From the streets to the city pound to RAGOM, this young man has had a bit of travel time. Welcome Dawson, long legged, wavy black coat, square face, twinkling eyes and a tail that revs at high RPM's. Dawson is a Golden/Lab mix with the wiggly butt of a pupper, which he is. The vet is guessing about a year old. You would never know that by the looks of his teeth. He has a broken baby canine above his adult canine that is abscessed and bloody, plus a couple more bloody teeth next to that. He is intact, but teeth and manhood will be taken care of come Wednesday. After that he will be available for adoption.
Dawson is such a puppy but a good one. He has never raised his leg in the van or the house....whew!! He has a thing about not wanting to go outside from the garage service door, but is fine if left out via the sliders in the kitchen. Go figure. He has had 2 poop accidents in my basement and that is my fault. I need to be sure he is outside long enough to accomplish all his business. I am treating him like the puppy he is, which means potty breaks upon waking, after eating and after a hard play time.
He loves loves loves people, dogs and cats. I have a senior, ex-RAGOM boy Jake and a 10 month old cocker spaniel named Jax. Jax is so excited to have a playmate and they tear through the house and yard and wear one another out. I have 3 cats and one will walk up to him and rub against him and he's fine. The other 2 are more shy and if Jax decides to give chase Dawson follows suit, but when I say no, that's it.
I believe Dawson was an inside dog at one point, is housebroken to a larger degree and he was taught sit at some point. He likes to jump up on you and put his paws on the counter to check things out, but with a stern NO he is down on all fours. He is very loving and would like to be a lap dog if possible.................and he's tried a couple times LOL He sleeps in a big wire crate and is fine. First night he wanted out at 5 a.m. to potty, but went back in and slept til we got up. Last night he went in and slept all night. As much as I would love to have him up in the bedroom I know he's better served learning to be crate trained.
Dawson will grow and shine with obedience training. He is a fast learner, is learning his boundaries and with training he will be an awesome dog. People often say they can train themselves, which many can. However, the best part about obedience classes is the socialization for the dog. Dawson loves people and dogs and would so enjoy classes. He is a very strong puller on a flat leash and for now he needs a gentle leader to keep the human's arm in the socket LOL
Dawson would do best in a home without small children since he still likes to 'stand on his rear legs' a bit too much at this point. Another dog that liks to play would be awesome. A fenced in yard would be great for running and burning that puppy energy off, or if ok'd by your vet he could be a running partner. He is young and ready to be molded into this wonderful dog...............question is who will be that family that shares that amazing journey with him.
