Abbey came into our lives in the spring of 2001. It was the first time we had heard of RAGOM and it made a lot of sense of to adopt a companion that wasn't right for someone else. She was perfect for us. Her high energy level would put the energizer bunny to shame. Absolutely no contest. That actually was her original issue. She had originally been purchased to become a helping paws dog for a gentleman whom was wheelchair-bound. She was a great companion, but not such a good student. She had difficulty learning the requisite skills, she just had too much get-up-and-go. Dan Ruzek was the foster that introduced us to Abigail. We cannot thank him enough. Without being a mother, Abbey used her female instincts to teach another RAGOM dog, Cheyenne, to drink water from a pool. You see, Cheyenne had been born and raised in a standard crate, and was accustomed to a watering tube, not a bowl (but that's another wonderful story.) Abbey enjoyed our vacation trips to the north shore and would occasionally take a short swim in the ice water. She got along quite well with all of the dogs that we met out at the Lake Sarah dog park and enjoyed all of the walks. This last Friday, she started to have severe convulsions and on Saturday she went to the vet to get some medications. The meds didn't seem to do the trick as she got worse on Sunday. On Monday we knew it was time to let her cross over the Rainbow Bridge. It was no longer fair for us to want to keep her with us. She is now probably running with Cheyenne, Kirby, Maggie and lots of other beautiful Goldens. All with endless squirrels and tennis balls to chase.
