Dexter is a Goldendoodle who is a beautiful deep redish color. He is more Golden than Doodle, but his fur by his bottom feathers give him that curly look.

On May 23rd, Christmas came early for Dexter. He has a family of his own! He will now reside with a fur sister named Parker and two human siblings who will show him unconditional love and give him all the pets he wants. He will enjoy daily walks on the walking trails, attending his human brother's baseball games with the family, and truly living the GOLDEN life. He hit the jackpot for sure. Happy trails to Dexter!

"I'm a real boy!" That is was Pinocchio shouted to Gepetto at the end of the movie. I feel like if Dexter could speak he would look at me and say, "I'm a real dog!" Yes, Dexter you certainly are.

He has come so far since arriving in my home. He now goes outside all on his own with the other dogs. He is often times the last one to come in, because he is having so much fun. Loud noises are starting to bother him less and less. The other day I was using the hair dryer and he did not run, but came close to me to see what I was doing. He inspected the noise and was OK with it.

He is getting used to the routine of the household. He especially enjoys his nighttime walks with the pack. He gets very excited when we start out—he is still, after all, a puppy at 8 months. He barks and jumps and wiggles with excitement. After a few houses he calms down and walks like a good boy.

After the walk we come home, play, settle in on the couch for a bit, then do our nightly routine. That consists of one last potty outside, a treat, and then everybody "upstairs." He is picking up on commonly repeated phrases quickly: sit, off, good boy, etc.

He wonders where his forever family is. Are you out there? Is it you?

Dexter has been with us now for two weeks and his personality is shining more and more. While he still loves to be near people (he cannot get enough pets and loving), he is venturing out on his own to explore the house and play with the other dogs.

He is taking their lead on what it means to be a dog: from playing, trying to sneak the occasional sock by me (which is easily corrected with a stern “Dexter, I don’t think so”), and searching the toy bin on his own to pull out a bone or tennis ball. He even goes outside with the pack now and only occasionally looks back to see if his humans will be joining him.

I think Dexter has a few words he would like to say.

“As you know, I am a good boy. A handsome boy. Well at least that is what I hear so many times a day. Also my Foster Mom had someone called a photographer come over the other day and we did something called a photo shoot. Foster Mom kept telling me to smile, like Tyra Banks (I don’t know what that means, but I had a blast).

The lady was so nice, giving me pets, telling me she wanted to take me home with her. She was nice. Then last night Foster Mom got the photos back and was very excited. I guess my true color really shows. I also played boop the other dogs on their heads while sitting on the couch with Foster Mom; they seemed to like that because they kept coming back for more. I had fun! Ok, see ya later!”

Dexter is a great dog that would make any home lucky to have him. He has not had a single accident while in the home, and only barks when he is in the kennel. Even then it is just for a minute or two. We are going to try to let him have free roam in a confined safe area to see if he likes that better. Will post an update once that occurs.

He may be the type of dog who just does not care for the kennel, but it is important for him to understand it is a safe place. And for the most part he does. When vacuuming the other day, it startled him, and he took off. I found him in his kennel on the dog bed. That is a plus. He knew it was a safe space.

So if you have another dog, a fenced yard, and love to give, please consider this sweet boy.

Dexter recently transferred fosters, as he came more out of his shell at his old fosters, he became a bit more vocal. As the previous foster worked from home, he was transferred to a new foster home. He initially was very shy and reserved with the new environment, but as the week progresses he is slowly coming out of his shell. This week...

“Hey everyone, Dexter here! And let me tell you I am having so much fun at my foster home. They have three other dogs that I have met. I kept hearing my Foster Mom talk about proper introductions with the person who so kindly transported me here. I heard and saw three other dogs waiting to say hi to me when I arrived, but they only let me meet them one at a time. I guess the proper introductions went well, because now Foster Mom lets me interact with all of the dogs at once!!

I got here on Monday the 2nd, had a bit of a hard time sleeping Monday night, had fun on Tuesday, had something called a neuter on Wednesday, and now I am back to hanging with Foster Mom. She keeps me by her side at all time, even when outside. She keeps telling me it is so I heal nicely. Ok, that’s fine. I like my human. Well, I think I am going to go curl up in the sunshine and take a nap. I would love to meet you!”

Thanks Dexter. As you can read, he is having a good time here. We are still working on crate training. He does not like to go in so willingly, but if you give him a nudge he goes in. He is becoming more accustomed to it and barking less in it. He eats his breakfast and dinner in it, to help with the positive association of the kennel.

Dexter still enjoys human attention and at times can be a “Velcro dog,” meaning where you go, he goes. He is slowly starting to emerge from that, and will go seek out toys and bones to chew on by himself. He still is a little skittish if the other dogs make a sudden movement or loud noise by him, but it is slowly getting better.

He recently went outside without his Foster Mom this morning to do his business. He does have a fenced yard, but is also currently on a tie out lead as well for his safety. When he is off the tie out in the backyard he loves to explore the smells, eat the snow, and chase after the other dogs.

As mentioned below, he will need another confident dog in the home to help show him the ropes. He is still a puppy, 8 months old, and acts like it at times. He mouths when he wants attention, and will grab inappropriate items to chew on, all of which is redirected very easily. He will need someone to take him to training to help him achieve his best self.  Is that someone you?

Dexter has arrived and came from a Missouri auction. He’s about 8 months old (DOB 7/31/17) and is on the heavier side at about 60 pounds. He is a Goldendoodle but looks like a wavy-coated Golden. He’s been to the vet so is UTD on Rabies and Bordetella but will need a Distemper booster in 3 weeks as well as to be neutered. He does have worms so is undergoing treatment for that currently.

He's settling in well and now that he's becoming more comfortable, he's also found his voice. Dexter is very sweet and though still nervous, loves human attention. He definitely doesn't want to be far from me and will smile when I let him out of his crate or talk to him. He’s becoming more confident where he'll pull toys out of the toybox to chew on.

No accidents either which is awesome, we go out every couple of hours and more when he's actively playing. Dexter isn’t a fan of his crate where he needs a boost to go in and cries while in it if I'm home such as showering or when I can't watch him, however these things are improving.

He follows my dogs closely, especially Hugo, my youngest male Saint. He is starting to initiate play with him too. Dexter doesn't know boundaries with other dogs where he'll walk and step on them if they’re laying down or jump on Hugo’s back to get to me if I’m giving Hugo attention.

He also does the chin kissing a lot. My female Saint, Kylah, is more patient then my female Shepherd, Tika, where she is pretty upfront about being left alone. Dexter takes corrections from the girls well and will respond appropriately. However, he has displayed some resource guarding with only Kylah; once was with toys and another time he was guarding his best buddy Hugo. He redirects easily and we are working on this.

What Dexter needs in his forever home:

  • Another confident dog to help him learn good doggy manners and can take ques from. Everything is still new to Dexter and he will follow the other dogs’ lead such as going through doorways.
  • Slow and positive socialization to help build his confidence.
  • Obedience training to teach him basic commands, build his bond with his new owners, and to help with socialization and confidence building.
  • Patience as everything is new for Dexter; noises and quick movements are still scary for him. Like most puppies, he is learning what toys he can play with so will grab a pillow or blanket to chew on and also has put his front paws on the counter and table to see what I’m doing. He is easy to redirect and will respond to “no” though he’s still learning “get down.”
  • A fenced in yard to ensure that if he gets scared, he can’t bolt.
  • Kids older than 10 because loud noises and sudden movements make him nervous as well as the resource guarding behaviors displayed. Dexter will also sometimes mouth (gently) at your hands when excited and likes to taste your hair, silly boy.
