh cause our walks usually have at least a few stops so I can roll in the grass and try to get that darn thing off. Anyways, I walk better with it so FM says it stays.

If you are looking for a running partner, a hiking partner, or something else active, I could be your guy. FM tells me I am not hyper, just busy. I'm a on-the-go kind of guy.....there is so much in life to enjoy and I don't want to miss out. And when I go and play with the neighbors dogs....you should see my moves. Whoa.....watch out! I crouch down so they can't see me coming and then come in at 100 miles an hr at the end. It's so fun! Then I run around trying to get them to chase me.

I went with the resident Sheltie yesterday to the vet. FM thought I would enjoy going with and I did. I'll admit, I barked at the other dogs but I need to learn that isn't the best way to say "hello". See, I don't mean harm, I just want to meet them. Unfortunately, growling doesn't make the other dogs feel very comfortable. Just one of my things to continue to work on! Oh, and FM weighed me and I am still under 30 lbs......that's me....pocket golden!

Mr. Monroe has returned to RAGOM. Turned out the resident dog and he couldn't figure things out. While it's always disappointing when things don't work out, I was excited to see him and am even more determined to find his FOREVER family.

He is still a peanut of a guy weighing in around 29 lbs. The vets think he will max out around 45 lbs as an adult! I call him my pocket Golden. :)

He is healthy as can be, all healed up from his neutering, and even enrolled in obedience class.

Monroe has been back with me for a few days while I pondered what type of forever home would best fit him. The main thing I have been trying to figure out is if he would do best in a multi-dog family or as the only dog. It has been difficult for me to decide as he loves playing with other dogs. I have 3 resident males here who he does well with for the most part and yesterday we went to a dog party at another RAGOM volunteer's house where there were 9 dogs. He did quite well. He enjoyed wrestling with a fellow golden puppy (who was a few months older but nearly twice his weight). After that we went and had a BBQ and for some reason he started getting grumpy with the 2 other dogs. I am not sure what his reasoning was......if he was trying to stake out the kitchen, if he was tired, or just grumpy.

So, I think Roe Roe would do best without any other full time dogs in the house. (ADDENDUM FROM FOSTER MOM: Monroe has improved and evolved so much that you have to keep reading his updates below to see how his interaction with other dogs has changed!) At the same time, I feel it's VERY important that he gets TONS of playtime and socialization with other dogs. After all, he is only 6 months and we don't know what the first 4 months of his life were like. What I don't want, is for his forever family to avoid bringing Monroe around other dogs because he might protect a toy here or there. I want a family who is willing to work with him on this. Maybe he will end up learning there is no need to guard toys from other dogs, maybe not, but I want him to have people who are dedicated to help him be the best dog he can be. (As a side note, he never guards from people and will let me take toys and food away without a problem)

He would also LOVE to do agility I think. With his compact body he has quite some moves when he is playing and he's got the energy for it. It would be a great way for him to be around other dogs, bound with his forever family, and burn off energy. He is also a very smart little boy so working his little mind will be good for him

I mentioned before, but I think it is worth mentioning again, that Monroe can be vocal sometimes. If you are looking for a dog who never barks...it's not him. He's not as obnoxious as the resident Sheltie....but can feel it necessary to join in if he hears another dog barking. This too is something I think can be worked with.

Monroe is great about going into his crate for nighttime and often sleeps 9-10 hours. I LOVE that about him as I love to sleep. :)

He also is really good with kids (the family who adopted him has a 6 and an 8 yr old who they said he did great with).

So...a quick run down of what he is looking for in his forever family:

  • No other full time dogs but someone who will make sure he continues to get socialization and play time with other dogs
  • Kids are fine....he loves them
  • Fenced or unfenced yard
  • People who will work with him to fine tune a few things via obedience school and consistency
  • Ideally...someone who is OK with dogs on the couch because he loves to snuggle up there. :)

If you would like to meet Monroe, please contact your placement advisor.

Monroe met a family last weekend and they have decided they would love to add him to their family. He will have a fur sister (who is a RAGOM alumni), and two human brothers to hang out with. His new mom will be home most days with him so he is very lucky. They also have plans to bring him to obedience class and maybe agility (which I think he would do wonderful at!).

Just one more stop for Roe before he continues on his adventure.....he is getting neutered this Wednesday. After he heals from that, he will be officially adopted.

WOOF!

Yup, it's me again....Monroe. Spring is here and life is good. I had to postpone that meet and greet with that family until this Saturday....so I've just been hanging out and enjoying myself.

Foster Mom and I have been taking lots of long walks....sometimes twice a day! Oh boy. I like to lead the way and am starting to pull....FM says there may be a Gentle Leader in my future.....I don't know what that is. I still like to pick up a stick along the way, then I drop it and find something else to pick up. Sometimes I just relocate litter.....but it sure is fun. FM sometimes jogs with me and I like that too.

I am also trying to join in the fun with my fur foster brothers. I haven't really woven my way into their hearts (FM says its not just me.....they don't give their hearts easily to foster dogs) but I run around and chase them while they play. Oh, and if they start barking.....I pipe right in...heck...I have things to say too!

Couches are fun to jump up on and relax. I like to grab a toy and enjoy it up on the couch.....ha ha, the resident dogs can't get me there! Sometimes I will snuggle with FM while he lays on the couch in the evenings. Of course last night I decided to try a little piece of the couch.....nope, no squeaker in there. Oops, guess I'm not supposed to chew on that. Its just....these puppy teeth....they MAKE me chew on stuff...I can't help it. Most of the time I'm good at chewing on my toys and bones. A little redirection and Bitter Apple spray on the things I'm not supposed to chew on and I move on.

I still sleep in the crate all night...no peeps until morning time.

I'm really doing well socializing and making up for my early puppy hood. FM says whoever adopts me into their family needs to continue to expose me to new places and things. I also need someone to help me keep working on sharing my toys (sometimes I worry other dogs are going to take my stuff). I'm so happy me and my brothers were saved by RAGOM and can't wait to see what else life brings me!

Thursday, April 9, 2009

Hi everyone....It's Monroe...(you can call me Roe Roe too if you want)....foster mom said I could do my own update this time. Oh boy, my life just keeps getting better and better.

I'm having a great time as part of the RAGOM family. I love rolling in the grass, and carrying sticks around. FM takes me on walks and I just love them! Yesterday we walked to a nearby golf course and I waded in the pond. Ooooh was that fun, except it was sort of mucky so I got a bath when we got home. I was a good boy and just stood in the tub while FM scrubbed me up. Then I took a long nap!

I get a little scared when FM wants me to get in the car, I'm not ready to jump in myself so she has to get me and plop me in. Once I'm in, I sit in the backseat without a peep. In fact, I don't really even move much. I'm getting better because we go in the car at least once a day and I am learning it's nothing to be afraid of.

FM said I have to go back to the vet today to see if my temperature is normal. I guess if it is I have to get a few shots....but FM assures me they will be quick and I will get treats. Yummy! I ate a bunch of those last time I went to the vet and am so good at sitting for treats too!

FM told me that on Saturday we are going to meet a family that is interested in me. I hear they have some boys that want to play with me and another dog too. I will be sure to give kisses and will let everyone know how it goes.

Spring is here everyone. Remember to roll in the grass on your back...it feels so good. I haven't seen FM do it yet though....maybe she's watching me to learn and she'll join in soon.

Bye!
Monroe

Monday, April 6, 2009

Mr. Monroe weighed in at 26.5 lbs today at the vet but was running a little bit of a fever so the vet decided to wait a few days for his vaccinations. He was microchipped and blood was drawn for a heartworm/lymes test (which came back negative...yeah!). His heart, lungs, and everything else looks good and we will return on Wednesday to hopefully get his Distemper and Bordetella vaccinations.

He also went with me today to work and met a 6 yr old, 8 yr old, and 9 1/2 yr old. No problems with the kids and gave little kisses and sat nicely to get pets. Monroe is officially fine with kids. I do think very young kids (babies, toddlers) might be too much for him as occasionally he will react to very fast movement.

Monroe also enjoys to use his voice at times and will join in the barking if the 3 resident dogs get going. He also was barking when he heard geese in a nearby pond. He quieted down nicely when I told him enough was enough.

He's begun playing with toys more and today figured out how to get the Wubba to squeak! Oh, such fun. He enjoys getting a toy and jumping up on the couch to enjoy his prize......it's so great to see him happy and enjoying his life!

All is all he is just doing great. Because he is only 20 weeks old, he needs a forever home where he is not left home alone all day. His bladder can not make it for a full work day. He also needs a forever family that will continue to expose him to new things and places. He does stay near me while outside so I think he would do fine with a fenced yard or unfenced yard.

Enjoy the pics of this cutie!
