Antic 02-108

Profile

Antic 02-108 is one of Daisy's April Fools.  Antic is black with lots of white on his chest and paws.  Structurally, he is one of the bigger pups in the litter.  He is quite a character.  Antic is the first pup to beg for scratching and petting.  He loves it soo much, he will lean into your hand and just ooze right over onto his back for a tummy rub.  Truly a 'Golden" personality...

Baxter (Antic 02-108) 14, died peacefully at home on April 17, 2016, surrounded by his people Joe, Sunny, and Jeff, with some assistance from the good folks at the local veterinary clinic.  Bax's health had been in decline for a few years due to Cushing's disease and then arthritis.  He had a rough spell around Christmas of 2015 but rallied for a few more months like the tough guy he was.  In the end, he all but quit eating and had a very hard time walking, and the very difficult decision was made to let him go.

He was born in April 2002 in Minnesota to a RAGOM foster who surpised her hosts with a fine litter of mongrels.  He was one of Daisy's April Fool's Day litter.  Bax picked us in June 2002 and we flew with him back to our home in Petersburg in Southeast Alaska.  Bax spent his entire life in Alasks with us.  He was remarkably easy to train and was the perfect first dog for us.

Baxter most loved to be with his people and a few select two and four-legged friends.  He loved fishing local streams, warming up the tent, hiking local trails, and riding in his boat.  He loved guarding his own.  He loved little dogs, eating blueberries off the bush, hot dogs cooked on campfires, bunnies, leftover salmon, going mushroon hunting, chasing ravens, venison burgers, afternoon naps on his sofa, and going to work at his office every morning.

Baster did not like black bears, wolf packs that tried to get near his fishermen, moose, river otters, or sea linons.  He did not enjoy our nation's holiday, duck hunting, or other loud noises.  He did not like golden retrievers, especially boys that had the audacity to share his neighborhood.  He knew when his people were feeling down and he actively, intnetionally helped them back to the sunny side of life.

At the time of his death, Baxter was survived by at least one sibling - Hatch (02-110), good four-legged dog friends Farley and Henry, and his calico cat companion Spaz.  When Bax began to slow down he spent a lot of time on short walks around his neighborhood with Spaz (see Bax and Spaz on a winter hike here. He's survived by his people Joe and Sunny who miss him terribly, and good friends Jeff, Liz, Heidi, and Joe V.  Bax was preceded in death by four-legged girlfriends Riley, Lucy, Nika, Luna, Zoa, Lacey, Maggie Moo, and Leia; and his four-legged friends Japhy and Reximus.

We can't thank RAGOM enough for allowing us to spend 14 years with Baxter.  A few years ago when Bax's health declined we were able, with Debbie at RAGOM's assistance, to track down two of Bax's littermates - Hatch and Funnyman (Oreo).  These connections were a great comfort to us, espeically being able to meet Hatch (and Sue and Hank) in July 2016 after Bax's death.

We adopted Antic (02-108) in June 2002.  We named him Baxter and took him home to Petersburg, Alaska.  His foster family in Minnesota said that he’d end up being a 90 lb lap dog, and they were pretty much right.  He’s been the best guy and we’ve had lots of adventures together.  Bax has spent a lot of time fishing and pulling guard duty.  He’s spent a lot of time in the woods, and on rivers and streams.  He’s always stayed close, never bit fish, and has always watched our back.  I’ve attached afew pictures.  The first is from two years ago – Bax laying on the bank steelhead fishing, ever watchful.  The second was taken a year ago – Bax on the Blind River Rapids boardwalk.  The third is from this year – Bax and Sunny creekside in the spring.

Bax is hanging in there.  He turned 12 in April.  A couple years ago he started drinking tons of water. We feared that his kidneys were failing but we instead found out that Bax has Cushings disease.  It’s under control now with medication, but the Cushing’s was likely masking his arthritis, and that has now become an issue for him.  We can’t fish the big water with him anymore.  Instead we take slow walks around the block with the neighbor cat, and that’s just fine.   Bax would love to hear how his littermates are doing.  He was part of an April Fool litter – all of which (except for one puppy who died early) were adopted through RAGOM.   The boys had fool names (Antic, Funnyman, Hatch, Joker, and Jester) and the girls had spring names (April and Springtime).  His littermates can reach him at opsunjathotmail [dot] com or at 907-772-2321

Bax has brought us so much joy.  All of it wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of all the hard working folks involved with RAGOM.  Thank you so much.
