In addition to LOVE this dog has the following requirements:
Entered Foster Care Fence Kid Friendly Another Dog Cat Friendly
02/09/2014 Required 10+ Required Yes
This is the most recent information available; however, it may change as we learn more about the dog.

Hank is a 2 year old male purebred Golden Retriever. He is UTD on all shots. He is a svelte 60lbs, is neutered, with no health issues and no guarding issues. Hank lived with a cat and they liked to play together. He also likes other dogs. Hank is not destructive, does not jump up or counter surf and has no reported storm anxieties.

His problems with being so shy and skittish seemed to start with the impending arrival of a new baby in the house and an incident where he got tangled up in a necklace that the 3 year old put on him. He also ran away when he was scared and was found 5 miles from home after crossing highways and other busy roads.

When Hank arrived he was a VERY scared boy. Scared of leashes, scared of cars (riding in them as well as cars driving past), scared of loud noises and sudden movements. His tail stayed between his legs for 2 or 3 days. We were thrilled when that tail started wagging occasionally. Hank has had a few accidents in the house, mostly due to stress, but that is improving too.

He is truly happy when chasing a ball. He literally prances with those long legs of his and his tail is held up proudly. He would like to play with our resident dog, but being a bit older, she ignores him. On the other hand, he follows her lead in situations where he is scared, so a requirement for Hank is having another confident, medium to large dog (preferably one that is playful and active).

We have been working on desensitizing him to all his triggers and he has made good progress already on accepting a leash. Hank should also have a physical fence because he has run. An adoptive family would have to be willing to continue to work on his fears and take him to obedience training. He will require a lot of time and patience.

He LOVES to snuggle with everyone after he gets to know you. He is quite the cuddle bug.

Hank has been adopted and went to his new home Tuesday, March 11. We are going to miss that sweet boy so much but are happy that he found such a fabulous new family including an older fur brother Tobi.

Hank has settled in so well. He is really easy to have around. He has been getting a short walk in the morning and a longer one in the afternoon and is happy to just hang around the house the rest of the day. He would probably prefer to stretch those long legs of his a bit more, but because we don’t have a fence, he has to be happy on a leash at my shuffling pace on the ice. I think he would be a great running partner! Hank is very gentle and calm for a 2 year old. The only thing he has destroyed in 3 weeks was a piece of paper. We are starting crate training, but he is so trustworthy that we aren’t pushing him too hard on it.

I’m including two pictures of him sleeping: one with his nose in foster dad’s slipper and the other cuddling with our resident dog Curry.

Hank has been with us for two weeks. He is the gentlest dog I have ever met. When he wants attention he will ever so gently lay his head on your lap or simply stand next to you. He has not had an accident in the house for more than a week. He walks nicely on a leash now but clearly fears getting tangled up in it. He is much more relaxed about car rides too.

Hank will need continuing work on:

*Desensitization to cars during walks and riding in cars
*Going up and down stairs
*Relaxing while getting ears cleaned and nails clipped
*Signaling when he needs to go outside

Hank’s great qualities:

*Does not chew on inappropriate items (except plants)
*Walks nicely on a leash unless he gets tangled or sees a car coming
*No separation anxiety
*Has not bolted out the door
*No resource guarding
*Does not jump up on people
*Knows “sit” and is working on ”down” and “stay”
*Respects gates
*Is good with dogs and reportedly with cats
*Healthy
*Gentle when taking treats
*Likes to fetch a tennis ball
*Would be a great running partner on trails without cars
*Does not counter surf
*Rarely barks

Hank needs:
*Quieter household with patient people
*Large fenced area for his safety and playing fetch
*Crate training
*Basic obedience classes
