Cedar 05-162

Profile

6/9/05: Cedar is one of the puppy mill kids that we got in last night, and he has safely made his long journey from Missouri into foster care with me and my resident dog Sadie. We were very happy to see him, and he turned out to be quite beautiful with his wavy red coat and soulful brown eyes. He is five years old and has had most of his vetting done already.

He arrived in pretty fair shape actually, and seems to already be getting over his very noticeable shyness when we first met him. He could use a bath, but we can't do that yet because he is still healing up from his neuter. He got a baby wipe bath last night and that helped a bit. We saw the vet today, and he will need to wear a cone for about 10 days so he leaves the incision alone. It came part of the way open on his long drive to Minnesota, and needs time to heal now. It got a bit infected because he licked it so much, but we got pills today to clear that up.

Cedar has the usual fears that these puppy mill dogs come with, which includes loud noises, hands coming his way fast, and any other fast or sudden movements. For the most part though, he seems surprisingly well adjusted, and is even doing okay despite wearing the cone. He really didn't care much about my 2 cats either. What a trooper~!

We plan to use these first several days to recover from his long journey, and have a sweet deserved vacation and recovery stay here at my resort. We plan to roll in the grass, sit in the shade, sip cold water outside, and have kibbles until we sleep with round bellies. This boy deserves royal treatment from here on out and he's going to get it!

We are so very sad to bring the news that December 2nd 2014 we had to help Cedar cross over the Rainbow Bridge leading him into a golden eternity. Cedar was born June 5th 2000 at a puppy mill somewhere in Missouri, and that is where he lived the first 5 years of his life. It was from that puppy mill that RAGOM was able to rescue Cedar from a life of abuse and neglect, and save him from the tick born disease called Ehrlichia that would have otherwise killed him.

For us it began in late summer of 2005 when we met and adopted Cedar from his RAGOM foster home in White Bear Lake Minnesota. Shortly after we adopted Cedar we began showing him a new life, he was enrolled into training, socialization and agility classes where he really opened up and realized he was a part of something special. He loved going to class where he learned to conquer so many of the fears that puppy mill dogs often have. We were so proud of him and he was so unbelievably proud of himself and he learned to love and appreciate his new and wonderful life.

Over the years Cedar was a constant companion and despite the former abuse and neglect he had endured at the puppy mill, he loved all people and his human companionship. No doubt, Cedar was truly a kind soul and we are blessed to have had him in our lives. Together, we shared many adventures including countless trips into the Boundary Waters each year, going to the family cabin in Ely, the family farm in Zumbrota, the fall hunting trips to North Dakota and so much more.

If given a choice, Cedars absolute favorite place was being in a boat and going out fishing. When at the cabin Cedar would nap or just sit in a boat while tied to the dock. Whenever the family fished off the dock Cedar would watch our bobbers and then get excited if we caught a fish. Believe it or not, Cedar also enjoyed watching TV and would watch entire shows and programs that had animals in them including cartoon animals. One of Cedar's other favorite things was leaning up against the backyard fence and letting the children next door reach through and pet him. He loved kids!!

In 2010 our son Mason was born and Cedar was perfect, he acted like a proud Dad always wanting to be near the new baby. I would describe Cedar as a creature of habit who loved his toys and was proud to be a part of our family. Cedar was and will forever be a true treasure to this world, he never forgot a thing and he will not be forgotten. We love you Cedar!!

It has been only one week since sweet Cedar came our way and boy what a difference! He is no longer scared of me, and approaches me on his own asking for chin scratches. He has only had one accident in the house, and that was within one day of arriving. His belly is all healed up and we are treating his ears. He absolutely loves ear rubs. I am surprised at how fast he learned to walk on a leash. We were even able to take the Gentle Leader off and use a regular collar after only a few walks. He is quite animated actually, and likes to be a goofball by using his voice and rolling around on the grass. He plays with ME like a dog instead of my resident dog. He doesn't want much to do with her yet, but time seems to be making him pay more and more attention to her. Don't know how much he played where he came from, but tug, fetch and other various toys are a slow go with him, but it's happening.

He is now being left out in the kitchen during the day with Sadie, but has jumped the baby gate again. I can't figure out how he is doing it, and he doesn't do it every time. He doesn't do any damage having the full run of the house so far, although he did walk through my screen door. Like that's never happened before! He does still pose a great interest to my big white cat, but they have been nose to nose more than once and seem to be making friends. The other day he clomped onto white cat's back foot with his mouth, and white cat screamed loud enough for the neighbors a block away to hear, but he didn't hurt him. I checked and his foot was just wet; Cedar had a big smile with remnants of white fur on his lips.

He really has no other bad manners, and is eating regularly. We don't have to crate him anymore, and the cone is gone. He loves to be around me, and I really think that whoever adopts him will have a quick bond. He sleeps on the bed now and jumps on the couch, two things he didn't do until he learned them! I'm such a great teacher-ha!

I have included a picture of him smiling while he gets an ear scratch. He will come up and ask for one now, and moans when you do it. Oh please won't you consider being his life long ear scratcher? He's ready for his forever family and home!

Cedar has become an avid cat chaser now. Therefore, I am thinking he should go to a home with either no cats or dog friendly cats. I also feel that he needs to go to a home with another dog, and for sure a fenced in yard. He has a lot of energy and likes to run and prance. He also jumps baby gates. We took the cone off for a while today and he acted like a puppy seeing everything for the first time. He has discovered the path to the good life now and it's such a joy to see him stroll along!
