Precious Tucker is all settled in his new home now. He found his favorite luxurious dog bed and made himself at home. His older sibling Gracie missed having a buddy, and she took to Tucker right away. She’ll be a great mentor to teach him the ropes.
The family keeps commenting on how sweet he is, and that it will just take time for him to really blossom, and they have all the time in the world for him. It’s pretty easy to fall in love with that boy! Please join me in wishing the family and Tucker the very, very best!

Greetings from Tucker! He’s been doing just great as he continues to settle into family life. I think he’s an old soul in a young dog’s body he is so mellow. When he is in the house he’s quiet and tends to spend all his time on his favorite dog bed, and the cat is usually lying next to him. This past week he changed it up a few times and got on one of the other beds. So he’s stretching his wings!
Tucker is a nature boy—he totally comes alive when he is outside. He marches right out to go potty, then stretches, and s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s, then will plop down and roll in the snow. He’s been regularly initiating play with the other dogs. He looks like a cartoon dog when he flops over to them (he’s all legs), and side checks them to engage. He is a very gentle player. He just loves his time outside, and that is when he’s the most relaxed.
We continue to go for lots of walks—at least two a day. We’ve been practicing walking in heel position and he does well with that. He’s getting the hang of taking small pit stops to do his business. He also likes the more “free” walks where he is on a long lead and has more latitude with his pace. We usually do these walks in a county park.
Today I took him and one of the other dogs to a county park we haven’t been to before. The trails were icy in spots but he did awesome. He has this nice relaxed bouncy gait, and he’s super easy to walk. He came home and passed out in his favorite bed! He loves getting in the truck to go somewhere, and he rides really well. When we go outside sometimes he’ll pull me toward the truck because he wants to go bye-bye.
One thing that has really changed this past week is his eye contact and how much he is tuning into me. He watches my every move. He’s discovered beef sticks and I think part of his attentiveness has to do with my setting a treat down next to him when I walk by.
He also found his voice! I have an office in the lower level of the house, and this past week I was working and the resident dogs came down to keep me company. He was upstairs by himself and all of a sudden he let out one loud bark—he wanted to be with us! I coaxed him down the steps, and there was a whole other house there! He had to be coaxed back up the steps, but since then he goes up and down the steps like a champ (with just a tad of guidance)!
This handsome boy is a sweetheart. He’s made such wonderful progress since his first posting, I tend to focus on those accomplishments. He still has things to work through, and they will take time and patience as be builds his confidence. He tends to be more skittish in the house. I often times will need to give him a nudge to get him up to go outside to go potty, or to go in another room. If I said “Tucker come here” or “Let’s go potty” he’ll just lay there. If I give the slightest nudge though—I usually gently lift his Easy Walk harness just to get him to stand, then he is good-to-go and will head to the door.
I praise him like crazy for the smallest of accomplishments, and he’s responding to that. When he is outside he is tons more responsive though. Today he was playing outside with the other dogs and I called for him, “Tucker!!” and he looked over toward me. He’s not quite ready to come over to me yet when I call, but getting him to acknowledge his name is a big accomplishment, and an even bigger win when he smiles!

Hi everybody, I’m Tucker! I came from a place where there were lots of Golden Retrievers and mom dogs with puppies. I’m not sure why they’d didn’t keep me there—everybody keeps telling me how handsome I am.
I was sent to an auction, and then some nice people from RAGOM came and got me and 14 other dogs and brought us all up north. I really like it here in my new home. I have a soft bed of my own, and I get yummy food 3 or 4 times a day (I’m kind of skinny).
I went to the vet today and she fell in love with me. She was surprised that I was under a year old because I am so mellow. She wondered if maybe she should bring me home. I was standing there getting poked and prodded, but it wasn’t a big deal because my foster mom was petting me and telling me what a good boy I am.
I’m up to date with my vaccinations, and I don’t have any worms in my "you know what." That nice vet said I need to put on about 10 lbs. Everybody likes to eat at my new house, so the other dogs look concerned when mom gives me an extra meal and they don’t get any!
Foster mom here: Tucker is such a love. He has really quiet, gentle energy. He comes from an under-socialized background and is getting used to everyday things. With each passing day he gains confidence: He is getting the hang of where to stand so he isn’t in the way when a door is opened.
He has mastered short runs of steps, there haven’t been any potty or poop accidents in the house, and he walks well on a leash. Such a good boy! Sometimes he gets spooked when we are outside, so I have him double-leashed if we aren’t in the fenced-in area.
Tucker chooses to spend time in his crate. We have it in a corner of the living room where he can see the kitchen and all the action. When he comes in after a potty break he marches right over to it. That’s his safe place and he really likes it. Most of the time we leave the crate door open. We also have a crate in the bedroom for him.
Yesterday morning when the alarm went off the other dogs jumped up on the bed for some lovin’. When I got up and went to let him out he wagged his tail for me for the first time. I was a combination of surprised and thrilled all at once!
We’ve been exploring going to different places to stretch his comfort zone. All the dogs hop in the vehicle and we go somewhere fun to walk (county park with groomed trails, city park with blacktopped trail), or we just go for walks at home. He is doing extremely well with that–he rides well in the car, and he loves any kind of exercise.
He is a beauty to watch in motion—he is a natural athlete, and he has that dark red coloring and long feathering. He has the most magnificent snout, and as he gets more relaxed I see him sniffing and engaging more with his senses. Today he demonstrated a hundred and one ways to roll in the snow—such a silly boy!
Tucker will need a family or person who is patient and will enjoy every step along the way as he gains confidence. You’ll need to be committed to his growth and socialization. He’s a quick study and has learned so much in the short week I’ve had him. He’s a love and the family who adopts him will be incredibly lucky—and blessed.
Each day is a new adventure for Tucker, and I’ll write more as I get to know him.
