This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Please welcome Bode 14-167. He is a 10-year-old male purebred Golden Retriever. He is neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date with his vaccines and preventatives (flea/heartworm). He is a tall boy, weighing 84 pounds. Bode does have significant arthritis in his back hips, so takes two different pain pills twice a day along with joint supplements. You can see in this picture that he has quite a bit of atrophy in his back legs (no muscle).

Bode, short for Bodean, was a beloved member of a family his entire life. His family had a toddler and a new baby on the way. Unfortunately, the arthritis caused him discomfort which was aggravated when the young child would toddle over him. His family made the difficult decision to do what was right for both Bode and the children and find him a quiet home he could live out his golden days.

This senior boy has stolen our hearts. He is your typically Golden...he has perfected the “lean in” for scratches and rewards those scratches with kisses. He loves to have a soft toy in his mouth. He pretends to want to play fetch, but the game is really trying to get the toy from him. Here is what we have learned so far:

  • Loves car rides - needs a boost into taller vehicles.
  • House trained.
  • Free roam of the house - we have not crated him at all.
  • House trained - wakes you up in the morning to go out with a big, wet lick (and then wants to eat!).
  • Does not counter surf or get into things he shouldn’t.
  • Gets along well with our resident dog. He has a low, quiet growl when he hears dogs bark or sees our neighbor’s dog. We have not introduced him to other dogs yet.
  • He is on a tie-out in our yard is content with that.
  • Pulls on a flat collar and martingale. We will try a Gentle Leader soon. Walks are short due to his hips, but we hope to build those up a bit.
  • Knows many commands as he is a retired therapy dog - sit, stay, come, down, shake.
  • Goes down stairs OK, but can get “stuck” going up.

If you have a quiet home without young children and stairs, this guy would love to become a part of your family.

Well, the past couple of weeks for Bode have been great weeks. Bode went to the groomer's and had his nails done along with a shampoo and blowout! What a handsome boy and the gals at Wag n' Whiskers fell in love (thank you for your generous gift to Bode).

He attended “Strike Gold for Goldens” fundraiser in Sioux Falls this past weekend and enjoyed watching the bowlers! Who would have guessed that he was a bowler at heart?

It was also at this event that Bode found his forever family... I’ve always looked forward to events, hoping one of our adoptive families would walk in and meet our foster and fall in love. For the first time in two years of fostering several incredible dogs, I didn’t want my foster to meet a family at an event. My husband and sons were there and we made the decision that Bode had already met his forever family when he walked through our door. Welcome home, Bode. Thank you for picking us and thank you to his surrendering family for picking RAGOM to care for your boy.

Bode has been with us for just over 2 weeks now and we couldn’t be more pleased with how he has transitioned into a new routine. In fact, I think it’s more that he has US adapting to his routine. Bode is an early riser and on work days, that is great, but on the weekends, I prefer not to see the first number on the alarm be a 5! He wakes up and comes lay his head on the bed and stares at you until you open your eyes. If you “Play Dead,” he sneezes on you...it’s all a ploy to get you out of bed. We take him out right away and then he heads straight into the room where he is fed and turns and looks at you like “you’re not done yet!” He gets an A+, however, because once his is let out and fed, he comes back to bed with us.

It’s hard to get a picture of him without a soft toy in his mouth. Heaven forbid you try to put a couple of them away...Every time I pick one up, he drops the one in his mouth to get the one I am putting away. This exchange happens all along the way to the toy bin. Eventually, he has them all back out. I just have fun playing our little game.

Bode attended his first Meet and Greet this weekend and did fairly well. He definitely didn’t like being crowded by the other dogs, especially the male dogs. He did beautifully if he had more space around him. He handled the people very well. After about an hour and a half, we brought him home. He was getting uncomfortable on the concrete and really had enough of all of the hubbub. Needless to say, he slept well...I think we even made it to a 6 on the alarm clock the next morning!

Contact placement if you have the quiet place that Mr. Bode needs.
