Tessa's new life began about 5:30 AM on Sunday September 2 when a fine team of RAGOM transport volunteers (Beryl, Susan, Marie and Foster Dad) arrived to bring back her and 12 other Puppy Mill dogs.  The day was long with additional stops along the way to pick up additional dogs and to deliver foster dogs in Ames and Owatanna.  The reward of arriving at the Golden Valley Animal Humane Society at 8:30 PM only to be greeted by a throng of other wonderful RAGOM volunteers was so truly golden.  Thank You RAGOM special people for the start of my new life!!!

Tessa just turned 1 on July 26.  She weighed in just under 50 pounds.  Like many of the Puppy Mills dogs she is under weight and had fleas and ticks.  She was bathed and given medication to protect against further fleas and ticks.  She will be brought in for a Vet check for ear infections, teeth cleaned and to be spayed. 

Tessa has the traits of a Puppy Mill and crouches close to the ground, she is startled easily by loud noises and fast movements.  With the help of Indy (07-253 Jacinda) another former Puppy Mill girl Tessa will soon learn the way of a new Golden life.  She has already given me a few little kisses and she is starting to follow me around in the house and the yard, that is when Indy drops hold of the trailing lead.  Tessa is young and resilient and hopefully over time the nasty scars on her face will fade as the memories of her former Puppy Mill life does as well.

It's Tessa Love #07-527, just wanted to say Hello! I have been with Jaci & Jeff since 1-11-2008, it's been a blast. I am very happy to have found this family. I did have a big brother Jack until March 21, 2014, he was 14 1/2 & went to doggie Heaven. He was amazing and lived a great life like I have been too, but it's time for another brother. My family Jaci & Jeff are looking at dogs right now at Ragom. I am excited and so are they too. Thanks again for saving me Ragom and having Kelly B, as the coolest foster dad too. Doggie kisses to all the amazing people at Ragom for caring for us Golden's and finding us great families like Jaci & Jeff. We will be seeing someone soon! Tessa wants to wish her generous sponsor, Kathy G., and all of her RAGOM fans a Joyous Holiday Season!   Foster Dad can say that she has been such a good girl, which would explain her overstuffed stocking.  She listens so well and is always near me to give me her paw, hugs, and kisses.   Tessa continues to evolve into a more normal dog as the weeks have no turned into months since she was set free from the puppy mill.  She is slowly starting to play more with the rest of the pack.  This morning I witnessed her wrestling in the new snow with Indy (07-253).  I thought I could get a few new pictures of the dogs making "snow angels" but they were far to busy chasing and wrestling each other for that.   Tessa is now up to 51.5 pounds and her coat is so soft and shiny.  She has been fed a blend of dry kibble and canned food to help her gain some much needed weight.    Tessa's New Years Resolution is to find a furrever home with the following:   A family to love her as much as foster dad. A furr brother or sister to continue her education/training in being a good dog. Tessa has come back to her foster dad due to issues related to her puppy mill upbringing. We now know that a forever home for Tessa will need the following:  
  Another dog to show her the ropes and to be her mentor. A fenced in yard to learn how to play. A home without small children (age 8 and older). Someone with lots of love and patience to bestow on this sweet ex-puppy mill girl. Tessa is small for a golden and weighs just under 50 pounds. She has shorter hair with some feathering coming in. With high quality food we hope to have her gain a little weight and improve her furr coat. Thank you RAGOM for helping out this ex-puppy mill girl. Tessa enjoyed meeting many people and potential forever families last Saturday at Chuck & Don's in Eagan.  She enjoyed seeing the many other RAGOM dogs and their fine fosters.   It is hard to believe that she has been a RAGOM dog now for just over 7 weeks.  Tessa is super sweet and a very quiet girl.  She tends to be a velcro dog at times and other times is very independent, after all a good girl has that right.  We have started to feed her a blend of canned food along with her dry kibble in order to help her gain just a few pounds.  It also helps to keep the three resident dogs away from her so Tessa can enjoy her fine canine cuisine in peace.   Tessa is a love bug and a great snuggler on those cool fall mornings.  She also loves to give me little hugs while I try to write these weekly updates.  She is gentle about giving me her hugs and putting her paw up for some additional attention.   Outside she is always on the move in the backyard exploring the smells and sounds.  She sometimes chases after the ball with her fur pals in the yard.  Inside the house she has learned to steal the tennis ball or squeaky toy away from Dakota (resident cocker spaniel who is ball OCD).  She has even started to play tug of war with a knotted rope with Indy (07-253).  Tessa gets many praises for these moves!   Tessa is a rescued puppy mill dog though she is not perfect she is very quickly learning to be a GReat dog.  She enjoys her walks in the evening (when it isn't raining) and is so very good with the Gentle Leader.  If you want to know more above love bug Tessa, please contact placementatragom [dot] org.

Another week and it is so much fun to see little Tessa and some of her new adventures.  She is just starting to show some interest in toys.  She has started to pick up the tennis ball but does not know what to do with it for very long.  She will also grab some of the stuffed toys and bring them to her den (which could be her crate, the couch or even to her pet bed).    She has visited Foster Dad's nephews and niece this past weekend.  Tessa did very well with the five nephews and one niece (ages 4-13)  My niece really liked Tessa and helped walk her along with her fur buds.  Tessa could teach the resident dogs the proper way to walk and heel :)  We use the Gentle Leader to insure that we can keep her in control should we encounter a rabbit or squirrel on our walks.  I periodically check to make sure that Tessa is still there and has not come loose from the tether or Gentle Leader.  She really is a champion at walking with both her head and tail up high.   Tessa's dog manners continue to improve.  She has quickly learned to no longer do a standing greet. She is allowed to move about most of the house during the day with the exception of a few rooms that are baby gated which she respects.  There have been only a few potty accidents, even when foster dad was late getting home.  There have been a few toys de-stuffed as well as one pet bed (which really did resemble a teenage pillow fight/slumber party).  I believe that Tessa likely had an accomplice to this feat with her buddy Indy (07-253).   Tessa's ideal forever home would have:     A fenced yard (physical or invisible)     A family with lots of love and patience to help her become a GReat dog.  Someone to guide her through further obedience classes to give her the best dog manners.     If possible another dog to become her mentor and buddy.   If you would like to meet Tessa the love bug, please contact placementatragom [dot] org

Tessa will be at the annual RAGOM picnic this Saturday 9/22/07 for you to come and meet in the fur.  We just returned from our lake home and you be the judge of the latest pictures.  Who is more beautiful, Tessa or the small red maple tree?   Tessa is a real happy girl.  Her tail is usually a wagging and thumping away, complimenting her big pearly white smile.  She has settled in very nicely and travels so well in long car rides!  She loves to be near me and gets along great with her fur buds (Indy 07-253 and Shelby).  She did take an unplanned swim in the lake.  I was bailing water out of the boat and she some how fell off the dock while no one else or any other dog was remotely close to her.  She swam like a true champ right to shore and shook herself off, while the rest of us laughed under our breath!   Tessa walks great with a Gentle Leader, or with a tether to her collar.  She is a very gentle girl and learns very quickly.  We are still working on some better dog manners like down and sit.  If you are interested in meeting Tessa please join us at the RAGOM picnic on Saturday, or contact your placement advisor at:  placementatragom [dot] org
