Jack arrived in Hartley on Saturday and is a tall and muscular golden. I would put him at 90 pounds. He also arrived with a bum leg, so we will get x-rays and see what's going on with it. He is already neutered and so he will be microchipped and updated on shots when we go to the vet. At this time I would recommend that he goes to a home with older children. Will post more later after we find things out.

Dear Ragom,

On Tuesday, April 2, 2013, our dear friend Jack passed away. He came to us in June of 2008 and stole our hearts immediately. He was a loyal friend, an avid camper and daily walker, and loving protector of our now nine-year-old son. We miss him so much but know that he is now pain free.

Here is a wonderful picture of his handsome and quiet nature on his last camping trip in August of 2012.

I walked a heck of a lot this last week. The walks were great… although I was sore for a day after playing hard with Skoey one afternoon. I met a few new people last week and a couple of them thought I was two or three years old for the way I played and looked. We told them I was seven and they about flipped! I’ve been walking up some steep hills and I can keep up with Skoey. In fact, Skoey has problems keeping up with me and he just turned two years old. I love my walks. I especially like it when one of them will walk Skoey and me and it’s the three of us. We’re easy to control if only one person is able to take us at a time. We get compliments all the time on how great we look together.

The ducks from the pond have been in the yard here and I like to watch them. I also like to watch the rabbits. It’s the squirrels that bother me. They tease me all the time by running on the fence onto the low tree branches and “bark” at me to come and chase them. I did at one time but I never have gotten one so what’s the point???? Yet the squirrels still tease me day in and day out. I do enjoy my time outside. They have a dog house outside that I take naps in while Skoey suns on the deck. I like the doghouse cuz it stays cool for me. They only keep me out there for so long. I don’t like coming back in sometimes but they make me.

I got groomed last week. I got a bath and a haircut. They took pictures of me to put on the site. I didn’t want to put them up (I’m modest) but they made me. The groomer said I was such a good boy. I don’t mind baths or haircuts one bit. They all liked me there and said to come back. I also got my nails trimmed but my fosters had been doing that awhile and the nail trims don’t bother me either.

Today we all went to a park in Lakeville. I just had a blast. I am truly a hunter. Whenever I’m on a scent I do this cute dance and turn around. I get so excited but it’s not in an overbearing way. There is nothing I like more than hanging out in parks and meeting new people and dogs. Well, I guess swimming is tops but they wouldn’t take me this week cuz I just had a bath. They promised in the next two weeks I’ll get to go swimming and I can’t wait for that. I also love car rides. I’m real good in the car. I love to have my head out the window but they won’t let me do that much because they say it’s not good for me whatever that means.

Well, I guess that’s it for now. I’ve had such a wonderful time and they tell me they’re going to find me a fantastic home because I deserve it. They say they have another family that they are going to call today or tomorrow, so if you are interested in seeing me, or think you have room in your house for me, please let RAGOM know, I need to find a forever home.

This week went by real fast for me. I’ve been getting 2 walks a day and doing more physical therapy. These people are working me to the bone (ok, my ligament, not bone). I do exercising several times a day. The worst one is when they lift a good leg of mine so I MUST stand on my injured one. They have figured out that I’m tricky sometimes and I can stand on TWO legs. Isn’t that a neat trick? They no longer let me get away with that one though. If I play with Skoey, I use my injured leg without even knowing it. I’m in pain once in awhile so I’m still on pain medication. I know that I’m going to eventually recover. It’s just going to take me some time. Thank goodness the shaved hair is coming back nicely. I finished all my normal RAGOM vet tests, and I am very healthy.

I just got back from one of my walks. We live across from a pond so I see ducks, geese, and muskrats daily and I LOVE the noises, but even the smells MORE. I walked by a cat today that was laying in the yard down the street. He and I just watched each other. I think it’s the same cat I saw last week that was in our yard. I chased him out. This time I didn’t do anything.

There are so many dogs in the neighborhood that I see every day. If one barks at me, I don’t like to go near it but would rather get away from the action. If I feel that my foster is taking me near a barking dog, I’ll sit right there and move no farther. I do enjoy other dogs. I just get timid of the barking ones if I’m unsure of what they’re barking about.

My foster parents are continuing to work on manners with me. I don’t like to listen sometimes and I can be stubborn. It’s in situations such as; I am on the bed and I won’t get off of it at night sometimes. I stay well, but I don’t like to be told to lie down. And they’re TRYING to change that. We’ll see where that goes. I do know my basic commands. They just expect a lot from me and they say that they have with all of their foster dogs. I’m working on NOT begging for table scraps. They even have Skoey trained not to beg and I have no idea how he does it. I gotta get some tips from him. I don’t know why I need so many manners but I do what I’m told if they get persistent enough. I’m not aggressive, mean, or anything. I just like to do things my way. They tell me, “That ain’t going to happen.”

We had a guest stay for a few days. It went real well. She just loved me. I’m oblivious to visitors who walk into the door. I get many compliments about my behaviors toward them. Anyways, they told me they considered the visiting guest just one of my tests that I passed with flying colors.

Well, I gotta do my stretches now. I’ll be looking for a home soon. I’m sure it’ll take some time before I’m ready. They want me to have no problem using my leg before I’m adopted out. That’s fine with me. I love this place. What gets better than TWO walks a day and a very big yard with trees to play in daily????

Hi, my name is Jack. I have never written one of my updates before, my past fosters did those, as I was fairly drugged up from my surgery the past few weeks. I arrived at my new long term foster family this week, so I have a lot to say (I do talk a lot).

I really need to thank RAGOM for taking care of me and giving me a ligament surgery that I had to have. I am really grateful that RAGOM saved my life. Being able to use my leg is all new to me since I hadn’t been using it before my surgery for a period of time. My vet told me I need to get used to using it because it’s going to be ok now. That’s all I need to remember. I am using my leg more than ever now. My foster parents are doing physical therapy and walk with me several times a day. I’m told I’ll be as good as new. I’ll remind my parents to update the progress on my leg including pictures, because my hair is coming back already!

Skoey is their resident and he’s been helping me as well. Skoey gives me plenty of space but I cannot help myself from playing with him. If I want something he lets me have it. We love playing tug of war with the games around here. They tell me it’s unreal that I’m seven years old because they think I act younger than my years.

My foster parents are also working on manners with me. I listen well most of the time but I can be stubborn. They think they can change that, we’ll see where that goes. I think my foster family has high standards for listening and behaving, but they say that they have those with all of their foster dogs. They say I am a really good dog, so I’m going to try real hard to learn from them.

I enjoy meeting new dogs. I met the Shepard/Rottie mix next door who is also named Jack and we say hello now and then. I haven’t been aggressive to any of the dogs I have met here yet. They tell me they know many dogs and I’ll get to meet them soon enough….when my leg is up to par. They only allow so much time to play with Skoey because they want to make sure I don’t overdo it. They treat me like I’m a child of theirs. I’ll let you know how things are going next week, but this last week was very nice. I like it here.

Notice the freckles on my face. Aren’t they sweet? How many dogs do you see who have white freckles on their face? Don’t you want a unique dog? I am very unique, just look at my freckles!

Jack went to the vet on Monday and he has a torn ACL in his left rear leg. He was examined by the vet and is healthy otherwise, but could stand to lose 10 pounds as he weighed in at 90 pounds. Jack has the cutest freckles on his nose. Jack was a little growly with our toddler the first few days, and we were gone or working Monday and Tuesday most of the day so he wasn't around him. Today we let him out with him and he is totally changed which I feel is just not being in as much pain, the vet gave him some pain pills to take the edge off. He is getting up a little easier and acts more comfortable.

This will be the last update on him from us as Saturday he is going back North to be checked at ACH in preparation for whatever they feel will be best for his knee. Good Luck Jack we will miss your big puppy kisses.
