Duke 05-313

Profile

9/30/05: Duke is here in Minnesota, in a temporary foster home, and what a great dog he is. Duke is almost 2 years old, he has beautiful teeth and is all up-to-date with everything. The only thing he needs is to be chipped and he is good to go. He came all the way from Omaha, so he has had a long car ride today.

Duke is very playful, but settles well. He loves balls and other dogs, both male and female. The home he goes to can't have any cats. He is too interested in them. He has been hunting for the cats since he got here. I don't know what he would do if he caught one, but I prefer not to find out. He wants them so bad that he even snubbed his nose at some great food for about a 1/2 hour. He ate well, once he figured out that the kitties were not coming out into the open for awhile.

He is a beautiful darker red and has gorgeous dark brown eyes. He will let you handle his feet and loves a good belly rub. He knows a few commands - sit, down, shake. That's all I know so far. He is a keeper.

Duke wants a forever home, where he can run and play ball. He would like to have some kids to play with, too. Duke is just waiting to cuddle with YOU........

Sadly, we lost our beloved Duke on August 14th to nasal cancer. He declined rapidly and his death was a shock to us. Duke was very special to our family and he left 3 broken hearted boys (Max-15, Jake-12 & Andy-10). Our younger Golden, Dutch, still grieves for him and my husband and I still look for him next to our bed each morning.

Duke came to us on December 4, 2005. We we his second home in a short time after multiple foster homes. Duke was a runner and, despite our best efforts, he never completely reformed. He slowed down and his adventures became fewer, but even after surgery for a torn ACL, he still managed to sneak off from time to time. It took a neighborhood, security, the mailman, the UPS man and golf course maintenance, but Duke was always recovered swiftly and safely. Everybody knew him and loved him. He only made it our of our gated neighborhood once. That was scary.

He also didn't give up his habit of torturing cats. Twice, he treed cats in our yard requiring Fire Department rescues. Our vet made us call ahead so they could secure the kitties after Duke got close enough to get a mouth full of fur. He could smell one a mile a way!

We all have our faults. Duke more than made up for his with licks & love. I'm sure that every family tells you that their dog was the best one ever. Duke really was. Thank you for rescuing him and choosing us to be his forever home. Our lives are richer for having him.

I made this photo book for my boys.

Hi Cindy,

Thought you would like a Duke update. We decided to pass on a second dog (as you can see, the sofa in the playroom is full), but we found a buddy for Duke. Do you remember working with Anne H a few months back? Well she lives in my neighborhood and her Golden puppy is coming over for play dates 3 times a week. They have a ball and Anne and I are pleased with how tired they are. He’ll still go to doggy daycare some, but I love being able to look out the window and see him playing. He loves being out in the yard with Tucker or my boys, but doesn’t like being out there alone for very long. We are almost to the two month mark and Duke has settled in very well. His anxiety has lessened (still using the essences) and is manageable now. If he could speak, I think he would say he is very happy. He is still trying to get in the tub when the boys take a bath. They squirt him with their toys and get him wet – he loves it! He is a silly dog!

Hi, it's me, Duke! Mom finally got some good pictures of me... aren't I HANDSOME? I've been in foster care for a whole week already, and things have never been better for me! I got a microchip, some shots, and had a pesky seroma removed (that's fluid that formed in the space, you know, in my swimsuit area where some not-so-important stuff used to be). I also had a small benign cyst removed from my back. I don't know what that is, but mom's glad it's all good. Anywho, I'm all healthy and that's what counts.

I thought I'd tell you a bit about me. I love to be by people. Mom has this dumb gate up across the doorway to keep us dogs in certain parts of the house, but I've proved more than once that gates are meant to be scaled. She doesn't get very upset with me, because I guess those gates are more to keep that silly Teddy from chewing on things he shouldn't. Me, I don't mess with stuff unless it's specifically for me! Today mom let me outside to romp in the sunshine. I surprised everyone by breaking my collar and running like the wind blows. Since I was a very good boy and stayed in the yard, mom let me keep running around with Teddy. Whew... am I ready for bed early tonight after all that running! I love to play fetch and chew on sticks, besides running. I hope we'll get to be out there again tomorrow!

We got a new dog here today, and mom finally told me to LEAVE HIM ALONE. So, like the good boy I am, I'm leaving him alone already. I guess she didn't like me telling the new guy that she's MY mom... something about just being a guest and I need to mind my manners. Oh well. I'm off to get some shut eye... nighty-night!

Duke is probably 15-18 months old, and has the sweetest face I've ever seen. He met my 2 dogs without even a curled lip from any and has been playing with both ever since. Duke was found as a stray down in Nebraska and rescued by a good Samaritan who took him in but couldn't keep him. A sister Golden Retriever rescue in Nebraska couldn't find a foster home for Duke, so he was transported up to RAGOM. He has been vetted, neutered, is now UTD, and has received treatment for a staph infection. As with most strays, he has also received a de-worming treatment. Duke seems a bit thin at 63 pounds, maybe closer to 70 would be perfect for him. Duke is housetrained and knows some simple commands such as sit, down, and shake. He acts like a puppy when playing, but lays down quietly to rest after a bit. He has the most beautiful silky red coat that he loves to have brushed (I wish I had a knack for taking doggy pictures... Duke's coat is so much more beautiful in person than in the picture). He came to watch soccer games with us today, and was more than polite to dozens of folks who wanted to pet him. He stayed with one of our other fosters for a couple of days and was a little too enthusiastic about chasing her cats; therefore, Duke should go to a home without cats. If you think Duke would be perfect for you, please email placementatragom [dot] org and ask to meet him!
