Hello Beau admirers!
Beau is doing very well! We met with an applicant recently and while they were wonderful people, the "spark" just wasn't there. So Beau is now available again!
Some info about Beau:
I brought him with to the vet recently to weigh him and he has dropped a few pounds - he weighed 82 pounds now, which is a pretty good weight for him.
He rides very well in the car; he is excited to go for a ride and hops right in. He either sits or lays down and rides beautifully - no pacing or barking or whining.
Beau only mildly counter-surfs. Meaning, I have not seen him actually put his paws up on the counter to steal anything, but I have caught him sniffing his nose around and stealing a lick of my sandwich when he thought I had my back turned. If given free roam, you would want to be sure not to leave food on the counter or I suspect it would not be there when you returned!
I mentioned previously that Beau alert barks. For the average family, this is probably not a problem, as it is not excessive and he listens well and stops fairly quickly. However, he will probably not be a good fit for an apartment dweller or if you live in a noisy neighborhood since he'd likely hear lots of noises and bark more frequently. He also may not be a good fit if you have small kids that wake really easily at any noise - I could see it being a problem if naptime gets interrupted :)
Beau does still steal rocks and run around the yard with them playing keep away. We've been working on trading for treats and he is doing better but he does still steal them. His adopters will need to either have no landscape rock or be very committed to watching him closely at all times when outside (no putting him out to do his business while you get ready for work!) and constantly having treats on hand to trade out when he steals them.
In true Golden Retriever fashion, Beau likes to be near his people at all times. If he does not have access to you (when you are home), he will "protest poop" somewhere in the house to let you know he was not happy with that arrangement. He doesn't do this if you aren't home and only does it when you are home if you make him stay somewhere in the house that isn't with you. I found this out on Halloween when we shut the dogs away from the front door to prevent any escapes but I just thought it was an accident and maybe he really needed to go, but then he did it again a few weeks later when I had accidentally shut the bedroom door when trying to put the baby to bed. Other that that though, he has not had any accidents in the house (not that you can really call those accidents though!) so he is fully housetrained. For this reason, I believe his adoptive family will need to be okay with allowing him to sleep in their bedroom with them (he does not need to be on your bed with you if you don't want that though).
Here's what I think his perfect adopters would look like:
- Another dog in the home that likes to play. Beau LOVES to play with other dogs. He craves their companionship.
- A physically fenced back yard. He was surrendered because his mom had to move a smaller home without a fence and she wanted him to have a fenced yard to run in. I agree and would also really like to seem him have a fenced yard. I do not think an invisible fence would be good for him.
- No landscape rocks! (Or an owner with a very watchful eye!)
- A family that allows him to lounge on their couch. He LOVES to relax on the couch! In fact, he is right now as I type!
- A family that allows him to sleep in the bedroom near them. He's content with a dog bed on the floor as long as he is near his people (and dog buddies).
- A family that is at least somewhat active. He doesn't have excessive exercise needs but does need to burn some of his adolescent energy. A standard walk and yard playtime will do.
- A family that will love him!
If you fit the above description and are interested in this beautiful sweet boy, please fill out an application inquiry form or talk to your placement advisor and maybe Beau can be in your home for the holidays!
