Katie 06-350

Profile

8/11/06: Katie is a 4 month old purebred Golden Retriever. She had an injury to her right eye when she was 5 weeks old. It did not heal properly so Katie will be having surgery to remove that eye. The vet said yesterday that the dogs bounce back very quickly from having this eye surgery and in time she will learn how to hold her head so her field of vision is better. She does get playing and running out in the yard and sometimes does not look where she is going, but that is typical of a lot of puppies.

Katie is a beautiful puppy. She has a darker red coat and it has lots of waves. She has been settling in here for the last few days, and now has become more comfortable and more energetic. She loves exploring and finding new things to see. Right now she is teething, so we are keeping many chew toys available for her. She goes from toy to toy and chews for quite awhile at a time. I noticed a couple of her bottom molars were gone today, so she should be getting some new teeth in soon. She is a funny puppy because so far she won't eat peanut butter. I have put some in a Kong for her several times and she never touches it. I haven't ever had a dog refuse peanut butter.

Katie loves to play. She does play pretty rough with our resident dog and when Gabby gets tired of it, she just tells her off. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes, Gabby has to tell her more than once, that she doesn't want to play anymore. Katie is a typical 4 month old puppy that is full of bounce and energy. She does know sit pretty well as long as you can get her attention. Katie is used to being in a crate at night. She does bark for about 5 minutes to make sure we really did go to bed and it is quiet time. We have had no accidents in the house so far, but I do let her outside quite a bit. I don't let her run loose through the house at this point. If I have her on the carpet, she is on a leash with me as I don't want her to have any accidents. She is doing so well so far, I don't want to take two steps back.

Katie has not been around cats before she came here, so that is one thing that really gets her attention. We are working on her not chasing the cats, but so far we haven't made much of an impression with her. The cats appear to be far too much fun to chase and right now Katie is all for games to play. We will keep working on that as much as we can.

Katie had a great time playing in the pool today. I filled it up a little bit at first and she thought it was for drinking. I started throwing the Kong into the pool and it didn't take long before she was running in and out. She really likes sticking her face in the water and then running out fast. It was a beautiful day for a little puppy to take a dip.

Katie is all UTD on her shots and will have the eye surgery within the next couple of weeks. If you would love a very pretty girl that is full of energy and love to give, please email RAGOM at placementatragom [dot] org and let us know. She won't last long.

It is with great sorrow that I make this post. Yesterday my wife and I had to make the decision to have our beautiful 9.5 yr. old Golden Retriever Katie put to sleep. She had not been feeling well lately so we decided to bring her to the vet. Without going into all the details, she was diagnosed with a rare auto immune disease (and one other disease) and it was aggressively attacking her blood and the ability to clot. There were a few options but none of them good, so we decided to relieve her of her pain. We were able to spend 15-20 minutes with her before the doctor came in. She went to sleep peacefully and is now at the Rainbow Bridge, healthy and pain free. I believe even her right eye has been restored. She has brought unbelievable joy into our lives and without question, the best Golden we have ever had. There is a black cloud over our home today. Time will eventually heal our pain but it will take a while. Last night while I was watching TV I looked over to the small couch in our family room and saw a shadow of Katie about to jump up and hang out with me.....like she did almost every evening. Rest in peace my beautiful girl and thanks for being in our lives.

Hello,

It's coming up on Katie's 6th birthday and I thought I would provide an update.

Katie has been a fantastic dog from the day we adopted her. Like any pup, she did go through a chewing phase for a bit.

She continues to visit the local dog park almost every day and the phrase my wife uses when they are getting ready to leave is "It's Katie time!"

She has had to battle some health issues over the last year or so. She had two mast cell tumors removed (one on her chest and the other on her side). She took it like a trooper but is still a little scared when going to the vet's office. Like many goldens, she is battling hip dysplasia but medication and heating pad therapy from mom helps.

She is also a great traveler. We took her along on our trip to Red Lodge Montana and she did very well…..quite the little hiker too.

We love her so much that we modify things we possess the reflect our beautiful girl's face. Here is a photo of a club head cover and coffee mug (made by my wife).

I have also included a new photo of Katie as well. She always has to have a slipper, sock, shoe, glove, etc. with her. Never chews on them…..just wants to carry them around. She won't go to bed unless she has a sock to bring with her.

Thanks again so much to RAGOM and the volunteers for bringing Katie into our lives.

From Katie's forever family:

I just thought I would send you a photo of our lovely Katie that we adopted 2 years ago.

She is living life to the fullest every day. Her mother takes her to the off leash dog park EVERY day. She meets up with many of her pals and has a great time.

She is the 4th golden that we have had and without question, she is the best of all of them. She has a great personality, a calm and loving demeanor and loves to spend time with mom and dad.

The attached photo was taken by our good friend Kelsey. I modified it to black and white and colored in the tennis ball. The photo pretty much sums up her passion to play ball and swim.

Thanks to RAGOM for saving this beautiful pup.......we had lost both Jr. and Jazz in 2006 and thought we would never get another dog. Thank God we changed our minds and adopted Katie. She has been a tremendous blessing in our lives.

Thanks for all you do to save dogs and find them loving forever families.

Hi everyone. Katie's surgery went well yesterday so now she's on the road to recovery. Her eye lid has been sewn shut so it will be completely closed from now on.

I'm including some new pictures that were just taken today. One is with her buddy, Sadie. Unfortunately, we have to keep her calm for 14 days until the stiches can come out, as rough play may result in them coming undone before they're ready to come out. Even with just the one eye she seems to get around just fine.

She's a great girl and she would probably prefer to have another dog to play with who can teach her the ropes. Time for dinner. Good night!

Katie is doing great. She is a very sweet puppy and she gets an A+ with her house-training. We have had zero accidents in the house and she has been going to the door every once in awhile to let me know she wants out. We still crate her at night and she sleeps all night with no problems. Katie is just a "happy go lucky" little girl.

I took the kiddie pool out the other day and found out little Katie is definitely a water dog. She jumped in and out of the pool for hours. I threw her Kong and a little rubber ball into the pool. She puts her whole face under water to grab them. On Wednesday I took the pool out and she jumped in and sat down. She looked like she was trying to tell us to hurry up with the water. Katie looked so cute sitting in that pool waiting for us to get the water going.

Katie will have her eye surgery on Wednesday. I am sure she will be more comfortable after her bad eye is removed. Having one eye doesn't seem to slow her down one bit. She runs and plays and fetches the ball just fine.

If you are looking for a sweet, adorable puppy with a perfect Golden personality, please let us know.
