This weekend I'll be celebrating my 8th birthday!  I now have a few gray hairs on my nose, and a little frosting on my ears, but I am still just a big puppy at heart.

The folks finally decided it was time to open our hearts and home to permanent fur-sibling for me.  Corky (Dixie Rose 16-125) joined our family in July.  Corky was pretty frightened when she came to our house, so I've done my best to show her how fun life can be.  Corky took her first camping trip to the North Shore a couple of weeks ago.  I think next time she should have to wear a pack too!

Wow - it's another Happy Gotcha Day for me! Mom and dad say they can't believe I've been part of the family for 5 years. They've pretty much given up on me ever acting my age, I am going to act young and silly forever.

This year I've been enjoying a little person they call the grandson. When the grandson comes to visit I follow him around like a shadow. I like to lay quietly under the grandson's chair when he eats because lots of good things fall my way. I also love when the grandson reads to me.

We still have lots of foster dogs coming and going. Mom and dad laugh at me when the fosters come. I'm not a "go with the flow" kind of girl. If the foster likes to play, then we play hard until we're exhausted. If the foster doesn't like to play, I am fearful and tippy-toe around the house always making sure I have one eye on the foster. After the fosters get adopted the results are the same, I need a big long nap on the couch to recover.

We did have some very sad news at our house this past year. My big sis Bailey went to the Rainbow Bridge. Mom and dad cried lots of tears and I took it pretty hard too. For a couple of weeks I didn't want to leave our front step. I am happy to report I am now back to my silly self and I love life to its fullest.

Thanks again to everyone at RAGOM for finding me the perfect furever home! Talk to you next year!

It’s my 4th Gotcha Day today! My big news is I can now do free roam for a full work day without getting into too much trouble. Previously I had to be crated or gated in the kitchen because it seems I have a nose for mischief. Now I’m content to play with my toys and pull the fleece blankets off the sofas without shredding them. The folks say they can live with my rearranging of the blankets so it’s free roam for me while they’re at work – yippee!

Free Roam!

Speaking of my nose for mischief, look what it found this spring. Yep, Mr. Porcupine and I had a close encounter of the unfriendly kind. We were on a hike at one of my favorite places, The Farm, when BAM Mr. P got me! Luckily mom knows I have the tendency to get into mischief so had previously stopped at the local vet to sign Big Sis Bailey and I up as patients in case we ever needed vet care while at The Farm. A quick trip in to see Dr. Rose in Perham along with some happy medicine and I was better in no time.

Josie and Mr. Porcupine

My family and Bear’s family still like going to The Farm. Doesn’t it look like fun??!!

We still have foster dogs spending time at our house. I don’t quite understand it because I love them all but some of them don’t love me back! Princess, Maggie, Fuzzy, and Elijah all thought I was the best playmate ever. But the older gals Peanut, Shiloh, Hannah, and Jadyn just thought I was really silly.

Again I want to thank all of the RAGOM volunteers for helping me find my perfect home. My mom tells me it’s amazing what goes on behind the scenes. There are volunteers that work with people wanting to surrender their dogs and volunteers that help surrendered dogs find foster homes. There are volunteers that arrange for transportation of a surrendered dog and volunteers that help transport surrendered dogs to foster homes. There are volunteers that foster dogs, volunteers that arrange home visits, volunteers that do home visits, and volunteers that help adopters meet foster dogs. And there are many more volunteers beyond those I just mentioned. And they all do it because they love Goldens and it’s important to them to help dogs like me find a furever home. Mom’s right, RAGOM volunteers are AMAZING!

Hi it's me Josie (Lacey 09-048) celebrating my 3rd Gotcha Day!

My folks said something very important happened to me this year. They said "3" was my magic number! My vet thinks I'm very entertaining when I wiggle all over and try to kiss her during my exams so my mom always asks "is Josie EVER going to settle down?". The vet said some dogs take until they're "3" - and that was me! Now if you meet me you might not think I've settled down, but those of you that have known me awhile can tell I'm just a smidgeon calmer than I used to be. Hooray for me!

Big Sis Bailey and I have still been busy welcoming in the foster dogs. I adore every single one and love to teach them how to do my devil dog wrestling. We've had a few wee ones (puppies) sleep over on their travels to their foster homes and boy are they fun! My mom would like to send a special thanks out to everyone who fosters the wee ones, she doesn't know how you get anything else done when there's a wee one in the house!

My favorite place to go is the farm we own with Bear's (Red 09-482) family. It is truly doggy heaven there. We have a 6 acre yard, a river to swim in, and lots of trails through the woods. We dogs love when our folks take us to the farm for the weekend, it's the best thing ever.

My dad is the picture taker in our house, and he did the coolest thing. My first day at my furever home he snapped a picture of me and Big Sis Bailey running on our lake. This year he snapped another picture of the two of us. It's funny how he caught my personality both times!

I want to thank everyone at RAGOM for helping me find my way to my family. Over three years ago I was dropped off at a shelter sick and in pain from my severe entropion. I had no idea life would turn out so good!

Love,
Josie

Happy Gotcha Day to Me…Happy Gotcha Day to Me…

That’s what I’m singin’ again!  It’s been two short years since I moved from the fabulous fosters to my furever home.  And you know what’s great? I don’t really have anything new to report!  And I like that because I like my routine.  My college brother was home a few weeks ago to get his wisdom teeth out and since he was feeling under the weather that first morning mom tried to skip our morning walk.  I tried talking to her about it but she didn’t listen.  I can be pretty vocal but she completely ignored me.  So I started picking things up off the floor and she didn’t really pay any attention to me she just said “not now Josie I’m busy”. So I grabbed a pillow off the couch and started making a horrible noise while I ran around the living room with that pillow. Now THAT got her attention! I just had to remind her that we have a certain way of doing things around here and I like it that way. Morning walk comes first, then it’s breakfast, then I lounge on the bed while everyone gets ready for work. Unless it’s the weekend then we all lounge around the kitchen table over coffee and the paper. But morning walk ALWAYS comes first!

I have made some great new friends now that we are regular fosters for RAGOM puppers looking for furever homes.  I love each and every one of them; they instantly become my BFF the minute they walk in the door.  My fur-butt sister, Bailey, and I think we make a mighty fine foster team.  She teaches them how to respect their elders and I teach them how to play with the best of them.  Some of our pictures look quite frightening but it's all just fun, I haven't had a single scuffle with any of them.  The only bad thing is I really miss them when they leave.  It takes me a few days to get over it, but then I bounce back to my normal silly self.  And before long there’s another foster walking in the door.

I've been able to make contact with a few of the people involved in my rescue. I want to say a special thanks to Jo at the shelter in Cloquet for watching over me while I was there and for helping with my transport. Jan and Rosemarie do tons of transports for dogs needing rides to and from MN and IA. They did part of my transport and I was very happy to see them again when we were part of a transport last summer. Thanks Jan and Rosemarie! And then of course there's my fabulous fosters, Pete and Kris, from Cedar Rapids. They were the best fosters ever. I miss you guys and hope we can see each other again some day. I know there are lots of other volunteers who helped along the way too, I hope I get to meet you too someday! Thanks for everything!

Love,

Josie

From Josie~

Hey, it’s already my birthday again.  And you know what mom and dad got me?  My very own foster brother, Bear 10-277, who shares the same birthday with me!  How cool is that?  I think Bear is the best present ever.  I love to play, and play, and play, and play with him and he plays back!  My big sis Bailey mostly ignores me so I am very happy to have a playmate.  I guess he’s only here until he finds his furever home, but I kinda hope that takes a long long time because he’s GReat!

It’s been another fun year for me.  Mom and dad are co-owners of an old farmhouse with RAGOM Bear’s (Red 09-492) family.  We got to spend time exploring the 6 acres around the house and best of all Bear and I got to swim in our very own river!  I swim like a fish.  And Bear, well he doesn’t swim like a fish but more like a paddle boat but that’s OK I like to swim with him anyhow.  Our parents think we’re hilarious together.

We took another camping trip to the North Shore.  Again I was an awesome camp dog.  I love to swim in Lake Superior, hike, and watch for chipmunks at the campsite.  The chipmunks at home are scared of me and run.  But the ones at the campsite come right up to me so I freeze and let them walk right around my feet!  Mom and dad couldn’t believe I could hold so still for so long.  They almost thought about inviting one of those camp chipmunks home with us to keep me entertained.

Dad and I are looking forward to doing some pheasant hunting this fall.  I went some last year but there weren’t a whole bunch of pheasants around so I didn’t get to practice much.  But my nose is awesome, my energy level is high, and I’m not gun shy so we’re going to try again this year.  Big sis Bailey still gets to go too and she’s almost 10!

Mom says now that I’m two I should think about settling down a bit.  People call me things like “spirited” and “a pistol”.  Those are really good qualities to have, aren’t they?  Apparently mom doesn’t think so. Just last week I climbed +20’ up in a tree!  The bottom of the tree was kind of slanted but as I got higher it went straight up and I had to hang on to the branches to keep going.  I really thought there was something in the top of the tree and by gosh I was going to see what it was.  When mom sounded like she might have a heart attack I decided to turn around and come back down the tree and did so without a problem.  I sure don’t know what her fuss was all about, I was FINE!  I actually started my tree climbing career awhile ago, for any of you with 2010 RAGOM calendars check out Miss March!

Our family would again like to thank RAGOM and all of the volunteers for helping dogs like me find their furever homes.  Even though mom likes to pick on me, I know she and dad love me with all of their heart.

Love, Josie

Greetings from Josie (fka Lacey 09-048)!

Today we're celebrating my "Gotcha Day"!  One year ago I made the trip from my fabulous foster home in Cedar Rapids, IA, to my furever home near Mankato, MN.  And what an awesome year it's been!

My big sis Bailey is my BFF.  We get to go for at least two walks every day.  When I first moved here mom promised to walk us early (like 4:45 AM early - yawn!) every morning come rain or shine.  Mom forgot that that some mornings in the winter have a windchill like -25 degrees!  Brrrrrr!  Bailey and I don't mind the cold at all but mom sure gripes about it.  Dad usually takes us on our afternoon walk, that's when we get to hit the trail in the woods to see if there's been any critters out and about.

Are you home, Mr. Fox?

I finally taught Bailey rough housing is a fun game, it took me almost a whole year to teach her.  I guess you really can teach an old dog new tricks.  Don't let our picture scare you, we really were having a grand time.  I think Bailey just tolerated me when I first moved in, but now I think she really likes me.

Rough housing with Bailey

I still like to pester Allie, my kitty-sis.  Allie has really sharp claws, but for some reason she usually doesn't use them on me.  When she's had enough of my pestering she'll stick one claw on the top of my nose which causes me to freeze and makes mom and dad laugh.  They say I deserve it!  I don't know what they mean, so as soon as Allie lets me go I go right back to pestering her.

Me and Allie

I've also turned into quite the little housekeeper.  I like everything to be in it's place.  If someone leaves something out (shoes, slippers, purses, screwdrivers, big metal tape measures, remotes, etc.) I pick it up and bring it to mom or dad.  I don't wreck things, but I certainly don't like things left laying around.  Boy was I busy at Thanksgiving, we had quite a crowd and I had so many shoes and purses to pick up!  You should have seen the pile of things that ended up in our laundry sink, aka "the safe place".

Look what I found

Mom, Bailey, and I are now RAGOM volunteers.  Mom does transport and I help her do home visits.  At first Bailey was her main helper, but mom says now that I'm growing up a little I can go on home visits with her.  I love going on home visits and meeting the potential adopters.

I have a special note to my fabulous foster family.  Remember you sent me home with a new blanket and my favorite toy?  I still love my blanket, and Squeaky is still one of my favorite toys.  I don't play with Squeaky when I'm wild and crazy (which is often!) but when I need to unwind I'll pick up Squeaky and lay on my blanket for some quiet time.  I've de-squeaked every other toy in the house, but I have a special place in my heart for Squeaky.

Relaxing

I want to thank all of the RAGOM volunteers for helping dogs like me find their furever homes, you guys are the best!

Love,
Josie

From Josie’s (fka Lacey 09-048) forever family…

The first few months of Josie’s life are a mystery so we picked 10/07 to celebrate her birthday. Happy Birthday Josie!

Josie spent a lot of time in the lake this summer; her favorite game to play is dock dog. Her second favorite thing to do is play a land game of retriever with a ball, stick, or Frisbee.

She adores her big sister, Bailey, and still takes many cues from her. She continues to pester the cat and the cat continues to ignore her. Our dogs have never been allowed on the furniture but Josie has this look that melts your heart so now spends quite a bit of time snuggled up on the couch with us.

We took the dogs camping on the North Shore in September; she had a blast and was a great camper.

She is quite a character and has brought a lot of laughter into our home. Thank you RAGOM.

Greetings from Josie (fka Lacey 09-048),

I’ve been in my new home for three great weeks now and thought it was time for me to check in with Ragom. The first thing I want to do is thank my FM and FD, they were the best fosters a pup could wish for. I was with them for a month and needed a lot of TLC while I was there.  I was running a fever, needed entropion surgery, and knew nothing about how to be a house dog. FM and FD gave me lots of love and taught me to sit, down, stay, off, and walk nicely on a leash.  They worked on my housetraining, which I’m happy to say I have mastered now. They made multiple trips to the vet with me so that I was all ready for my furever home.  I was one healthy and happy pup when mom and dad came to take me home to MN!

I love my new home. I have a fur-sister, Bailey, who really likes to show me how to live the Golden life.  The ice just went off our lake so Bailey’s been showing me how to wade.  I love the water and I hear once it gets a little warmer I get to learn how to swim!  I’m not afraid of anything, so I’m sure I’ll have no problem doing a dog paddle.  Bailey and I get to go for walks in our woods every day.  She is showing me how to use my nose and check for critters in the trees and bushes.  My dad says I have a great nose and maybe I can help him find some pheasants in the fall.

I have a cat named Allie.  Allie ignores me, but I have a hard time ignoring her back.  I keep hoping if I keep pestering her maybe one of these days she’ll play with me!

I also have a couple of college brothers.  One was home for a week on spring break, and the other came home for a visit over a weekend. They both think I’m awesome!

When I’m in the house I like to be in the same room as everyone else.  As long as I have my blanket (a gift from FM) and my toy bucket, I’m very good at just hanging out where my people are.  I love to snuggle, retrieve my tennis ball, chew on my rawhides, and have my tummy rubbed.  I’m just a very easy dog to have around!

My eyes are looking much better.  My left eye might need a little touch up when I get spayed, but the right eye looks great.  We’ll have the vet check me out before we schedule my spay surgery.

Mom and dad tell me every day how much they love me and how lucky they are to have me as part of their family!  They say I have a lot of things to look forward to, like more obedience classes (I've been to two so far and I love them) and a trip up north to the cabin.  I can't wait!

Josie

Do you see any squirrels?

Hey Bailey, check these guys out!

C'mon, Mom!

Lacey was adopted today by the J family.  She will be called Josie from now on and will have two big brothers and a golden sister, Bailey to keep her busy.  The J family is the perfect family for little Josie and she seemed to know they were here for her!!  Congratulations to all!! We will miss you!!

Lacey survived her surgery well and is now looking much better than she does in this picture... she wears her cone until Thursday when she gets her stitches out and a nice bath. She may need another surgery in the future when she gets spayed but will hopefully, be in her forever home at that time.A Minnesota family will visit her on Saturday...

Saturday, February 21, 2009

Here is Lacey after a rousing game of soccer!!  She will have her eye surgery on Monday and then recuperate for 7-10 days.  Wish her luck!!

Sunday, February 15, 2009

Lacey is such a sweetie... she has enjoyed the latest snowfall - 4 inches - and loves to follow foster sis Maren wherever she goes...

When Maren jumps on the couch, Lacey follows:

Lacey will be meeting a MN family shortly after her eye surgery in a few weeks...

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Lacey visited the vet yesterday and was a very good girl.  She weighs 26 pounds and was found to have a temperature along with her eye problems.  She is now on antibiotics and is much perkier today!!  Lacey has entropian, a problem with her lower eyelids and will be probably having surgery to correct this in two weeks.

She has been somewhat fearful from the beginning but is getting more friendly and playful each day.  She likes to follow Maren and Yosi around and today had no accidents!!! Yippee!!

Lacey is doing very well on her walks and has impressed many of the neighbors (she walks better than their dogs!!).  Lacey appears thus far to have a calm personality.  She has gorgeous, thick fur that is so soft....

Please contact placementatragom [dot] org if you would like more information.

Here I am on the left with Maren, my mentor!!!  It is great weather here in Iowa!!
