My experiences from the last two days convinced me that Annie's forever home must have a fenced yard...not that she is a "runner", but when she sees a rabbit, there is absolutely no stopping her!  Yesterday, she took off after a rabbit during our walk in the woods and this morning, she slipped out of her collar and came back only after she had sniffed and circled every bush and tree several times.  She is a young girl and needs more exercise than she can get on the end of a leash.

Now if it is warm today, she can do more water aerobics.  The other day (after I couldn't get Annie too excited about chasing a ball or Frisbee and knowing she is competitive), I threw a ball in the lake for her foster sister.  They both jumped in and it was soon apparent that Annie hadn't been in deep water before because she was pretty startled when she couldn't touch bottom (front legs high and lots of splashing).  But she hung in there, quickly found her rhythm and absolutely loved the water.  Then it was time for a nice, long nap.  Good girl!

Annie is a smart girl who will do well with some obedience training.  She has no bad habits--even tolerates me flushing and medicating her ears twice a day.  Good girl!

More next week...

Annie and foster sister, Murphy

Sunday, May 16, 2004

Annie has settled in beautifully.  When we got home on Thursday, she let her foster sister and brother (even the cat) check her out before she flopped down with a big sigh--almost like a sigh of relief.  She is so well behaved that I gave her free rein of the house immediately and no accidents.  Good girl!

We went to the vet on Saturday...she weighed in at 60 pounds--a bit thin and narrow, but that's to be expected after going (how long?) without a nutritious meal.  She was very calm and patient while being vaccinated, having her ears cleaned and treated for a low-grade infection, and even when she had her anal glands expressed.  Good girl!   When Annie and her two 12-week old pups were brought to the shelter, they were very dirty and loaded with wood ticks--so it was no surprise that she tested positive for lymes.  She may have some allergies (she sneezes/reverse sneezes), so we'll see if Doxycycline will knock off both the lymes and allergies.  Other than that, everything is perfect and she's scheduled for her spay on the 28th.  Good girl!

Annie loves both children and adults.  While I was walking her at the shelter, a group of Head Start children arrived to visit and she sat very nicely while about 25 rambunctious five-year olds crowded around to pet her.  Then she went over to the the teachers and made her wants known by sitting down right in front of them with tail wagging.   Good girl!

Today, we had a nice walk/run in the woods and she stayed real close--even though there were deer trails and lots of scents that must have tempted her.  Good girl!

Annie has pretty good manners, no counter-surfing, no separation anxiety, and will sit and lay with a little food motivation.  (We're working on stay.)  I think she is a vegetarian because she loves cheese, but turns her nose up at hot dogs.  Good girl!

More next week.
