I finally have a name and now I'm a RAGOM girl. I arrived last week with a bunch of other dogs from a breeder who decided to retire. I lived outside and now I'm learning about living inside a house. There is confusion about my age because I act like a puppy but look like an adult. I don't understand tenderness, love or kind words. City noise and home stuff scares me a little but I'm adjusting because my foster parents are patient with me. I'm learning to go outside to do my business but that is sort of hard for me right now. I had an ear infection but it's all better. And I'm eating some really good food, so my hair will shine. I'm only 55 lbs and should gain some weight, but I'm not very hungry.
FD & FM are always telling me that I'm a good girl and they sit with me and run with me and try to play. They tell me that I'm beautiful all the time. I don't understand any of this. My foster sister Meg is teaching me what I should know about being a RAGOM dog. She was adopted from RAGOM last year and came from a puppy mill, too. She shares her toys and we talk alot about life then and now.
Before I go I want to tell you about my other new kitten friend, MiMi. We play hide and seek and sometimes I share my food with her. She is very fast and a lot of fun to play with. She likes to sleep on top of my crate. If FM leaves my tether on MiMi will chase it and play. I should go so FM can write a few words.

We don't know much about her past except that she may have had a few litters. We will be doing an ultra sound pregnancy test in a couple weeks. If there's no activity in her tummy, then she will be spayed. She has had some socialization with humans because she is submissive, but not afraid of people.
What we do know about her future needs:

Hi,
We adopted Daytona from RAGOM back in 2009. She passed away just a few weeks ago in June. Attached is a picture of her. We loved every minute we had with her. We were so lucky to have her. Our other RAGOM dog, Malibu, misses her so much too! Jenny and Dale H.

Daytona joined her forever family last nite. We love you baby girl and will always remember your gentle spirit, golden burritos and re-decorating talent.

Hi Everyone,
It's been another busy weekend. Yesterday, FD, FM and me escaped in the Escape to Woodbury PetCo for an adoption event. There were a million dogs there. Ok, maybe not that many but there were alot.
I met a bunch of people that would like to adopt me. They had a physical fence but no resident dog or else they had a dog, but no fence. Unfortunately I need both. I met all of the dogs and was a very good girl. I only had a a teeny little problem with one dog, my sister. She gets in a little snit whenever she sees me.
Oh, well Mom always did like her the best.
Check out the prime dog buffet. WOW!! I sneaked in for a bite and got caught. Is that camera always attached to FM. Don't worry, she paid for my snack and I got in trouble too.
Speaking of snacks, I sure hope everyone buys Girl Scout cookies this year. They came to meet us at PetCo and brought every RAGOM dog presents. There were beautiful, warm homemade blankets and toys and treats and bowls. I love presents. FM picked out a blanket and a new Kong for me and Meg. What a special troop to think about us and donate all this wonderful stuff.

Hi Everybody,
Daytona here. I'm sure having a good time. I have to mention something that FM forgot to tell you about. I went on a home visit a week ago to the family's house that we met at Chuck and Don's. I would love to live with them. The good news is that they have a boy that they call "chew toy". How fun would that be? A boy toy that chases and plays tug a war and throws the ball. Koooooool. So anyway, they came to see me again at PetSmart. That's the good news. The bad news is that they are thinking about adopting a puppy.
And a special "Thank You" to Lauren for my photo at PetSmart.
So, my search for a forever family continues. Until then I'm weighing my options. FM says a girl should never divulge her real weight. Heck, I just wanted to take a little rest. Besides, I've gained 6 lbs. since I got here and I'm looking pretty darn good.
Word around here is that I am almost ready to have free roam during the day. FM forgot to latch the crate yesterday morning. I was out and about in the house all day. And I was a very good girl, sort of. I'm not finding things anymore. I just move stuff into the center of the room and make a little nest. FD came home first and found the 4 couch throw pillows and the 2 crate blankets on the floor. But I didn't do anything to them. FD and FM laughed when they saw that.
We went on another home visit last nite. I'm getting used to them now. I'm very good in the car, too. I just sit in the front or go to the back seat and take a nap.

I have a feeling it's going to be a "Golden" year for me. My new year's resolution is to be the best girl I can be and to find a forever family. Actually, the start of that is a done deal. As for the second part, that's going to be up to you. So, I'm thinking if FM keeps writing about me and sends in photos, someone out there will see me and just know that I am perfect for their family.
This is Meg & me and Miguel. He's just a big goofy puppy. I think he was just nervous the first couple days with us foxy redheads and MiMi. He's settled down a lot.
We have a peaceful kingdom again.
Notice MiMi's paws are crossed that everyone has a GReat time in 2009, especially Annie and all of the dogs & puppies on our website. I'm trying not to step on Meg so I can play with MiMi...

Hey everyone,
The goldens are napping and it's my turn to write about Daytona. She has grown so much emotionally and physically. She hasn't "found" anything for a long time and settled in very well. We have our routines set and she has adapted to everything. It's been so rewarding to see her transform from a shy, frightened, submissive dog to the confident, playful, funny, stubborn, loving relaxed golden she is meant to be. Daytona is practically perfect.
We have another nitely routine I have to share with you. To develop a bond with her, I started holding and stroking her paw at bedtime. She pulled away at first and moved to the end of the bed. Now she gives me her paw, washes my face with kisses and we settle in for the nite. She has accepted trust and love.
It will be extremely hard for her to leave. We've even been talking about adopting her ourselves. The time isn't right for us now. She is still available for adoption and looking for her forever family.
The ideal home for Daytona will have:
- Fireplace to cuddle in front of (we don't have one)
- Another dog and cat (cat optional). Dog is a must have.
- Physical fence (large yard preferred) but not mandatory
- Kids (optional)
- She needs to sleep with you
- Infinite LTTTA (see 12/19/08-minimal treats to keep her golden figure)
- Foster family visitation rights

Hi everyone,
It's me, Daytona. Hope you had a Golden Christmas. Here are me and Meg spreading the Joy of the Christmas season.
FM likes us to have a peaceful kingdom here. Just us girls enjoying a lazy winter day.
And sometimes no matter how hard I try, I just can't wake up Meg.
We have a visiting Golden boy, Miguel. He'll be here for a week. He's almost one year old and all the way from Michigan, wherever that is. All he wants to do is play play play and bark. Meg & I are exhausted.
And sometimes no matter how hard I try, I just can't get Meg interested in playtime. But we are having a lot of fun with him.
I've been on a couple home visits with FM. Those are wonderful. I get lots of pets and love. Every place we go they want to adopt me but they don't have fences. Because I'm from a puppy mill, I really need a physical fence. An electronic one isn't a good idea. Because if I get loose, I probably wouldn't let anyone catch me, even if it's someone I love and trust. I would run so fast through it and then be afraid to come back.
Not much else is new, just the same Golden burritos with FM every morning. And Meg and I have been practicing all nite, too. Not sure where Miguel will fit on the bed. It's going to be very interesting sleeping arrangements tonite.

Hey everyone,
Not much is new. Meg & I did snow angels on the deck today. I love playing and running in the snow. It's been a GReat weekend for me.
And I LOVE, LOVE LOVE the golden coccoons Meg and I do to mom. In case you haven't heard of them. This is how it plays out. When FM is waking up and makes the slightest twitch, Meg and I don't let her get out of bed. I'm on her right side and Meg is on her left. It's really funny cause you know the first thing that people have to do when they wake up and we don't let her out of bed to do it. So, when we finally decide to let her up, then she runs to the bathroom and we get covered in kisses and hugs. On the weekends, we have another step to that first plan. She likes to go back to bed after doing her thing and so do Meg and me. We sleep back to back and leave FM about 6 inches to squeeze under the covers between us. We don't budge an inch. No offense, FM but you need a lot more than that. Finally, after she squishes in, we all go back to sleep for a couple more hours. So, I'm hoping my forever family lets me sleep with them, too. I'm an excellent back and/or feet warmer which is really GReat for the winters. You can turn the thermometer down and I'll turn mine up.
I've been very good. I haven't been tempted to chew shoes or the couch pillows for a long time. I did find FD's "fruit of the looms" the other day. Unfortunately,those are history.
I'm really good about going in my crate when they leave. And I'm confident that my forever family will be able to trust me with free roam after a short time. On the other paw, daytime crate life isn't so bad. I have a toy filled with treats to keep me busy and Meg & MiMi keep me company.
My spay scar is invisible and my hair is growing back. Don't let my short tail bother you. I don't sweep stuff off tables or shelves even though its constantly thumping and shaking now.
Is it my imagination or am I looking more like a golden golden? Hanging out with Meg is GReat, but I didn't think her color would rub off on me. Compare this pic to when I first was rescued.
Must be the special Golden Retriever food.

Hey All,
I got spayed Tuesday and now I'm really ready to find my forever family. FM made me wear this shirt for a couple days so I wouldn't bother my incision. It's embarrasing. This is not my happy face.
Then she wrapped my tummy with a long stretchy band over the shirt and I kept both on like a very good girl all day yesterday. I have to say I was sorta glad I had that on cause my belly gets cold. It's baby baby bottom smooth. But, now I have to start growing my golden feathers all over again. Hope that grows as fast as my nails do. Those got clipped real short, too. My tummy is a little sore but that's not stopping me from playtime with Meg. We decided to de-stuff my spay present, Lambchop.
I want to thank my foster sisters for their support while I'm recovering. Meg stays right next to my crate all day and MiMi sleeps on top of it. My first nite home, Mimi kept close watch over me when I was snoozing.
Isn't she adorable? I hope my new family has a cat. Wow, betcha can't believe a dog said that.
Saturday I'm going to a RAGOM meeting. Maybe I'll catch up with some of the dogs I used to live with and get lots of attention from the other volunteers. I'm all for hugs and treats now that I understand them.
Just to let you know, I'm getting used to sleeping on the whole bed, not just at the end. Sometimes FM lets me share her pillow and I stay put all nite. I'm not a mover and shaker like some dogs. Once I find a comfy place, I stay there all night. Best of all, I double as a back heater, too.
I almost forgot to mention that I have a bit of an icky ear. Something about my ear having yeast in it. I'm getting some oily stuff for that and it will be better real soon. The vet said my heart is good and everything else is in GReat shape. It's even okay to gain a couple more pounds. And with the holidays coming up, I don't think I'll have a problem with that.....hint, hint FM.

Hi everyone,
Thought I would jump on here for a bit while FM plays hookey (ooops, I mean rests at home) and takes care of her cold.
Not much is new since the last update except Murphy (he's a schnoodle) came for the weekend. He is fast like a silver bullet and fun to play with.
MiMi had to stay with Aunt Jan when he was here cause he kills rabbits and we don't want to take a chance on losing MiMi. So here's a joke that FM told us. Who delivers Christmas presents to Dogs? "SANTA PAWS." Is that dumb or what? Obviously Meg thought it was funny.
I've been very good except for testing lamp cords wires and throw pillows. Those couple times got me in BIG trouble. I haven't seen any shoes lying around so I've been good with that. I haven't been laying in the window since the last update. It's more comfortable on the couch.
And at nite I'm accustomed to sleeping with FM. I curl up at the end of the bed and stay there till breakfast at 6:00 AM.
I'm learning new phrases: "play in big yard", "drop it", "go up", "get outta there", "get in here." But, my favorite is "go to bed" cause that's when I get FM all to myself.
My spay (whatever that is) will happen next week. And then, I'll be ready for my forever family. As much as I love it here, I need to move on so that another RAGOM dog can call this home for awhile. I'll be someone's Christmas present and Meg will mentor another dog so the RAGOM cycle will continue. Don't you just love it when all goes as planned? Here I am waiting for you?
This is me during the first snow fall (not flaky skin). My tummy feathering is getting longer, but unfortunately my tail will stay short, so you don't have to worry about it swinging and breaking stuff. I'll give you an update after my spay next week.

Hey everyone,
This has been a GReat week. I have learned so much from Meg and my foster parents. I LOVE being a RAGOM girl. Yesterday I went to the vet for my ultrasound. They didn't find anything growing in my tummy, but she said it's too soon to know for sure. So, I'm scheduled to be spayed in a couple weeks. We'll know if I'm preggers by then. Paws crossed that I'm not. MiMi came too. She got microchipped. I confess that I've helped her escape a couple times. She wants to play outside with me and Meg, so I just open the sliding screen door and let her out and we have fun on the deck. I guess that wasn't a good idea. Almost gave FD a stroke. So now they have to lock the door or close the inside one. Kinda gives a whole new spin to partner in crime.
Let's see, what else? Oh yea. I've discovered "the bed". Meg and I make a sandwich with FM in the middle. And when she wakes up and starts petting me, then I cover her in kisses. I only do that in the dark, though.
I've been eating really good food and it shows cause I've gained 3 lbs. in the 3 weeks I've been here and Dr. said it's ok if I gain 5 more.
We went to the Petco event today. A big shout out to Sheila R. that came out special to see me and to Linda M. and Lindsey. And the fur butts Scooby, Cowgirl, Jake, Sammy, Bella, Rudy, Sam, Sophia, Laycee, Saia, Skippy, Landon, Madison, Champ, Sadie, Sara and everyone else. That was so much fun seeing other fur butts like me. I hope I met my forever family today. We'll just have to wait and see.
FM forgot to include the this picture with my update last week. She also forgot to mention that I LOVE kids. No offense, FM, but you forget a lot of stuff.
Ok, I am one pooped pup right now. But I'll have sweet dreams of my big day today. Paws crossed for Porter and KayCee.

Hi,
I'm sneaking in to do Dayton'a update while she is outside for a couple minutes. We went for a quick walk Saturday. Have you ever tried to break a pony? Daytona obviously had never been on a leash or walk before. She was teathered with a Gentle Leader. I should have strapped a pedometer on her. She walked 4 times farther than us. We cut it short because of her bucking and jumping and spinning.
Evidently all that excitement took its toll on her. She napped all day Sunday.

It took some coaxing and patience, cause she was a scared little 55# puppy.

Helllllroooooo,Just wanted to tell everyone that I am 500% housetrained. That is the best news ever. We are working on keeping a safe house. In other words, no pillow, shoe or boot is safe when I'm here. FM put a shoe rack in the bedroom and has a robe covering all the shoes. FD put his boots and shoes in a closet. And they keep the couch cushions on the table at nite. I have a passion for leather and rubber and cushy stuff, what can I say? On the positive side, I haven't shredded any paper in a couple days. So there you have it, typical puppy mill behavior. I'm trying to be good. It will just take a little time and I'll be the bestest dog when I grow up.

I'm doing my update again so FM can sleep in. Wow, what difference a week makes. I am feeling so much better. My ear infection is completely gone. I'm done with my de-worming stuff. I'm eating whats in my dish (all of it) unless I share a couple pieces with MiMi. I'm enjoying the heck out of playing with toys and my foster sisters. And I'm getting used to face kisses. I don't have an option there. Just look at my beautiful face and try to resist kissing it.
I especially love it when Meg and I tear around the yard like race cars. Well, hello....my name is Daytona and I'm #500, of course I'm going to be fast. I bet you are wondering how I got that name. At the time of rescue, I was the 500th dog this year that has joined this wonderful volunteer organization. While I think that's an honor, it's very sad and unfortunate there are so many dogs that need help for reasons like mine or other sad situations. It's GReat to know RAGOM and other rescues are there for us. Foster mom says this is the best volunteer job in the whole world. That has my vote.
Speaking of voting, I hope you are clicking at the top of my page to vote for RAGOM. We could win $100,000 and then everyone would know that we are the GReatest rescue group in the nation. How cool would that be? That would pay for maybe 5 months of RAGOM vet bills and boarding. So, back to my new golden life story. There haven't been any surprises from my end in a whole week (if you know what I mean). I have free roam at nite and can go anywhere upstairs that I want except the bathroom. During the day I'm crated because I can be kind of nosy and "find" things. And before I go too far, I want to publicly apologize to MiMi for de-stuffing her pillow. In my defense, I thought I would protect her from all those monkies that were on it. Actually MiMi, FM never got the chance to give it to you because I "found" it....Sorry about that.
I also want to share with you that not once have Meg and I had an argument or unkind words. I'm always watching her and learning what to do and not to do. We are best friends and foster sisters. Doesn't get any better than that. So, since this is working out so well, I think I should have another dog to live with when I am adopted and maybe even a cat.
I have to tell you a fun story. When I wasn't eating very much last week, FM pulled a can out of the fridge and held it over Meg's head and some white stuff dripped down on her. That was really weird. But Meg sure enjoyed it so I tried it. YUuummM! Then MiMi wanted to check it out, too. So there we sat, climbing up the column of white stuff. FM & FD were laughing so hard, we almost had a food fight. They said we looked like EENIE, MINEE and MOE slurping up whipped cream. Don't get excited, we didn't get too much. Just enough to perk up my appetite and guess what, it worked. So, I'm hoping next time there might be a little taste of pie to go with it............hmmmmmm. Gotta love those humans.
And I'm learning lots of words. NO is a little word, but it has BIG meaning. I hear that one a lot. Another favorite word around here is DOWN. As a matter of fact, I think those are my two last names. Daytona NO and Daytona DOWN. My most favorite last names are GOOD GIRL and TREAT. I'm hearing those more often now.

I have a vet appointment for an ultra sound scheduled on Howlween. Hope they don't find anything scarey. I don't want to be a mom again. That would be frightful. Ooops, I almost forgot to tell you that I did my first home visit. And it was very special because they want to foster and help other dogs like me find their forever home. I did a very good job and got tons of belly rubs and strokes. Now I really really have to go. Thanks again and enjoy the GReat weekend.
