Please welcome Bode 14-167. He is a 10-year-old male purebred Golden Retriever. He is neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date with his vaccines and preventatives (flea/heartworm). He is a tall boy, weighing 84 pounds. Bode does have significant arthritis in his back hips, so takes two different pain pills twice a day along with joint supplements. You can see in this picture that he has quite a bit of atrophy in his back legs (no muscle).
Bode, short for Bodean, was a beloved member of a family his entire life. His family had a toddler and a new baby on the way. Unfortunately, the arthritis caused him discomfort which was aggravated when the young child would toddle over him. His family made the difficult decision to do what was right for both Bode and the children and find him a quiet home he could live out his golden days.
This senior boy has stolen our hearts. He is your typically Golden...he has perfected the “lean in” for scratches and rewards those scratches with kisses. He loves to have a soft toy in his mouth. He pretends to want to play fetch, but the game is really trying to get the toy from him. Here is what we have learned so far:
- Loves car rides - needs a boost into taller vehicles.
- House trained.
- Free roam of the house - we have not crated him at all.
- House trained - wakes you up in the morning to go out with a big, wet lick (and then wants to eat!).
- Does not counter surf or get into things he shouldn’t.
- Gets along well with our resident dog. He has a low, quiet growl when he hears dogs bark or sees our neighbor’s dog. We have not introduced him to other dogs yet.
- He is on a tie-out in our yard is content with that.
- Pulls on a flat collar and martingale. We will try a Gentle Leader soon. Walks are short due to his hips, but we hope to build those up a bit.
- Knows many commands as he is a retired therapy dog - sit, stay, come, down, shake.
- Goes down stairs OK, but can get “stuck” going up.
If you have a quiet home without young children and stairs, this guy would love to become a part of your family.
