Cedar 05-162 [1]

6/9/05: Cedar is one of the puppy mill kids that we got in last night, and he has safely made his long journey from Missouri into foster care with me and my resident dog Sadie. We were very happy to see him, and he turned out to be quite beautiful with his wavy red coat and soulful brown eyes. He is five years old and has had most of his vetting done already.

He arrived in pretty fair shape actually, and seems to already be getting over his very noticeable shyness when we first met him. He could use a bath, but we can't do that yet because he is still healing up from his neuter. He got a baby wipe bath last night and that helped a bit. We saw the vet today, and he will need to wear a cone for about 10 days so he leaves the incision alone. It came part of the way open on his long drive to Minnesota, and needs time to heal now. It got a bit infected because he licked it so much, but we got pills today to clear that up.

Cedar has the usual fears that these puppy mill dogs come with, which includes loud noises, hands coming his way fast, and any other fast or sudden movements. For the most part though, he seems surprisingly well adjusted, and is even doing okay despite wearing the cone. He really didn't care much about my 2 cats either. What a trooper~!

We plan to use these first several days to recover from his long journey, and have a sweet deserved vacation and recovery stay here at my resort. We plan to roll in the grass, sit in the shade, sip cold water outside, and have kibbles until we sleep with round bellies. This boy deserves royal treatment from here on out and he's going to get it!
