After a long eight-hour transport from Iowa to Northern Minnesota, Budda is now a member of the RAGOM family. The long trip was extremely traumatizing for this big guy. He is an 84-pound, very tall and handsome purebred Golden, with the AKC papers to prove it! He has dark golden fur with a reddish tinge. Budda lived with the same family since he was 8 weeks old. From what we understand, he was surrendered because Budda got into an altercation with their neighbor’s poodle. Budda felt the need to protect his family’s Golden Retriever puppy and during the ensuing fight, fatally injured the poodle. Because a complaint was filed, the city officials said he had to be re-homed. Thanks to the SO for lovingly surrendering Budda to RAGOM.

Here’s what we know about Budda aka Boo after one week: he’s house trained (only marked in the house once when he first arrived); goes to the door when he wants out; barks rarely, but loudly when he does; knows the commands sit and lie down; loves to go for walks but pulls hard on a flat collar. (FM asks him slow down, and he does); likes to be petted by FM and FD but is still a little skittish around FD; is not crate trained, but respects baby gates; has free roam when someone is home; does not sleep in a dog bed, prefers to sleep on area rugs or just on the floor; sleeps through the night on a mat in the bedroom; and, will jump up on the bed by invitation only.

He is a quiet gentle guy until it comes to chipmunks, squirrels, etc. Budda would love to chase them. He has moments of extreme anxiety when he encounters someone or something new and he shakes from nose to tail. But, these episodes of high anxiety are lessening. He requires slow introductions to strangers, but did not with our 11 year old grandson. It was mutual love at first sight. Budda has mastered the golden paw and will use the nose nudge to ask for more petting. He greeted FM once by gently resting his front paws on her shoulders. FM and Boo were literally seeing eye to eye.

He is now neutered and UTD on his shots. Boo tested negative for heartworm, lyme disease, and anaplasmosis. Yay! He’s on tick and heartworm prevention. Boo does have a slight heart murmur; his ligament in his left knee is a little weak and he does have a mild hip dysplasia (found when he was x-rayed as a pup). But, these conditions are mild enough that they are of no concern for now. FM is giving him Glucosamine and Omega 3 supplements daily.

Each day that goes by, Budda is settling in more and more. After he recovers from his neutering, we will introduce him to grandkids, granddogs, and any approved adopter who would like to meet him. Better hurry adopters, we’re falling in love with this sweet guy. More updates to follow…

Our fabulous dog, Beau went over the Rainbow Bridge on Sept 22. He came to us with confidence problems. He was very scared of people and would walk behind us.

He was also terrified of the lake.  Over time and many floating treats, he was going in the lake and would approach neighbors and strangers with confidence. He enjoyed “fishing” for sunfish, long walks three times a day, and cross country skiing with us.

Two years ago he developed a wound on his paw that would not heal. After two months of antibiotics, we had to have his toe amputated. He then developed lesions in his mouth that were dead and dying tissue. When the incisions from the amputation didn’t heal and with the mouth problems, we went down to the U of MN.

After biopsies, they diagnosed vasculitis. He started taking several meds that worked. When we stopped them, he had another flare, so he was kept on the meds.

He was back to himself and did everything he used to do. Then this August he collapsed. Our local vet discovered a tumor on his spleen.

We went back to the U. After discussions with the ER vet, we opted for surgery. He came thru with flying colors but unfortunately the biopsy was sarcoma. They gave him 2-6 months.

He continued to chase squirrels and go for walks in the woods up until the last.  He was such a good boy and we miss him terribly.

Beau was our second RAGOM dog.  We want to thank RAGOM and all its volunteers for the wonderful work they do.

It has been 9 months since we adopted Budda. First thing we did was change his name to Beau. He was a very cautious canine and really needed lots of love and encouragement. We tried obedience class but I think it was too early in the adoption and he was too worried about all the other dogs and not really confident with us. He loves, loves, loves his dad. We live on a lake and we adopted him in September. The water was cold, but we did try to get him in. He has great brakes. No way was he even putting a toe nail in the water. (What retriever doesn't like water?) You could see he was very overwhelmed. We had a long wait for spring and another try. Our previous rescue did dock dogs so this was really new to us. Over the winter he grew more and more confident meeting people and other dogs. He really opened up. He goes to day care, does great with all the dogs and loves walks. Squeaky toys are his preference over balls and retrieving.

This spring we tried the water again. After much encouragement we got 4 paws in the lake and then his belly. Yahoo!!! The next try was with small treats that floated. That really got his attention. He would stretch out to reach them and then just walked out! We were so proud. The 3rd time he walked in with me without treats and paddled a little. Then he saw the sunfish! He would walk the shore trying to find them. Now he goes in a although reluctantly he does fetch the ball. We will continue in the water and hopefully by the end of the summer he will actually jump off the dock. (He lays down at the end of the dock with his toes in the water and whines.) He is so cute.

He has fit in so well with us and our lifestyle. All three of us are happy.

It's official. Budda aka Boo has been adopted by the T family. This special loving couple is a former RAGOM adopter who understands Boo’s need for slow introductions to new people and new situations. Boo, re-named Beau, will be able to run on five acres, go for two to three walks every day and swim in a lake that's in his backyard. This gentle giant has found his forever home.

Boo’s recovery from his neutering has been extended due to an infection. He’s responding to the antibiotics and is on the mend. He has been an understanding patient, even when wearing the “cone of shame”. He takes his antibiotics and daily supplements with Pill Pockets or wrapped in cheese, otherwise he won’t swallow them.

After spending more time with this big galoot, we know for sure he is one fantastic GR! He cuddles, hugs, loves belly rubs, plays tug of war (no, not during his recovery), has had no accidents in the house, loves his walks, and is a good eater (when a little bit of EVO canned food is added to his Fromm kibble). Most of the time he carries a squeaky stuffed toy in his mouth, but he never de-stuffs them. He “talks” to us in moans and groans. Boo does not counter surf. But, he tears up newspapers and papers when he is left at home alone for a few hours. He’s still baby gated when home alone. Otherwise, he has free roam.

Budda has a unique tail wagging, butt wiggling technique when he is happy. He wags and wiggles so hard he almost falls over. What a big sweetie!

Boo has a high prey drive when it comes to chipmunks, squirrels and toads. Yes, toads! On walks, FM has trouble holding him back when he is on the hunt. A Gentle Leader works wonders.

This weekend, if Boo is up to it (and I’m sure he will be), he will be introduced to family members and grand dogs. We’ll let you know how that goes.

A note from Boo: “A special couple came to meet me. I like them very much and I think they like me. In a few days, after my follow-up vet appointment, maybe just maybe, I’ll see them again. My paws are crossed.”

When Budda made his long journey north, he exhibited aggressiveness toward the transporters. At a transfer point in the journey, he refused to get out of the car, cowering in the far corner of the backseat, growling and showing his teeth. We met transport in Hinckley for the last two hour leg of his journey. The poor guy was growling, shaking, cowering and drooling excessively. After sitting with him in a grassy area for half an hour, FD loaded him into our SUV for the ride home. FM and FD took turns riding in the backseat with him. The only place we could touch him, without him growling at us, was on the top of his head and his nose. Fast forward to today, Budda’s growling has decreased to almost nothing. He’ll growl, occasionally, when we touch his back legs and paws. He now allows us to take high value items away from him without him making a sound. We can pet him all over and give him belly rubs. But, he is still a work in progress. FM is hopeful that his neutering will help to curb some of his male posturing.

If you’re familiar with the movie, “50 First Dates”, you will understand what FD goes through every day with Budda. In the evenings, FD and Budda are best buddies. The next morning, Budda seems to forget that he’s met FD before. He regards FD as a stranger and FD has to win him over again. Every time FD leaves the house and returns, Boo runs from him in fright, barking excessively. FD patiently and soothingly talks to Boo, lets him smell his hand, sits down on the floor and lets Boo come to him. The turnaround time has decreased from 30 minutes to about one minute. For the first time in past nine days, Boo greeted FD this morning with his tail wagging and his butt wiggling. Good boy!

FM believes that the family who adopts Boo may experience these same behaviors and will have to have the patience and understanding to win him over slowly. Trust me when I say, it will be worth it. He is an awesome GR.

FM and Boo are still housebound due to his surgery. In three more days, we will be able to go on long walks again and play in the fenced backyard. This coming weekend we will learn more about Budda when we introduce him to other people and dogs. Stay tuned….
