This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog. |
Hank is a 2 year old male purebred Golden Retriever. He is UTD on all shots. He is a svelte 60lbs, is neutered, with no health issues and no guarding issues. Hank lived with a cat and they liked to play together. He also likes other dogs. Hank is not destructive, does not jump up or counter surf and has no reported storm anxieties.
His problems with being so shy and skittish seemed to start with the impending arrival of a new baby in the house and an incident where he got tangled up in a necklace that the 3 year old put on him. He also ran away when he was scared and was found 5 miles from home after crossing highways and other busy roads.
When Hank arrived he was a VERY scared boy. Scared of leashes, scared of cars (riding in them as well as cars driving past), scared of loud noises and sudden movements. His tail stayed between his legs for 2 or 3 days. We were thrilled when that tail started wagging occasionally. Hank has had a few accidents in the house, mostly due to stress, but that is improving too.
He is truly happy when chasing a ball. He literally prances with those long legs of his and his tail is held up proudly. He would like to play with our resident dog, but being a bit older, she ignores him. On the other hand, he follows her lead in situations where he is scared, so a requirement for Hank is having another confident, medium to large dog (preferably one that is playful and active).
We have been working on desensitizing him to all his triggers and he has made good progress already on accepting a leash. Hank should also have a physical fence because he has run. An adoptive family would have to be willing to continue to work on his fears and take him to obedience training. He will require a lot of time and patience.
He LOVES to snuggle with everyone after he gets to know you. He is quite the cuddle bug.
