Bodie 08-241

Profile

Introducing Bodie, an adorable 1 year old male, about 60 pounds. He rode great in the car and is very sweet, maybe a little shy. He is very good on a leash and really enjoys walks and has had no accidents in the house.

Right now, he is working hard to learn his name and some basic commands, getting ready for a GReat life ahead! More later as we get to know him better.

I am so proud of my Bodie-boy! Today he trotted up, started licking my leg and then climbed into my lap like a true golden. This youngster is a prize - he is just slow to come out of his shell! As new fosters, it took US a while to relax, and BODIE a while to relax, and now every week I see him continue to grow into a wonderful boy! Today, sitting in my lap, he looked so happy and content. It's one of the first times I have really NOTICED that look! And Bodie can sit in my lap all he wants - because he went for a grooming appointment this week - and is now the softest teddy-bear ball of fur that I have ever seen!

Bodie/Bubba and resident Golden Jake have started to play a little more now that Jake has decided that being jealous just isn't worth the trouble... Bodie is very good with other dogs and plays well. I worked in the yard for a short while with Bodie on a tie out. His only interest is in staying as close to me as possible. If I get out of range, he pulls and barks for me to come back. In a fenced yard, he would be fine. In an acreage setting like we have, it's just more work to bond and boundary train. And - Bodie is becoming very good on the Gentle Leader! He is great jogging - I just can't jog very far! Enjoy his new pictures.

Bodie/Bubba has recovered from his neuter and is now looking for his forever home! He is a very quiet, well behaved little 1 year old, about 24 inches at the shoulder (small to me), 55-60 pounds and longer, silky fur. He knows sit, down (sometimes), but stay is a real challenge. He lets us wipe his feet, likes brushing, is very gentle. Now - he still has some puppy manners - meaning he has to be reminded not to check out countertops, not to put his paws on the couch and - most important - not to jump on the door, hit the latch and lock FM out of the house! Rookie mistake on my part - in fact, resident Golden Jake did the same thing to me at that age. So - ALL PAWS ON THE FLOOR, PLEASE!!

He is easily corrected and doesn't get into much, except for "retrieving" three bottles of shampoo from the shower. At first he was shy about asking for attention - he would come up for pets but wasn't sure if he should. I can see him grow more affectionate each day as he gets regular praise and snuggles. He needs a family that will form a strong bond with him and teach him to feel that he belongs. He LOVES his big Nylabone and soft squeaky toys - no destuffing yet!

Regarding his history of running - Rookie mistake #2 on our part - after Bodie had been at our house a few days, we dropped the leash while we were all hanging out in the back yard. As soon as he realized it, he was off in a flash! Fortunately, there was a fence at the edge of the development that slowed him down along with interest in the neighbor dog. RAGOM recommends that we wear a fanny pack of treats and when he turned to look at me, I dropped to the ground and pulled out treats. He knew what that meant and came barrelling to me. Since then, we have put him on a tie out when we work in the yard and he tries to follow us around. If we put him on the tie out while we are in the house, he sits on the back porch as if to say - Hey! Why am I out here? We also tried him in another foster's fenced back yard and he was fine while we all sat on the deck. I take all of these to be good signs. His forever family will need to work with him on bonding and recall. Lots of walks and and exercise would be a good idea although he is not a high energy dog - he is very quiet and calm.

After 3 days with the Bodie-meister, we decided to try some different names. There were a couple different names in the paperwork, sometimes things get confused...and sure enough, we got an immediate reaction every time with Bubba. Little Bodie's name is Bubba! He seems much happier now that we have that figured out!

Bodie/Bubba came to RAGOM from a shelter in Sioux Falls, SD. He had been surrendered by his family after running away several times. He seems to have been well cared for. He lived with children (ages unknown) and seems to miss them -- when we walk by children in the park, he perks up and watches them. The other day some children came up to pet him and he was thrilled! I think he would like a home with children.

We have been using a harness due to his history of running but haven't seen any efforts to escape although he does like to run - what 1-year old golden doesn't like to run? We walk in a grass field/shelter belt so there has to be plenty of temptation! He waits patiently while I figure out how to get his snazzy green harness on and off ( I never get it on the first try) and then waits while I wipe off his feet after our walks.

Bubba is the sweetest little guy - very gentle, even when he tries to jump up on me he actually does it gently! He has no resource guarding with food or toys, get along with dogs. We don't have a cat to test him with, but he just seems friendly to everyone. Like most pups his age, he needs some gentle direction and lots of attention along with daily exercise!

And -- news from Bubba -

HI !! Bubba here! Yes, Bubba - that's me! Silly Foster M&D didn't know my name and it took me a while to teach them! and SIT! I've learned to sit! Sometimes I just run up to FM and sit - just to show her! Now I am learning "down" but I need more practice on that! I'm a very good boy and want to be just like my big foster brother Jake. He is helping me learn all the things a pup should know - Nylabones, soft dog beds, all the best places in the yard to do my business. I have never had an accident, not once! Jake stays in the dog room with me during the day so I don't get lonely and get into trouble. Oh - gotta go - Jake says it's time to play tennis ball!

Love, Bubba
