Ava was surrendered to RAGOM by a commercial breeder along with Harley 18-036 and Coal 18-038. She needed surgery for an umbilical hernia and was spayed at the same time so she couldn't be bred anymore. She is a petite 5-year-old, 62-pound Golden Retriever who is learning how great it is to live in a home with people. She startles easily, so she she would do best with children over 10 years old.

We adopted sweet Ava last May. Used as a breeder mama in a puppy mill for 5 years, the big wide world was a pretty scary place at first. She has come a long way since her rescue, thanks to the love and care of RAGOM rescuers, foster mom Jan, vets who cared for her, and now her adoptive family.

If you have any hesitation about adopting a rescue, let me tell you its one of the most rewarding experiences you can ever have. Ava is our second rescue...our first was a loving senior boy, and now Ava. We love you, sweet Ava girl and look forward as you live your best life!

Ava was a breeding mom from a puppy mill. We had no experience with this type of dog before now. We are on this journey together with sweet Ava.

Most days are challenging, but also very rewarding. Biggest hurdle was just getting her to come in and out through our door. The progress is slow, but we are already seeing some blossoming.

Thanks go out to RAGOM, Foster mom Jan, and Fursister Ruby who is teaching Ava not to be afraid.

Ava met her new family (prior RAGOM adopters) at the Chuck & Don's Meet & Greet. They fell in love with her sweet personality and petite size. Her new Mom is home all day and Ava will have a fur sister to play with. She really hit the jackpot with her new family!

Ava went to the Meet & Greet on April 7th at Chuck & Don’s in Edina and did really well. This was a big step for her because she had never walked into a room full of people and dogs before. As we walked in she was searching for a place to hide. She did better when we sat down and she met Noel 17-278. Thanks to Cindy G, I have some better pictures of her that were taken there.

There were a lot of people there and Ava met a really nice couple who are interested in adopting her. They waited for their home visit to be done and now are approved to adopt, so Ava will be meeting them with their dog.

Ava has become so much more confident since she first came here, but is still hesitant at times to come through the garage door and into the house. She is always afraid that someone is going to grab her. When I had to wipe paws off during the melting, Ava would run back into the yard to avoid the towel. Finally, when I showed her the treats, she let me wipe them off.

I would like to introduce you to my newest foster, Ava, who is a 5-year-old petite Purebred Golden Retriever. She was surrendered to RAGOM from a commercial breeder in MO because she needed surgery for an umbilical hernia and was spayed at the same time, so no more puppies for her! The breeder also surrendered Harley 18-036 and Coal 18-038.

Ava had her wellness exam and weighed in at 62 pounds. She got a clean bill of health, is now current on shots and her tummy where her hernia surgery was looked good. When many of the commercial breeder dogs come into RAGOM, they are terrified of everything since they are being exposed to all new things. Ava was more social than some of the other dogs I have seen. Some of the breeders let their children interact with the dogs and I think Ava was one of the lucky ones who was visited by humans.

Ava met my dogs with no problems. She was welcomed by two other former breeder dogs and acted happy to see them. Ava’s challenges were learning what the car is, how to go through a doorway, and how to go up and down steps. By following my dogs and repetitions of going through the door to go outside, it didn’t take long to learn that was OK. Ava never had an accident in the house!

Ava spent the first few days in the crate watching the other dogs move around the house. It didn’t take her long to be brave and come out of the crate to see what the dog beds were that they were laying on. At first, she would run the other way when I reached out to pet her but came up to me when she saw my dogs come by me. Now she wants to be petted all of the time.

Ava does need to have enough things to chew on. I learned the hard way that she loves to chew on paper. She pulled some papers from the kitchen counter when I was in the shower and had a ball shredding them. Also, stuffed animals look better to her with the stuffing pulled out. Luckily, she doesn’t eat it.

It didn’t take Ava long to learn about sleeping on the couch instead of in the crate. Also, she now sleeps on my bed with me and one of my other dogs. She loves to snuggle and get a tummy rub before going to sleep. She is loving her freedom!

Ava will need a home with a confident resident dog that Ava can follow and continue to learn from. Also, she will need a home where she can learn at her own pace with a lot of patience.
