Dawson 09-454

From the streets to the city pound to RAGOM, this young man has had a bit of travel time. Welcome Dawson, long legged, wavy black coat, square face, twinkling eyes and a tail that revs at high RPM's. Dawson is a Golden/Lab mix with the wiggly butt of a pupper, which he is. The vet is guessing about a year old. You would never know that by the looks of his teeth. He has a broken baby canine above his adult canine that is abscessed and bloody, plus a couple more bloody teeth next to that. He is intact, but teeth and manhood will be taken care of come Wednesday. After that he will be available for adoption.

Dawson is such a puppy but a good one. He has never raised his leg in the van or the house....whew!! He has a thing about not wanting to go outside from the garage service door, but is fine if left out via the sliders in the kitchen. Go figure. He has had 2 poop accidents in my basement and that is my fault. I need to be sure he is outside long enough to accomplish all his business. I am treating him like the puppy he is, which means potty breaks upon waking, after eating and after a hard play time.

He loves loves loves people, dogs and cats. I have a senior, ex-RAGOM boy Jake and a 10 month old cocker spaniel named Jax. Jax is so excited to have a playmate and they tear through the house and yard and wear one another out. I have 3 cats and one will walk up to him and rub against him and he's fine. The other 2 are more shy and if Jax decides to give chase Dawson follows suit, but when I say no, that's it.

I believe Dawson was an inside dog at one point, is housebroken to a larger degree and he was taught sit at some point. He likes to jump up on you and put his paws on the counter to check things out, but with a stern NO he is down on all fours. He is very loving and would like to be a lap dog if possible.................and he's tried a couple times LOL He sleeps in a big wire crate and is fine. First night he wanted out at 5 a.m. to potty, but went back in and slept til we got up. Last night he went in and slept all night. As much as I would love to have him up in the bedroom I know he's better served learning to be crate trained.

Dawson will grow and shine with obedience training. He is a fast learner, is learning his boundaries and with training he will be an awesome dog. People often say they can train themselves, which many can. However, the best part about obedience classes is the socialization for the dog. Dawson loves people and dogs and would so enjoy classes. He is a very strong puller on a flat leash and for now he needs a gentle leader to keep the human's arm in the socket LOL

Dawson would do best in a home without small children since he still likes to 'stand on his rear legs' a bit too much at this point. Another dog that liks to play would be awesome. A fenced in yard would be great for running and burning that puppy energy off, or if ok'd by your vet he could be a running partner. He is young and ready to be molded into this wonderful dog...............question is who will be that family that shares that amazing journey with him.

Yes, Dawson, there is a Santa Claus.  Dawson is in his furever home with his new parents, 2 human sisters, a human brother and Zelda, his fur butt sister. (Zelda was adopted from Ragom 11 year ago)  Guess doing your own updates does pay off.  The family came last weekend to meet Dawson, fell in love, took their 24 hour 'think time' and called back Sunday saying yes they would like to adopt Dawson.  Great news for Dawson, but of course I cried.  He is a special dog, very sweet, loving, goofy, smart and has been a great buddy/playmate for our cocker, Jax.  But when you do fostering, you know your time is limited with your foster.  So on Wednesday his new mom and sister, who just got home from college, beat the weather and made the trip up.  Dawson being the outgoing boy he is, was raring to go, jumped into the van and with nary a tear on his part off he went.

I know Dawson will have a wonderful life living on an acre of land, teenagers to keep him busy and parents who will give him all he needs.  It was a very quiet night here last night and Jax was in the dumps, but I know Dawson was his own happy self starting out his new life.  After all he was home for Christmas.

Merry Christmas, Dawson.  We miss and love you.

Woo hoo, I get to do my own write up today. We wore FM out tramping around the field and yard. She said something about needing a nap. Whoa who knew when you got to be a RAGOM dog you got a warm home, family, good food AND sponsors like Ken and Barb? Thanks Ken and Barb!!! And then when you thought it couldn't get much better (well ok a furever home would be great) you get ChristmasTokens (gifts) via people who don't even know you!!!! I mean come on, is this for real? Well, I just gotta throw out a very big, huge, tremendous THANK YOU to Chelsea and Cecil (in honor of Bev) and then there's Kim and Bruce along with their RAGOM DOGS Ginger and Jackson..................like totally AWESOME!!!!! If you ever get up this way I'll share my treats with you and happily show you my high RPM tail and give you my paw and let you pet me and take you for a walk...........well you get the idea. Whew, just can't tell you how loved I feel. Thank you all so much.

Well, now that I've caught my breath let me tell you I love this snow. Even when it was really cold and Jax started lifting his paws (too cold for his tootsies) I wanted to run and play. But FM made us all come in and I wasn't happy about it. Today FM played hooky from work in the afternoon so we got to go get Lake (the lab in the pic with me, he lives next door) and the 5 of us went for a run in the field. Jax tries to keep up with us big guys but is too small, and old Jake (RAGOM boy who got adopted by FM and FD) just pokes along, but he makes the trip one time around to our 2 times LOL. Anyway it was great fun and we all listened pretty good.

So I'm wondering how come no one has adopted me yet. I've been going over my great qualities and thought maybe I should tell you my view of myself.

  • Handsome!
  • 99 % house trained (ok I've had an accident lately)
  • Fun loving!
  • LOVE all people, dogs, cats (I do like to give them a little chase now and then)
  • LOVE to cuddle and be petted,
  • Good recall
  • LOVE being outdoors and would make a great walking/running partner
  • Great at destuffing those pesky stuffed toys you have
  • I know how to sit and wait for my food
  • I feel I would be a wonderful addition to any family
  • I would do great with bigger kids (like over about 5 years old, just cuz I get a bit excited yet and my tail is very strong)
  • I would love to have another fur butt sibling
  • I love going for rides in the van
  • I welcome all visitors
  • I am crated when the folks go to work etc and I kennel up very nicely and always get a bone and treat for my good behavior.
  • Aah, well, I'm running out of great things to tell ya about me, but I am sure there is more!

OK folks I"m getting tired ringing my own bell here, so you are gonna just have to take my word for it...........I'm GReat !!!

Well, I think hear FM waking up so better close this down. Hope you enjoy my new pics. FM still doesn't have it down pat yet, but she's trying to get the hang of the new camera. Opposable thumbs or not, she still has a lot to learn Ha ha. Since she's gung-ho to take pics now, I'm sure you will be seeing more of me and Jax soon.

Meanwhile HAPPY HOLIDAYS and again thank you so much to Barb, Ken, Chelsea, Cecil, Kim, Bruce, Ginger and Jackson!!!

Love,
Dawson

aka Big D, the D-man

I'll race ya!

Let's go!

On alert...

Snow face!

Saturday, December 5, 2009

Well, the new camera arrived and we're trying to get some pics of Dawson and Jax playing. As you can see, I'm still learning LOL!  They love to play outdoors in the snow and then come racing back in and a little go around in the family room.  We were out today for a walk in the field and I can tell missing a couple days was too much.  Dawson ran like the wind, but as always his recall was great.

I am hard pressed on sticking with my thoughts of Dawson needing another dog.  I really do believe he needs the companionship and playmate, but on the other hand I wonder if a family with older kids who love to run and chase and play would be a happy home for him.  I think it's going to be a toss up.  After seeing him with kids, I believe he would do well if the kids were old enough to know he might jump up, and they would be able to deal with it.  He is such a love bug and wants to cuddle and be by you, but at the same time he's happy to play with Jax and tear around.  He does well with a small dog, though Jax plays like a big dog, and Dawson handles it well.  More patience than I'd have with him.

I know the holiday season is upon us and many people don't want to deal with adding a dog to the family.  I understand that only too well.  But I also know that Dawson adjusts so well and easily that he would meld into a family very readily.  Here again, it's a matter of the right family for him and the right time.

Our daughter is getting married January 7th in Mexico and we will be gone for over a week.  At that time Dawson will have to visit with another foster, and most likely in the metro area.  So if now is not a good time, maybe the new year will find the right family for Dawson.

More pictures to come as I continue to read and put into practice the instructions to give me the best pics.  Catching a black dog on screen is sometimes a bit difficult, but hey maybe I can get him to pose in front of a white sheet.LOL

If you are an approved applicant and would like to even chat and learn a bit more about Dawson, just contact your placement advisor.

And last but not least, a big thank you to Ken and Barb for sponsoring Dawson. Sloppily kisses and big black dog hugs sent your way.

OK via a very long process I managed to get some pics of Dawson. In the one with him and Jax on the deck, you can clearly see the swelling on his right cheek.  But mostly you will see a handsome boy who likes to climb in a dog bed...even if it's sitting on a couch in the basement.  He loves to play, Jax is his best buddy, he loves attention and if one of the dogs go to TM he's right there.

Saturday we had 3 kids over, ages 2 and 5.  He was really good over all, but gotta say that he has a very strong tail and since he's a happy boy, it goes at high rpms!!!  He is still in that mouthing stage, but I'm hoping once he gets toys back and he can chew on them, de-stuff them and just carry them around, it will cut down on the mouthing.

Last night for the first time he got on a dog bed on the floor in the family room and curled up and just sighed.  Guess the leather couch was getting to be old hat LOL  We haven't had any more accidents as I watch more carefully, and I think he is finally letting me know when it's time....he comes and stands by my chair and stares at me.  When I ask him if he has to go out, he will usually head for the stairs.  If it's just attention he's looking for, he stays put.

This boy is the sweetest and , gets along with all the dogs he has met.  Sunday he got his first taste of freedom as we took our 3 and a family members ex-ragom girl, Hailey, out in the field.  What a beauty he is and poetry in motion when galloping to and fro.  His recall was excellent over all.  It was so much fun to see him covering that field and Jax trying to keep up with him.  Quite the sight to see 4 dogs, different ages all going about their own way to enjoy the sun and field.

I still think small kids aren't a good idea due to Dawson's happy tail.  Fenced yard can be optional if he is exercised via long walks, dog parks, or play dates.  As long as he is kept busy and gets his exercise,  he will be a good and happy boy.  He will do well in obedience training not just for the training, but the bonding and socializing.

Dawson would like to thank RAGOM for rescuing him. He had been a stray and ended up in our 'dog pound'.  They have not administered any shots or received any vetting work. All I could think of was if someone had adopted him and never vetted him he would've remained in pain forever.

It turns out Dawson was shot in the face!!!  Once the vet got in they discovered that a 'bullet' had penetrated his mouth and destroyed 3 molars on the bottom right side of his face. They picked out as much shrapnel as they could find. There was one hunk that could not be removed as it had absorbed into his mouth. The surgery took much longer than expected. As if that wasn't enough, his baby canine, on the same side of the mouth never fell out and so the adult one came in over it. That was the one that was bloody and abscessed. Sadly both teeth had to be removed, for a grand total of 5 teeth. All on the right side of  his mouth. When I went to visit him that night he greeted me with wagging tale and swelling on the right side of his face that looked like he had a golf ball shoved up under his skin. So sad.

Now comes the hard part; keeping him quiet, no toys, no chew bones, no hard food (dog or people) and no treats. This is a puppy, a big wiggly butt, happy go lucky puppy that came home happy as ever. Jax, our cocker pupper was so excited to him and vice versa. Within a couple minutes they wanted to play and mouth one another etc. All a NO NO. So the challenge right now is to keep all the toys picked up, not let puppers play together, and keep Dawson quiet. Tom Cruise had it easier in Mission Impossible!! But rules are rules and so we keep a watchful eye on them and when they start to get rowdy one goes up in the kitchen and the other down in the family room. I feel so mean and they can't understand why I'm so mean:(

Dawson will have to have his mouth rechecked in 2 weeks and make sure the stitches in his mouth have dissolved and all is healing the way it should. We don't expect any issues down the line. Once he is allowed back on dry kibble he will need help in showing him he needs to chew on his left side. He is a smart boy and will learn very quickly. All he needs is love, some training and allowed to live his life out being treasured.

If you have any questions about Dawson or would like to meet him, please contact  your placement advisor.
