Hi it's Boomer doing my own update today! Foster Mom (FM) has been spending time with some of the puppies you've been seeing on the RAGOM website. FM said the puppies are as cute and sweet as can be and she enjoys spending time with them. But when FM gets home she whispers in my ear that she'd much rather have a gentleman like me in her home. Here's a list of some of the things FM said she appreciates about me:
~I don't use my teeth to say hello.~I know that leashes are for loose leash walking and not for tug-of-war.~I don't dive into my food bowl when it gets close to the floor.~I know where to take care of business and can hold it for a long time.~I don't chew stuff that's not mine.~I come when I hear my name.~I sleep through the night on my dog bed.~I get into absolutely no trouble when the peeps go to work.~I am a very good listener and love to rest my head on your knee and gaze into your eyes as you tell me about your day. As much as I like living with my foster family, I know there's a forever family out there that that wants me for their very own. If you think that might be you, please let your placement advisor know. Boomer

Boomer is back! Boomer was adopted to a home with a cat. Boomer and the cat got along OK except for a couple of instances when the cat startled Boomer while Boomer was in a deep sleep. Boomer’s frightened response was to lunge at the cat. No damage done, but in order to keep peace Boomer was returned to us.
I checked in with Boomer’s original owners and they also had a couple of occurrences where Boomer startled when surprised while he was in a deep sleep. Again, no damage done. Boomer just jumped and gave a small growl. We found this quite interesting because we did not see Boomer’s startle response while he was with us. But we are an adult household with resident Josie who sleeps by choice in her crate. Boomer’s sleep was uninterrupted at our house and all was good!
So what does this mean for Boomer? Boomer will need to go to a home where there are no small children who may not understand Boomer needs his space while he sleeps. Any other pets in the home must also respect Boomer’s space while he sleeps. Humans in the household must remember to give Boomer a quiet verbal “hey Boomer” before they approach him while he is sleeping so as not to startle him. This actually is good practice for all of our pets, but in Boomer’s case it will be extremely important.
Knowing that Boomer is cautious around new dogs, we took re-introductions to resident Josie slow. The dogs are either supervised or physically separated by a baby gate. We’ve had no trouble, the two dogs seem to remember each other and are doing fine. Boomer did give Josie one warning growl when she barreled into him as I was petting him. Good communication skills on Boomer’s part, and a good reminder to Josie that not all dogs appreciate her enthusiasm.
Boomer’s routine at our house is pretty simple. Work week we rise and shine at 4:45am for a one mile walk. The early rise and shine is foster mom’s choice, I think Boomer would like to sleep much later if given the chance! Morning walk is followed by breakfast in the laundry room. Boomer is very patient while waiting for his food dish and does not mind sharing the laundry room with Josie for meals. The dogs lounge around while we get ready for work and then are taken out for a final potty break before we leave. Boomer is gated in the mud/laundry room while we are gone. Boomer doesn’t seem to mind this arrangement one bit. He doesn’t even get off his dog bed to say good-bye when we leave. After work, foster dad takes the dogs for a brisk 3-4 mile walk and then it’s dinner time. Evenings are usually spent catching up on projects around the house/yard. While outside Boomer enjoys taking in all of the sights and smells of our rural yard while on a long lead. His recall is very good but for safety reasons RAGOM requires all foster dogs to be leashed or in a fenced yard. When inside Boomer is content to follow us from room to room, laying his head on our laps for ear skritches if we happen to sit down.
Boomer LOVES his walks. He is so funny. He’ll prance along and all of a sudden all four feet come off the ground and he kicks up his heels like he is saying “WOW it feels good to stretch my legs!”. The first time he did this it really surprised me and I thought he was either going to bolt, or jump on me. But nope, he doesn’t even put any pressure on the leash when he does this! It is the cutest thing ever and puts a smile on my face every time.

Fabulous news – Boomer passed his wellness exam with flying colors! His heart and lungs sound great, his joints show no signs of arthritis, he has normal wear on his teeth but no tartar build up, and we checked him from nose to tail for lumps and bumps and the only thing we found was a small skin tag on the top of his head. I had noticed a slight bit of watering from his left eye. The vet stained his eye and found a small abrasion on his cornea so we’ll treat that with antibiotic ointment twice a day for seven days. He lets me put ointment in without a problem. Yeah Boomer!
Boomer continues to be a dream to walk with a flat collar unless it’s time to leave the vets office! He was such a good boy at the vet but when they opened the exam room door to let us out Boomer couldn’t get out of there fast enough. It gave us all a good laugh because he had been so quiet during his exam. Note to self – next time we go to the vet finish the conversation BEFORE opening the door!
Boomer has very easily adjusted to our routine. He has absolutely no issues being gated in the mud/laundry room for a work day. We had a big storm blow through Thursday while we were at work and there was nothing out of place when we got home. So I think we can safely say he doesn’t have any storm anxiety. He has been enjoying walks, playing in the lake, playing Chuckit! but he is slow about giving the ball back, and would prefer to sleep on our bed which isn’t an option at our house. Once he decides we’re serious about no dogs on the bed he sleeps quietly on the floor in our bedroom. He is 100% housebroken.
We’re still not sure whether or not Boomer should be an only dog. Boomer and Josie have been coexisting without any major problems. When they are out on walks or out in the yard they are fine together. However Boomer is not excited about sharing his people when we’re in the house and will give Josie a warning growl if he feels Josie is getting too close to us. Fortunately Josie listens to his warning and backs off. At this point we feel Boomer could go to a home with another dog as long as it’s not an in-your-face or extremely dominant dog.
Boomer is definitely ready to find his forever home, might that be with you?
Chillin' with my Chuckit! ball
I LOVE the water!
Puleeze can I sleep on the bed? I only weigh 82# and don't take up much room
