4/2/07: Let me introduce you to this sweet little female named Sara!  She is one of almost 100 hundred dogs and puppies rescued from a closed down puppymill in North Dakota.  Sara has some of the typical puppymill issues that are characteristic of a dog that has little or no experience with anything but the dogs she lived with. She is uncertain of humans but does love to be petted and she melts your heart when she leans her head into your body and closes her eyes as you pet her.

Sara will need some time to feel safe around humans, but she is well on her way, as she is taking baby steps every day.  She is a joy to have around AND did I say she is also a BEAUTY!!!!  Sara is a light golden in color and a little shorter than most of the Goldens that I have fostered.  When she makes her trip to the vet, hopefully we will get a better idea of her age, weight and health.  She could also be pregnant, but we might have to wait a while to find out.  Stay tuned to hear more about this Golden Beauty......

First off and most importantly, Richard and Betty D., thank you so very much for sponsoring our little Sara - she is the sweetest little girl !!!  You'll be happy to hear that she went to the vet on Monday afternoon; had a checkup, a heartworm test and a microchip implanted.  Her vet visit had to be changed to this Monday as the vet went home sick on last Thursday.  The vet visit went pretty well; Sara did try to hide behind me which isn't surprising, but once Dr. Sandra started checking her over Sara did relax a little bit.  The vet could not feel any puppies, the heartworm test came back negative, and the big needle for the microchip didn't even phase her.  We will go back in a couple of weeks to check again for puppies - if there are no puppies, then Sara will get caught up on her shots and an appointment will be made for her spay.  Sara and her foster sister, Kalli 07-172, met new people yesterday.  They got loved up and hugged by a couple of new vet techs that wanted to come in the room with us and sit on the floor by the dogs.  The girls, Sara and Kalli, were more than happy to sit and be lavished on with pets and praises!!!!

I had a rather adventurous trip in and out of the vet's office yesterday.  I thought I would try out some harnesses on the girls and also used a Y attachment so they could walk together on one leash.  It went fine until someone walked out of the vet office while we were walking up to it.  Of course, the girls had to run behind me to be safe and then each of them wanted to walk on either side of me.  With the Y attachment that gave them just enough room so each could be on one side of me with the Y behind me, trying to trip me from the back!!   This was not a good idea for their first day out together - luckily I remained unharmed even though they did try to trip me up several times!

Lucky little Sara got to be on the front page of our local newspaper yesterday.  A news reporter came over last week and interviewed me,  met Sara and took some pictures - and low and behold we made the front page!!!  It was a wonderful story, if you would like to read about it, click on this link:  http://www.virginiamn.com/archives/Story.php?story_id=208659&search_link_string=Puppy+mill+refugees.  Unfortunately it is in the archives already so they didn't have any pictures with the story.

Sara is doing well and progressing daily.  A couple of days ago a local newspaper reporter and photographer came over to see Sara and learn more about RAGOM.   Sara seemed to have more interest in the male photographer than in the female reporter, probably because her former owner was male.  She had her picture taken and did hang around me for most of the interview - of course I was petting her!!!  I was very proud of her, as she was very brave and did not go hide behind the recliner when new people were here.  Today we are heading to a family gathering to celebrate the holiday, so Sara again will get to meet new people and she'll be guaranteed to get lots of pets.  Sara needs a lot of this interaction with humans so she becomes more comfortable around them; some of the puppymill dogs are not ready for this step but our little Sara is - so off we go with a new adventure for her!
