I'd like to introduce Ausia 13-339. She is a 1 1/2 year old female Golden mix. She weighs in at 54 lbs. She was brought in to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue in Red Lake, MN as a stray with puppies. Ausia had a bad cut on her right rear leg with other damage to tendons. She was taken to a vet clinic in Bemidji for surgery. The rescue shelter was full so they contacted RAGOM for help with Ausia and 2 other dogs. Red Lake Rosie's was nice enough to arrange transport to the Minneapolis/St Paul area where I picked her up. Ausia rode very well on the 50 mile trip to my house only whimpering a couple times.

When we arrived at my house, Ausia met my resident dog Ziggy, other foster dog Liberty and cats with no problems at all. Ausia was a bit nervous as most dogs are in a new place, and paced and drank lots of water. When supper time came a little while later, Ausia practically inhaled her food. I don't think she chewed any of it. Ausia was pretty thin and obviously quite hungry.

The first night I put Ausia in the crate downstairs [my bedroom is on the 2nd floor] and was awakened at 3 am by her cries and barks. I got up and let her outside and she did her business out there. Since I knew little about Ausia this was a good sign that she may have lived in a house before and was possibly house broken. The next day I let her out every few hours and she never had any accidents in the house. Most new fosters usually have at least one accident. Ausia started settling in pretty well the second day. I let her sleep in the bedroom that night and had no problems. Ausia slept on the floor and dog beds that night.

The next day Ausia had an appointment at the vet for her wellness check up. Dr. Becky said Ausia was in good shape other than being underweight. The wrap was cut off her leg and no new dressing put on. Dr. Becky thought it would be better to let it dry out since it was healing very well. Ausia was still going to have to wear the cone for a while to keep her from licking her leg. Ausia was brought up to date on all her vaccines, checked for worms and heartworm and tested for Lyme disease. No worms or heartworm but she did test positive for Lyme. Testing positive for Lyme does not mean she has Lyme disease, only that she has been bitten by the type of tick that carries it. Ausia hasn't been spayed yet. I will be scheduling that this week at MNsnap.

Ausia is very affectionate. She loves to be petted and rubbed. She cuddles also but seems like she can't lay still very long. Ausia does jump up on the furniture and will jump up in bed with me. She usually doesn't spend the whole night in the bed. Ausia will jump up on me when she is excited. I'm working on getting that to stop. Ausia also has counter-surfed and got in the wastebasket once. Both of those still need more work. Ausia does have fairly good recall. Ausia does know "sit" very well. She knows she has to sit to get fed. I'm working on random sits all the time. She doesn't seem to know any other commands that I have seen. She does seem to have a desire to learn new things. Ausia now walks pretty good on a leash most of the time. She has improved a lot in the week I've had her.

Ausia is available to meet potential adopters. Since she isn't spayed yet she would have to have a "Adoption Pending" until she has recovered from the spay surgery.

Here are a few of Ausia's highlights so far:

  • Ausia has good recall
  • Ausia gets along well with all other dogs she has met
  • Ausia gets along with cats
  • Ausia walks good on a leash but her distance is limited at this point until her leg is fully healed.
  • Ausia is very affectionate and loves to be with her people
  • Ausia was very good with older kids. Other than stealing food, I think she would be good with younger kids. I've seen no aggression from her at all.

Here's a few things that Ausia would need in her new home:

  • A commitment to continued training
  • Good food and daily exercise
  • Lots of love and attention

Updates

Sunday, December 14, 2014

We can’t believe that it’s been a year (to the day!) that we adopted Auzi (Ausia 13-339). December 14th, 2013 we drove away from her foster’s home where she’d been so wonderfully taken care of and spent time with cats, the resident dog, and another RAGOM foster. Auzi wasn’t so sure about Santa last year! Who were these two strange people he brought her?!

Fast forward a couple months and she’d graduated from obedience class, but she thought it was silly to spend so much money as she already knew everything. A smart young dog indeed! It took a little adjusting, but Auzi learned that “back yard” = “bathroom” but “basement” does not. She also learned that she doesn’t like a gentle leader, but does like walks, so she stopped pulling quickly!

June 2014 her DNA was analyzed and our “Golden Retriever-mix” turned out to be a “German Shepherd/Collie/Samoyed-mix” but there’s no way we could even ask RAGOM about a return policy (kidding!) The longer this “Golden-at-heart” hangs around, the more we can’t imagine a day without her. She definitely thinks she’s a lap dog. Mom’s parents don’t seem to mind!

One of the most unique things about our Auzi is that she loves bike rides! She doesn’t get on the bike with Dad, but he bikes with her. She runs and runs and runs and never seems to tire out. What would take 2 hours walking takes 25 minutes on the bike and she gets to see a lot more of the neighborhood! People regularly see us walking and ask “are you the ones with the dog that runs with the bikes?!”

Now, a year later, Auzi has found some neighborhood friends including Ozzy (uncanny, right?!) a black lab who lives down the street and Grandpa’s Cockapoo Vinnie. She can be a little to0 playful for other Grandpa’s Brittany Marty, though he’s good for a snuggle. She’s a great companion for Mom when Dad’s traveling for work and makes a wonderful, if lick-y, alarm clock. This year Auzi is just happy that Santa let her keep the people who drove her away so long ago.

Best part? Mom and Dad are getting married and Auzi got to be in the engagement photos!

Ausia has been adopted. Thank You Matt and Kate for taking Ausia into your family.

It's been a pretty big change for Ausia in the last 6 weeks. She went from a stray with 3 pups and a injured leg to a healed leg, living in a warm house with good food, spay surgery and healing, and now to her very own family. Have a great new life Ausia.

Hi Folks, Ausia here again,

Since my last update I have been doing well. I got to go for a ride to Minneapolis Animal Care and Control for the MNsnap clinic. The Mnsnap people were very nice. I got spayed there. No more puppies ever for me! I was a bit groggy when FD came to take me home. I had to wear that darn cone again for a week. I hate the cone and am sure to remind FD, the other dogs and cats that I hate it. I ram them with it. FD would take it off when we went for walks. We only went a short distance for a few days so I could heal up. I'm all healed now. My leg is also as good as new. Thank you to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and RAGOM for taking such good care of me.

FD has been working with me on commands. He makes me sit and stay when he feeds me. It drives me crazy but I do it because I get praise. FD is making me sit for other things all the time. He says I do pretty good but need more work on it. I like learning new things. I get a treat if I go in the crate.

I got my foster sister Polly to play with me! She was very shy at first, but wags her tail and wants to play when I go to her "safe" corner of the living room. We got a little carried away one time and FD had to break it up. No problems since then. I play with house kitty Tiger also. House kitty Itsey doesn't like me and won't play at all.

A few days ago FD came home with a big box of bones. Me and Ziggy got a couple of the new ones and spent a couple days working them over. FD says it is good that I chew on the bones. It's not so good when I chew a newspaper up. FD wasn't too happy with me when I did that. The same goes for when I eat the kitties food.

I had some visitors on Saturday. I really turned on the charm. They emailed back on Monday after thinking it over. They are coming back this coming Saturday to adopt me! I will miss FD, the other dogs and cats. I'll be an "only" dog but will have other dogs in my new family's family. It sounds like I may become a running partner.

I want to be sure to thank all the people that have helped me to my new life. I know there are many that helped that I've never met. Your love for me is overwhelming. Thank You Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, transporters, Animal Care Clinic in Bemidji MN, RAGOM, Annandale Vet Clinic, MNsnap and FD. A special Thank You to all those who support the organizations that make this all possible.

Hi Folks, Ausia here,

FD [foster dad] thought since I've been here a few weeks I should do my own updates now. FD told part of my story but I have a few more details to add.

I came in to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue with 3 puppies. The puppies went to The Wright County Humane Society where they were adopted out quickly because they are as cute as me. One of them lives only 6 miles away from my current home and came to visit me. Henry had grown a lot! I was happy to see him and his new family.

My leg is fully healed. I couldn't wait to get that cone off my head. We now are walking about 3 miles a day and I could walk much further. FD was very glad I didn't need surgery on it again.

Speaking of surgery, I am scheduled to have spay surgery on 11/22/13 at MNsnap. FD says they do a great job but I will have to wear that darn cone again for a few days. The good parts are that I won't have puppies again and I will be fully ready to be adopted.

Last Saturday FD loaded me in the car and took me to what he called a "Meet & Greet" at Coon Rapids Petco. I got to meet lots of other foster dogs and their foster parents. Best of all, I got to meet lots of potential adopters. I poured on the charm.

FD says I should add to my highlights. So here are a couple:

  • I love meeting people and other dogs
  • I don't counter surf any more
  • I haven't gone in the wastebasket since the 1st week
  • I've gotten much better about walking on a leash
  • My recall still needs work, but FD figured out I come better to a whistle
  • I'm very affectionate. I love pets, rubs , hugs and cuddling

Could I be the dog for you?  Contact your placement adviser and let's find out. Thanks for checking in on me and for supporting RAGOM.  Ausia 13-339
