Please welcome Beau to RAGOM! Beau is a purebred male Golden Retriever who is almost 2 years old (born 12/31/14). He is a beautiful boy who is about as sweet as they come! Beau was surrendered by an owner who loved him very much but he was too large for her to handle.

Here is what we know about Beau:

  • Beau is neutered, heartworm negative, and up to date on all his vaccinations and does not have any health issues. He is a tall boy and weighed in at 87 lbs. which is a pretty good weight - he isn't really overweight but just a little "thick" and the vet and I would like to see his ideal weight a little closer to the low 80s. Keeping a dog at their ideal weight is important to keep them in optimal health. I think it shouldn't be too hard to drop a few pounds simply by making sure he doesn't overeat.
  • He gets along with all dogs, male and female, big and small. He previously lived with a small dog and is currently living with two goldens and a small dog in his foster home. Beau is slightly submissive to other dogs and does not generally challenge them. He isn't crazy about sharing his toys with them though so it's best if any other dogs in the home aren't toy stealers. He does NOT guard from humans at all though. Beau loves to play with the dogs in his foster home and would love a playmate in his adoptive home but I think he would be okay as an only dog as long as he had the opportunity to play with other dogs on a regular basis. I do not know if he is cat friendly since we do not have any cats at our home but we can try to test him with cats if a potential adopter needs to know.
  • Beau is good with children. He is currently living with an 8 month old baby in the foster home and he does great with him and is totally at ease around him. He gets excited when he sees other small children on our walks and behaves appropriately. Of course, even though he is kid-friendly, adults should ALWAYS supervise a dog's interactions with children at all times and should never let children tease, pull, climb on, or bother the dog to avoid any negative outcomes.
  • Beau knows basic commands and is mostly well behaved but would benefit from an obedience class to polish his skills and bond with his new owner. I am unsure on his level of recall - in our fenced backyard, sometimes he comes running when I call him and other times he looks at me like "yeah I'm good here thanks". We have not had him off leash outside of our fenced yard so I'm not sure, but if I had to guess I would say he is not inclined to bolt for the sake of running but is not necessarily inclined to come right to you if there is something interesting distracting him. For this reason, his owner should expect to spend significant time on recall training before allowing him off leash outside a fenced area. I would love to see him adopted to a home with a fenced yard since he is young and needs space to run off some energy, but he could probably be okay without a fence if his adopter gave him lots of opportunities to run off leash safely in a fenced area and play with other dogs.
  • Beau does pull on the leash a bit when walking but you can maintain pretty good control with an Easy Walk harness. He gets excited to go for a walk and spends the first half a block doing occasional "happy circles" around you (it's really cute actually!) but then settles in and walks pretty well. He is strong though so the harness or a head halter is recommended.
  • Beau has a little quirk that could potentially cause some trouble if not watched closely: He likes to pick up landscape rocks and run around the yard with them in his mouth. We are working on teaching him that he cannot do that but he should always be watched closely to make sure he doesn't ever ingest any, whether he does it intentionally or accidentally.
  • Beau is fully potty trained and has not had a single accident in his foster home. He will let you know when he needs to go outside by standing at the door and whining, although sometimes I suspect he also does that when he just wants to go outside to play and doesn't actually need to potty!
  • His surrendering owner reported that he does not like kennels and does fine with free roam of the house when home alone. We have not tested him with a kennel but have confined him to one room of the home (with our dogs) when we leave. I am sure he would do fine with full roam of the home. He does fine home alone for the 3-4 hours when we leave for errands and did fine the one day we had to leave him 8 hours. Beau does love to relax on the couch so I am hoping his adoptive family will allow him on the furniture. He sleeps with us in our bedroom, either on the floor or on a dog bed. He will come up to snuggle sometimes as we are going to bed or getting up in the morning but doesn't try to sleep on the bed with you. I don't think he would be happy being forced to sleep elsewhere in the house - he wants to be near you.
  • Beau does alert bark occasionally when he sees or hears people or noises outside the house. It is not excessive and he generally stops when you tell him to, but it is something that his adoptive family should be aware of.
  • Beau is a bit of a begger. He gets all up in your business when you're eating and he has no shame about it. We're working on that, but it's a bit of a hard habit to break (especially with my husband in the picture!), so don't expect that to be cured before adoption :) He doesn't counter surf though, although I've seen him think about it so I can't say he won't ever do that.
  • Beau's personality is sweet, playful, and happy-go-lucky. He has puppy energy and needs walks and playtime with other dogs but he is also happy to settle down and relax. He does not get scared or upset or bothered easily - he's just a happy guy! He really is a pretty good dog, pretty easy, and pretty close to perfect! Of course, keep in mind he's only been here two weeks and issues could arise, so we'll be looking for an adopter committed to keeping him happy, safe, and loved even if something does come up.

Beau is a joy to have around and we love him to pieces. In fact, we would totally keep him if we could (and believe me, I tried to find a way to convince myself we could!), but we are at max dog capacity at our house and really cannot have any more permanent dog members here! My loss is your gain though, so please fill out an application inquiry form if you are interested in adopting Beau!

Beau is doing well in foster care. He's such a happy boy and we love him to pieces. But it seems our time together is likely coming to a close soon, as I think Santa Paws will be granting his wish for a Furever Home very soon! Beau will be meeting a new family that sounds amazing - they are a perfect fit and I have a feeling it will be love at first sight! Stay tuned to learn more, but in the meantime, here are some recent photos of our handsome guy:

Beau recently visited Santa. Can you guess what he asked Santa to bring him for Christmas?!

Hello Beau admirers!

Beau is doing very well! We met with an applicant recently and while they were wonderful people, the "spark" just wasn't there. So Beau is now available again!

Some info about Beau:

I brought him with to the vet recently to weigh him and he has dropped a few pounds - he weighed 82 pounds now, which is a pretty good weight for him.

He rides very well in the car; he is excited to go for a ride and hops right in. He either sits or lays down and rides beautifully - no pacing or barking or whining.

Beau only mildly counter-surfs. Meaning, I have not seen him actually put his paws up on the counter to steal anything, but I have caught him sniffing his nose around and stealing a lick of my sandwich when he thought I had my back turned. If given free roam, you would want to be sure not to leave food on the counter or I suspect it would not be there when you returned!

I mentioned previously that Beau alert barks. For the average family, this is probably not a problem, as it is not excessive and he listens well and stops fairly quickly. However, he will probably not be a good fit for an apartment dweller or if you live in a noisy neighborhood since he'd likely hear lots of noises and bark more frequently. He also may not be a good fit if you have small kids that wake really easily at any noise - I could see it being a problem if naptime gets interrupted :)

Beau does still steal rocks and run around the yard with them playing keep away. We've been working on trading for treats and he is doing better but he does still steal them. His adopters will need to either have no landscape rock or be very committed to watching him closely at all times when outside (no putting him out to do his business while you get ready for work!) and constantly having treats on hand to trade out when he steals them.

In true Golden Retriever fashion, Beau likes to be near his people at all times. If he does not have access to you (when you are home), he will "protest poop" somewhere in the house to let you know he was not happy with that arrangement. He doesn't do this if you aren't home and only does it when you are home if you make him stay somewhere in the house that isn't with you. I found this out on Halloween when we shut the dogs away from the front door to prevent any escapes but I just thought it was an accident and maybe he really needed to go, but then he did it again a few weeks later when I had accidentally shut the bedroom door when trying to put the baby to bed. Other that that though, he has not had any accidents in the house (not that you can really call those accidents though!) so he is fully housetrained. For this reason, I believe his adoptive family will need to be okay with allowing him to sleep in their bedroom with them (he does not need to be on your bed with you if you don't want that though).

Here's what I think his perfect adopters would look like:

  • Another dog in the home that likes to play. Beau LOVES to play with other dogs. He craves their companionship.
  • A physically fenced back yard. He was surrendered because his mom had to move a smaller home without a fence and she wanted him to have a fenced yard to run in. I agree and would also really like to seem him have a fenced yard. I do not think an invisible fence would be good for him.
  • No landscape rocks! (Or an owner with a very watchful eye!)
  • A family that allows him to lounge on their couch. He LOVES to relax on the couch! In fact, he is right now as I type!
  • A family that allows him to sleep in the bedroom near them. He's content with a dog bed on the floor as long as he is near his people (and dog buddies).
  • A family that is at least somewhat active. He doesn't have excessive exercise needs but does need to burn some of his adolescent energy. A standard walk and yard playtime will do.
  • A family that will love him!

If you fit the above description and are interested in this beautiful sweet boy, please fill out an application inquiry form or talk to your placement advisor and maybe Beau can be in your home for the holidays!

Hi everyone, Beau here! So I wanted to check in and tell you a little more about myself:

I'm a very smart boy. I already knew some of the basic commands like sit and down, but Foster Mom (FM) has been working on some new ones with me. It took me all of about two minutes to learn to shake! Well duh, I will do just about anything for a treat! I'm a pretty good boy but I'm still a work in progress. I learn quickly though and I like to please.

I love love LOVE toys! One of my foster brothers has been a little bit of a jerk to me about sharing his toys so I've been feeling a bit deprived. He's starting to be nicer about it though so FM has been letting me play with some toys for a while and I just run around with it like it's the best thing since dog food. I'm really bummed out when she decides that the toys have to go nigh-night for a little while like when we go to bed but I have a good memory and the next morning when we get up, I go running downstairs and go right to the spot where the toy was sleeping and I whine and dance a little and wait for FM to catch up and ask her to let me play again. She laughs and thinks I'm a silly boy.

My other love is playing with the other dogs in my foster home. I am best friends with them and we wrestle and mouth-box and chase each other inside and outside until we are too tired to play anymore. I love them so much. I hope when I get adopted that there is another dog in my home that I can play with!

My third love (in no particular order) is to cuddle with my people. FM says I am such a sweet boy and it is so easy to fall in love with me! I don't think she's too bad either :) Sometimes I cuddle right next to them on the couch and sometimes I find a spot of my own but I'm never too far away. I like to keep them in sight at all times.

Oh, remember how FM said I like to pick up rocks and run around with them and how it could get me in trouble? Well today I swallowed one :( I was running around with a rock in my mouth and FM was calling me and trying to get me to trade it for a treat. Then suddenly I didn't have the rock in my mouth anymore. FM thought I must have just dropped it in the grass but boy did I surprise her later when we were hanging out and I started ralphing and out popped a rock! Yikes! FM muttered something about feeling relieved that it came out that way and didn't get stuck and require surgery... So my adoptive home will have to watch me really really closely and keep working with me to trade rocks for treats and hopefully someday I will grow out of that habit, but if not, they might need to think about trading out their rocks for mulch... Only time will tell.

So after FM posted my story to this interweb thing last week, there were a lot of people that told her that they wanted to adopt me! I felt so special! FM read about each one of them very carefully and picked the one that she thought was the best fit. She felt bad having to say no to so many of them because they all sounded like wonderful people! Truth be told, I'm such an easy-going guy that I probably could fit into almost any home, but one of the families had everything FM wanted in a Forever Home for me so she spoke with them and they are going to come meet me soon. I'm so excited - I hope they love me! Stay tuned and hopefully I'll have good news to report soon! FM says she is already feeling sad though at the thought of having to say goodbye to me! :(

Love,

Beau
